Lady Gaga and Julian Assange: Random BFF Alert!

Who knows. Before you even ask, that’s our answer. Why exactly Lady Gaga swung by the Ecuadorian embassy in London for some QT with embattled WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, only she can say. All we can say is this is the most random pic ever: Apparently, Mother Monster was in London for a “personal appearance and tea party” to promote her new perfume Fame. Singer/rapper MIA caught wind of this. MIA tweeted at Gaga on Sunday night, “if ur at harrods today, come visit Assange at the Ecuador embassy across the st. im there. ill bring TEA and CAKE.” Fast forward 24 hours and the Lady had posted the above photo. Who knows what the two of them talked about, or if MIA was actually there. Perhaps they discussed her (indirect) role in bringing WikiLeaks to prominence? You may recall that famous whistleblower Bradley Manning referenced her in describing how he copied thousands of classified documents from U.S. Army servers. “I would come in with music on a CD-RW labelled with something like ‘Lady Gaga’ … erase the music … then write a compressed split file,” Manning recalled. “No one suspected a thing … [I] listened and lip-synched to Lady Gaga’s Telephone while exfiltrating possibly the largest data spillage in American history.” Hmm. Perhaps this sheds new light on why Lady Gaga vomited on stage in Spain. She’s an enemy of the state and the powers that be are poisoning her! Since June, the 41-year-old Assange has been inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has since been granted diplomatic asylum. The British government intends to extradite Assange to Sweden under an arrest warrant for sexual assault once he leaves the embassy. Assange says he fears that may result in his subsequent extradition to the United States of America to face charges over the leak of the military documents.

The Julian Assange Movie is One Step Closer to Existing

Movieline has already given Hollywood a list of directors who might find themselves at home behind the camera of the WikiLeaks movie — fingers crossed for Roman Polanski, obvs — and now it appears the project is one step closer to having a script. Julian Assange has scored himself a book deal! “I don’t want to write this book, but I have to,” Assange told Britain’s Sunday Times , presumably after cashing his $1.5 million advance check. Bill Hader , get your headshot ready. Muwhahahaha . [ THR via The Wrap ]

Lefties Attack Time Editor for ‘Gutless’ Move to Pick Facebook Founder Over Assange

Michael Calderone at The Cutline blog at Yahoo! devoted a post to controversy on the Left over why radical WikiLeaks mastermind Julian Assange wasn't Time's Person of the Year. (Lefties have insisted conservatives could win since they're an evil force like Hitler , but Assange somehow isn't put in the Bad Guy camp, or even the Egomaniac camp. ) But Calderone picked a long-time Newsweek contributor to diss Time, without really noting the professional tie: In picking a less-controversial figure, Stengel ended up creating a controversy. Slate Group editor-in-chief Jacob Weisberg, for one, said [in a Tweet] it was “gutless of Time not to name Assange.” Stengel, who had an exclusive Skype interview with Assange a few weeks ago, said he considered the WikiLeaks chief and, indeed, did select him as a runner-up for 2010. Assange, he acknowledges, has “had a big year.” But in Stengel's view, Assange's actions in 2010 will not have the long-term impact of Zuckerberg's. “I think Assange will be a footnote five years from now,” Stengel said. read more

Julian Assange released, vows Wikileaks to fight on

JULIAN Assange strode to freedom on the steps of the High Court in London and vowed his Wikileaks website would fight on. The 39-year-old Australian was released after nine days in the Victorian-era Wandsworth prison when the High Court said he should be granted bail while he resists extradition to Sweden on sex abuse allegations that he claims are a crude attempt to silence him. After a day of uncertainty about his fate, Mr Assange and his legal team walked outside the court yesterday into a light snow storm on The Strand to address about 200 journalists from around the world. “It's great to smell the fresh air of London again,” he said. “First, some thankyous. To all the people around the world who have had faith in me, who have supported my team while I have been away. “To my lawyers, who have put up a brave and ultimately successful fight, to our sureties (bail guarantors) and people who have provided money in the face of great difficulty and aversion. “And to members of the press who are not all taken in, and considered to look deeper in their work. “And I guess finally, to the British justice system itself, where if justice is not always the outcome at least it is not dead yet. “During my time in solitary confinement in the bottom of a Victorian prison I had time to reflect on the conditions of those people around the world also in solitary confinement, also on remand, in conditions that are more difficult than those faced by me. “Those people also need your attention and support. “And with that I hope to continue my work and continue to protest my innocence in this matter and to reveal, as we get it, which we have not yet, the evidence from these allegations.” Justice Duncan Ouseley rejected an appeal against Mr Assange's bail by Swedish authorities, who claimed if he was set free he might flee rather than face charges in Sweden that he allegedly committed four sex offences against two women in what began as consensual sexual encounters. Justice Ouseley said one reason he believed Mr Assange was unlikely to abscond was that the allegations against him in Sweden did not seem to be “a cast iron case… so he has some prospects of success”. Evidence that one Swedish prosecutor felt there was no case against Mr Assange before another prosecutor disagreed and decided to pursue the matter suggested that the case “would be one that could be resisted by an innocent man,” said Justice Ouseley. Mr Assange denies the allegations of sexual abuse and insists the Swedish prosecution is a politically motivated attempt to stop his website from revealing US government secrets. The internet publisher's release was delayed by a scramble to meet the court's demand for a

The People Magazine Woman of the Year is …

… Joslyn James ! Just kidding. How hilarious would that be, though. Tiger Woods’ mistresses deserve at least a dishonorable mention for all the amusement they’ve brought us. Ironically, the actual winner of People ‘s arbitrary Woman of the Year honor was no doubt bolstered by a cheating scandal – of which she was on the raw end. Time just named Mark Zuckerberg Person of the Year . Who do you think captured People ‘s less famous, female-only distinction? Follow the jump to see… It’s Sandra Bullock! A worthy recipient, although you have to wonder if she would even be considered had Jesse James not given it to Michelle “Bombshell” McGee. Then again, that’s not fair. It was her courageous, admirable behavior in the wake of that scandal that showed us her true grace under pressure. She’s a winner! Who do you think should be Woman of the Year? Sandra? Someone else? Leave a comment below and tell us who else you deem worthy of such a title …

Michael Moore Posts Bail For WikiLeaks Dude

Controversial liberal filmmaker Michael Moore and other celebrities are putting their names and bank accounts on the line for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Assange, who was arrested for sex crimes in the UK last week, remains in custody pending an appeal by authorities against a judge’s decision to grant him bail. He has vowed to fight extradition to Sweden, arguing that the charges against him are politically motivated and designed to deflect attention from WikiLeaks. Maybe Moore can also front Assange a new haircut? This stance has won him some high-profile backing, as was shown at a hearing Tuesday when some notable faces entered Westminster Magistrates Court. He also found prominent support from here in the U.S., as Michael Moore pledged $20,000 from “his own pocket” to ensure the embattled Assange’s freedom. The director of Bowling for Columbine and Farenheit 9/11 said he backs Assange and will do “anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving.” WikiLeaks, Moore maintains, “continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars.” “We were taken to war in Iraq on a lie. Hundreds of thousands are now dead. Just imagine if the men who planned this war crime had WikiLeaks to deal with.” “They might not have been able to pull it off.” Assange’s bail is set at
