Boyz II Men: The ‘Battle Of The Boy Bands’ Forefathers

Boyz up against longtime rivals Jodeci in round one; voting open now! By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena Boyz II Men Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like ‘NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round. One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men , who told MTV News they were among the “progenitors” of the entire boy-band genre. “We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about,” Nathan Morris told us. Highest Chart Achievement In the mid-’90s, Boyz II Men ruled the charts. That’s not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it’s also the biggest single ever: “One Sweet Day” with Mariah Carey. Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt. Standout Video The Boyz made a series of great videos for their hits “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You” and “Water Runs Dry,” but for its cameos alone, “On Bended Knee” rises above. In the clip, each band member breaks up with and eventually reconciles with a girlfriend, played by four famous actresses: Victoria Rowell, Ren

Ricky Bell recalls to MTV News ‘going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs.’ By Rob Markman New Edition Photo: MTV News New Edition are fast approaching 30 years in the music biz, and the Boston boys have a ton of memories since dropping their debut album, Candy Girl, in 1983. For Johnny Gill, his favorite came in 1990 when NE reunited on the MTV Video Music Awards; for Ralph Tresvant, his best memory came after hearing the group’s song on the radio for the first time. Ricky Bell, nodded in agreement, but then recalled another special time — meeting the King of Pop. “I guess Ralph took my number one, but number two would probably be meeting Michael Jackson, being invited to his house. Going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs,” Bell told MTV News before the group performed at DJ Cassidy’s 30th birthday party in New York City on July 6. “Just to meet someone, that icon who inspired you, is a moment I’ll never forget.” New Edition — which includes Bobby Brown, Tresvant, Gill, Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Michael Bivins — are in the middle of a reunion run after performing in New Orleans at the 2011 Essence Music Festival . In addition to a number of shows they are performing together, NE also have a new album in the works, and if they have it their way, they will continue to add on to three decades’ worth of memorable moments. For Brown, though, it will always start at the beginning. “For me, 30 years would probably be just meeting them,” he said of his bandmates. “Meeting them and being able to have friends in my life and have brothers in my life that weren’t blood brothers, but they were my brothers and they took care of me.” Share your memories of New Edition’s nearly 30 years in the comments below! New Edition Album ‘In The Making,’ Bobby Brown Says

Pioneering pop&B boy band chop it up with MTV News about their reunion. By Rebecca Thomas New Edition perform at the Essence music festival Photo: Getty Images NEW ORLEANS — Don’t let the fancy footwork fool you: Bobby Brown says it took him two years to get back enough “muscle memory” to pull off the smoove moves that earned his group, New Edition , a permanent place in the annals of boy bands. OK, maybe not two years, but Brown — whose shirtless onstage dancing once got him arrested, during his ’90s heyday, in the state of Georgia — admitted it took some time when we caught up with him and his bandmates at last weekend’s 2011 Essence Music Festival . “It didn’t take two years, but it took a little while to get back into, you know, not moving the way I used to move and get the steps and start dancing back on my toes instead of flat-footed,” the onetime R&B bad boy laughed as he demonstrated a little shuffle. “Bobby got on shoes. Let me tell you, he ain’t had shoes onstage for the last 20 years,” group heartthrob Ralph Tresvant teased the sneaker-rocking Brown. “So that’s a testament to his dedication.” “It’s a lot of things that I’m capable of doing, but New Edition steps, whether you think so or not, they’re probably one of the hardest things in dance that you could do,” Brown added. In the ’80s, those steps, paired with soulful vocals, took five young boys from a Boston ‘hood to music-industry superstardom. Now celebrating 30 years in the business, New Edition — Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Tresvant, Brown and Johnny Gill (the only non-Bostonian brought into the fold in the ’90s to take over for Brown) — put their indelible street stamp on the boy-band hustle. And their influence rolls on — whether the bubblegum pop of their 1983 Candy Girl debut or the boys-to-men songs of their classic Heart Break album. Case in point, sought-after producer Jim Jonsin told MTV News this month that he would reference the New Edition sound for Justin Bieber ‘s next album. Backstage at the Superdome, the still-dapper guys, now in their early 40s, chatted with their arms flung around each other. In three decades, they’ve endured more than a few ups and downs — self-imposed hiatuses, label changes and infighting — and even spawned successful solo careers and subgroups like Bell Biv DeVoe. But gathered on this Fourth of July weekend in the Big Easy, they found they could recapture that magic, reducing grown women to squealing tweens. “Through the love of just being around each other for many years and trusting that we were just gonna be there for each other, we were able to let [individual projects] go for a minute and jump out that car and jump into this one,” Tresvant, in a stylish tan fedora, explained. So could an album be in the works? “We got a New Edition album in the making,” Brown revealed. “We’re thinking about it, we’re talking about it, and it all starts with us, just thinking about making some good music together. … I’m just glad to be a part of this and I’m proud to be a part of this.” Share your memories of New Edition in the comments! Jay-Z/Eminem LP Would Be ‘Up There With Thriller,’ Fans Say

