New Edition Album ‘In The Making,’ Bobby Brown Says

Pioneering pop&B boy band chop it up with MTV News about their reunion. By Rebecca Thomas New Edition perform at the Essence music festival Photo: Getty Images NEW ORLEANS — Don’t let the fancy footwork fool you: Bobby Brown says it took him two years to get back enough “muscle memory” to pull off the smoove moves that earned his group, New Edition , a permanent place in the annals of boy bands. OK, maybe not two years, but Brown — whose shirtless onstage dancing once got him arrested, during his ’90s heyday, in the state of Georgia — admitted it took some time when we caught up with him and his bandmates at last weekend’s 2011 Essence Music Festival . “It didn’t take two years, but it took a little while to get back into, you know, not moving the way I used to move and get the steps and start dancing back on my toes instead of flat-footed,” the onetime R&B bad boy laughed as he demonstrated a little shuffle. “Bobby got on shoes. Let me tell you, he ain’t had shoes onstage for the last 20 years,” group heartthrob Ralph Tresvant teased the sneaker-rocking Brown. “So that’s a testament to his dedication.” “It’s a lot of things that I’m capable of doing, but New Edition steps, whether you think so or not, they’re probably one of the hardest things in dance that you could do,” Brown added. In the ’80s, those steps, paired with soulful vocals, took five young boys from a Boston ‘hood to music-industry superstardom. Now celebrating 30 years in the business, New Edition — Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Tresvant, Brown and Johnny Gill (the only non-Bostonian brought into the fold in the ’90s to take over for Brown) — put their indelible street stamp on the boy-band hustle. And their influence rolls on — whether the bubblegum pop of their 1983 Candy Girl debut or the boys-to-men songs of their classic Heart Break album. Case in point, sought-after producer Jim Jonsin told MTV News this month that he would reference the New Edition sound for Justin Bieber ‘s next album. Backstage at the Superdome, the still-dapper guys, now in their early 40s, chatted with their arms flung around each other. In three decades, they’ve endured more than a few ups and downs — self-imposed hiatuses, label changes and infighting — and even spawned successful solo careers and subgroups like Bell Biv DeVoe. But gathered on this Fourth of July weekend in the Big Easy, they found they could recapture that magic, reducing grown women to squealing tweens. “Through the love of just being around each other for many years and trusting that we were just gonna be there for each other, we were able to let [individual projects] go for a minute and jump out that car and jump into this one,” Tresvant, in a stylish tan fedora, explained. So could an album be in the works? “We got a New Edition album in the making,” Brown revealed. “We’re thinking about it, we’re talking about it, and it all starts with us, just thinking about making some good music together. … I’m just glad to be a part of this and I’m proud to be a part of this.” Share your memories of New Edition in the comments! Kush Chronic-les: Guess Which Soul Legend Says She’s Only Been Clean Seven Years…

One of your parents’ favorite singers delivered a stellar performance at the 2011 Essence Music Festival on Saturday. She also dropped a bombshell about her drug use… something we might have guessed, but wouldn’t have expected her to be so honest about. Do you know who it was? Chaka Khan made her show at the Superdome on Saturday quite the experience for her fans. Taking to the main stage in the New Orleans Superdome after El Debarge, the 58-year-old not only treated fans to a high-energy performance but touched on her past drug addiction in the midst of her musical set, which included ‘I Feel For You,’ ‘Through the Wire,’ ‘I’m Every Woman’ and ‘Aint Nobody.’ Although Khan’s performance set may have been lighthearted, when it came to the matter of her road to recovery from drug addiction, she sang a different tune. “This next song is a song I wrote but I don’t remember writing it because I was high,” she admitted of the song [‘Angel’]. “That was then, this is now, I’m seven years clean.” Seven years though? Not to knock her accomplishment, but that’s mighty recent, isn’t it? What do you think she was on?? Source

A Look At New Orleans Five Years After Hurricane Katrina

Despite many locals having permanently relocated, the city continues to recover from one of the biggest disasters in U.S. history. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Steven Roberts Inside the Louisiana Superdome after Hurricane Katrina Photo: MTV News Five years ago, a New Orleans native by the name of Terrell became separated from his family — his mother, his sister, his brother and his nieces — in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when he volunteered to help neighbors to safety during the category 5 natural disaster. His story wasn’t unlike the ordeals experienced by many other residents in the Gulf Coast region at the time. Down and hard up on his luck, the young man was determined to reunite with his loved ones. “I haven’t slept since Monday, just transporting people through the flood to the Superdome,” he told MTV News’ Sway at the time, referring to the New Orleans Saints football stadium where survivors were temporarily housed. “It’s a boat that I found and I’m walking through the water pulling a boat of young people and elderly people just to get them out of harm’s way. Three o’clock this morning, I’m pulling the boat and I see a guy, he was holding his baby, floating in the water, they were dead. I had to take a whole ‘nother route. This is what I seen with my own eyes.” Despite the difficult challenges, two days later Terrell found his family in Houston at the Astrodome, where they had been evacuated to for safety concerns. It was only one story of hope fulfilled. But this enduring example represents what’s been going on in the city since: the resolve and persistence of those affected overcoming the odds through sheer will and pride and with a flare for the dramatic. From the Superbowl-winning New Orleans Saints to the residents of Louisiana coming together once again to fight through another setback, namely the BP oil spill, this corner of the country has proven to be the bedrock of our nation. A study released earlier this month by the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center and the Brookings Institution shows that the city’s residents are better off financially than they were five years ago, according to CNN . However, with as many as 1,800 people killed during the storm and a larger number of natives having permanently relocated to Houston, Atlanta, towns in Mississippi and other area cities, the findings may be skewed. Tourism, though, is still a key contributor to the city’s success and the pulse of the city’s economy. While nowhere near the levels it was pre-Katrina (10 million-plus visitors a year), the number of tourists arriving to the city known for his musical legacy, culinary treats and Mardi Gras festivities has grown steadily from 3.7 million the year after the storm to nearly 8 million last year, according to an ABC News report. And while corruption had been a larger part of the New Orleans government and executive leadership in the past, earlier this year, democratic mayoral candidate Mitch Landrieu was elected to lead the city, with a staggering 66 percent of the vote and carrying 365 out of 366 voting precincts. Landrieu’s speech during his swearing-in ceremony perhaps best captured the new spirit of New Orleans and may ultimately prove to be the message the city wishes to send to the world. “That first step is to declare that we are no longer recovering, we are no longer rebuilding. Now, we are creating,” Landrieu told his constituents in May. “Let’s stop thinking about rebuilding the city we were and start dreaming about the city we want to become. The world deserves a better New Orleans. So, people of New Orleans, hear this: Today is a new day. Today is a new time.”
