Los Angeles’ premiere hotel rooftop, LUXE, hosted some of the greatest names in sports honoring Football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, at the 3rd annual Champions for Choice event for the AFC in conjunction with the 2014 ESPY Awards. The event was hosted by boxing champion Laila Ali, WNBA and six-time Olympian Lisa Leslie, NBA Veteran Jalen Rose and sports expert for ESPN Stephen A. Smith. Also in attendance at last night’s celebration were: Oscar Award winner Louis Gosset, Jr, Karrueche Tran, VH1 Hollywood Exes stars, Torrei Hart, Nicole Murphy and Shameka Lawerence; former CW Girlfriends star Jill Marie Jones (with her new man); Tiffney Cambridge from Marrying the Game; Basketball Wives stars, Sundy Carter and Laura Govan, and a host of other taste-makers and influencers.
Dot-Marie Jones has an extra special reason to feel gleeful this holiday season. The actress, who has recurred on Glee for years as Coach Beiste, married long-time partner Bridgett Casteen at their home in Los Angeles last night. According to People, the ceremony was attended by close friends of the couple, who believed they were simply attending a holiday party. But Jones and Casteen then shocked their loved ones by actually exchanging vows! Pretty cool, huh? Jones proposed to Casteen at Disneyland in October, leading to the following precious Tweet from the actress’ betrothed: “Thank you @dotmariejones for making me the happiest woman in the world.” This will be the first marriage for both and you can watch Glee online to see plenty more of Jones as the lovable Coach Beiste.
At Comic-Con, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ cast preview costumes. By Terri Schwartz Kristen Stewart at 2011 Comic-Con Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images SAN DIEGO — Kristen Stewart may be the fairest of them all, but her Snow White that was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (July 23) certainly doesn’t look like a damsel in distress. The “Twilight Saga” actress took to the stage to promote “Snow White and the Huntsman” in Hall H alongside her co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron and Sam Claflin, producer Joe Roth and director Rupert Sanders. Unfortunately, there was no footage to show since the flick doesn’t start shooting until next week, but the cast did bring some first looks at the costume design and general feel of the movie. Stewart’s Snow White doesn’t have a yellow and blue dress, and there’s not a bow to be seen. Instead, she was decked out in a full suit of armor and sported a giant shield with a white tree emblazoned on it. Her Prince Charming, played by Claflin, was similarly dressed, though he teased that his prince was not as sweet as he might have been in previous incarnations. As the titular Huntsman, Hemsworth looked a bit ragged and dirty with his axe and commoner’s clothes. When asked what it took to get him in costume for that, he joked that it required “about four or five of hours of rolling around in the mud, four days of drinking” and for the clothes to be dug up “from the backyard in Australia.” The evil stepmother, played by Theron, was as imposing as anyone could have been hoped for. Theron looked like a more badass version of the evil queen from the classic Disney cartoon, with a braided blonde coif on her head and a dagger in hand. “This, as a fable, she sort of just starts off as a bad person, so it was important to understand [why she is the way she is],” Theron explained about her character. “A lot of her circumstances will kind of bleed into her actions … She’s a serial killer; I’m pretty much preparing to play a serial killer.” This will be one of Stewart’s first roles outside of “The Twilight Saga,” and Roth said part of the draw of casting her was to be the one who helped her expand as an actress. For Stewart, it was the chance to play a tougher role. “It’s not a little girl sitting by a well with little tweety birds telling her what to do and where to go,” she said of her character. “[The costume] makes you feel kind of strong occasionally, sometimes, but I kind of feel tiny, my pinhead sticks out of these enormous things.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘She definitely brought back a lot of soul to mainstream,’ Darren Criss says. By Kara Warner Amy Winehouse Photo: Vince Bucci/ Getty Images SAN DIEGO — The news of Amy Winehouse’s tragic death continued to shock the world Saturday (July 23), with many of the 27-year-old’s celebrity fans taking to Twitter and Facebook to express their sadness in learning of the troubled singer’s passing. “Glee” cast members Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, Harry Shum Jr. and Dot Marie Jones joined in the thousands of Winehouse mourners devastated by the loss. “She’s paved the way for so many artists, so at least every artist can pay homage to her in some way,” Ushkowitz told MTV News at Comic-Con 2011 . “Hopefully they will,” she said, adding, “It’s just so tragic: She was so young and so talented.” Criss said, “She definitely brought back a lot of soul to mainstream, and it’s really unfortunate to see her go, but I think she’ll live on in other artists who will follow [with] the same soul.” Shum Jr. added, “She had a voice that couldn’t be duplicated. It’s a tragedy.” Marie Jones said she hopes more attention is paid to Winehouse’s legacy as an artist than to her personal struggles. “I hope everybody focuses on what she did and did so well and not the tragedy,” she said. “God bless her and her family. She did so much.” “In a short period of time,” Shum Jr. added. “[At age] 27, it’s really sad,” Marie Jones concluded. Though some news outlets are reporting a drug overdose as the suspected cause of Winehouse’s death, autopsy reports aren’t scheduled to be released until Sunday.
