Much like the Edward Snowden short film , it was only a matter of time before someone took the story of Wikileaks and Julian Assange and turned it into a film. Enter The Fifth Estate trailer: The Fifth Estate Official Trailer Benedict Cumberbatch plays the Australian Julian Assange while Daniel Bruhl takes on the role of Assange’s first partner and friend, Daniel Domscheit-Berg. While the trailer seems to fall victim to somewhat unclear timeline issues, something that plagued the recent Wikileaks documentary, We Tell Secrets , with Bill Condon behind the camera, the concerns should be few. The man behind such great films like Kinsey and even the Breaking Dawn movies, there’s little doubt The Fifth Estate will be on par with other movies released this fall. Perhaps the most interesting thing to watch going forward however, will be the circus that still surrounds Assange and the Wikileaks organization. Holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy after having rape charges brought against him, Assange has spoken out saying The Fifth Element is a propaganda attack against both Wikileaks and himself. The Fifth Estate opens on October 11th.
Who knows. Before you even ask, that’s our answer. Why exactly Lady Gaga swung by the Ecuadorian embassy in London for some QT with embattled WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, only she can say. All we can say is this is the most random pic ever: Apparently, Mother Monster was in London for a “personal appearance and tea party” to promote her new perfume Fame. Singer/rapper MIA caught wind of this. MIA tweeted at Gaga on Sunday night, “if ur at harrods today, come visit Assange at the Ecuador embassy across the st. im there. ill bring TEA and CAKE.” Fast forward 24 hours and the Lady had posted the above photo. Who knows what the two of them talked about, or if MIA was actually there. Perhaps they discussed her (indirect) role in bringing WikiLeaks to prominence? You may recall that famous whistleblower Bradley Manning referenced her in describing how he copied thousands of classified documents from U.S. Army servers. “I would come in with music on a CD-RW labelled with something like ‘Lady Gaga’ … erase the music … then write a compressed split file,” Manning recalled. “No one suspected a thing … [I] listened and lip-synched to Lady Gaga’s Telephone while exfiltrating possibly the largest data spillage in American history.” Hmm. Perhaps this sheds new light on why Lady Gaga vomited on stage in Spain. She’s an enemy of the state and the powers that be are poisoning her! Since June, the 41-year-old Assange has been inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has since been granted diplomatic asylum. The British government intends to extradite Assange to Sweden under an arrest warrant for sexual assault once he leaves the embassy. Assange says he fears that may result in his subsequent extradition to the United States of America to face charges over the leak of the military documents.

And while the Warner Bros film opens in theaters this Friday, fans may have the opportunity to see it live in the flesh as it were in the future. Starring Channing Tatum, the story loosely revolves around the actor’s eight month stint dancing at male strip clubs in Tampa, Florida. It is a time during which Tatum admits to witnessing a much more dark and depressing version of events than what producing partner/writer Reid Carolin transposes to the script. He meets an eager college drop out, played by Alex Pettyfer and takes him under his wing. Carolin tipped off to USA Today that there are plans to strut Magic Mike on Broadway in the near future. “”We are working on it as a Broadway show, which would be a different story,” said Carolin, adding, “More of a romp, more of a fun night out at a club with a story. I’m almost more excited about that than the movie because I think it’s the perfect thing for women to go see on Broadway, to be participants in the show.” And Pettyfer may have a chance to show more skin as well if and when the show hits the great white way. He said he “absolutely” would do the show. “”I think we should all do the opening night,” he said.

Mainstream support for Wikileaks is often far removed from the daily news cycle. Many journalists seem to feel uncomfortable backing Wikileaks (and Julian Assange) because of his ongoing legal issues, forgetting the key miracle behind the site; the profound challenges to the established information order and exposing the sycophancy between journalists and corporate power.