‘It would be impossible to find that album,’ says one fan of a potential collabo after historic Yankee Stadium concert. By MTV News staff Eminem and Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium on Monday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Jay-Z and Eminem just finished their Home and Home showcase, with each MC headlining two nights at baseball stadiums in their respective hometowns, New York and Detroit. But now that they’ve wrapped, is there the potential for the two to join forces again soon? MTV News hit the pavement in the Bronx just outside of Yankee Stadium to pose the question to the people: Do you want to hear a joint Jay-Z and Eminem project? “Eminem and Jay-Z together,” Karyn responded. “What a phenomenal duo — who can top that?” Jay-Z has had his share of collabo albums in the past, including two with R. Kelly and a mash-up project with Linkin Park. Now, however, the Roc Nation boss is working on a joint LP with Kanye West . But most fans seemed to agree that a record with Jay-Z and Eminem would be historical. “If Jay and Em did a record together, it would be off the hook,” Dot said. “If God can bless this earth with Jay-Z and Eminem doing an album together, all hell would break loose,” Armaan told MTV News. “It would be impossible to find that album.” Music-industry insider Eddie Blackmon agreed the project would move quickly off shelves. “They’re two of the greatest lyrical artists of our generation,” he explained. “I think if they got together and collaborated on a project, it’d sell millions and millions of records.” New Edition’s Michael Bivins also attended the event and afterward, he told MTV News he was enthusiastic about the idea of the two superstars coming together. “The expectations might be really, really high,” Bivins said about a potential LP. “Up there with Thriller. ” Do you think Jay and Em should extend their joint-tour idea to the recording studio? Jay-Z And Eminem Bring Fans To ‘Tears’ At Final Stadium Show

‘Jay’s struggle and Eminem’s recovery, I think it comes off as incredible,’ fan/ New Edition luminary Michael Bivins says. By James Dinh, with reporting by Hilary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage All good things come to an end as Jay-Z and Eminem wrapped up the fourth and final concert of their Home and Home shows on Tuesday night. The MCs, who brought out a slew of special guests to make the event even more spectacular, had fans in awe as they left Yankee Stadium. MTV News caught up with a few of the show’s attendees who described the hip-hop extravaganza as nothing short of incredible. “It was wonderful to see two of the greatest MCs in the history [of hip-hop], Jay-Z and Eminem, come together and put this on at Yankee Stadium,” Eddie Blackmon said. Among the devoted fans was Michael Bivins, a founding member of the illustrious R&B/hip-hop groups New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. Bivins said that, in the end, the two rappers’ personal tribulations have helped them to succeed. “These brothers have been through something — Jay’s struggle and Eminem’s recovery — and it comes across as entertainment, and I think it comes off as incredible,” he said. The presence of two superstar MCs on one stage was thrilling, but the show’s guest appearances also earned rave reviews: Kanye West, Beyonc
