Exclusive: Page Six Magazine Threw Breezy Under The Bus To Sell Issues

Yesterday afternoon, the buzz machine behind the New York Post’s Page Six Magazine released an “exclusive” quote from their big Chris Brown feature in which he, of course was “talking about Rihanna once again.” Every entertainment blog and website picked up the quote , noting how, once again, Chris Brown was being exactly what the media has painted him out to be over the last two years: unapologetic and self-absorbed. The headlines were all pretty much the same, and everyone had something to say about it, including a domestic violence group which issued a statement so fast, it almost seemed like they had the press release ready and waiting for Chris to f*ck up once again. Here’s the problem with all that: CHRIS BROWN NEVER SAID HE WAS TIRED OF APOLOGIZING ABOUT THE RIHANNA INCIDENT. In fact, the quote released to the media was actually pulled from Chris’s answer to a question about what advice he would give his younger self. The bigger quote leading into that statement and the previous quote released about “being blackballed” spoke nothing about Rihanna and all about the meaning of fame in his life and both meanings of his album F.A.M.E. “Fame is what everybody seeks,” he says. “I get an adrenaline rush from it. But fame is basically love and hate all in one. Without bad, there is no good. Without good, there is no bad. But when [most] people see certain things happen to somebody, they usually turn away. They don’t want to get involved with it because they don’t want their name attached to anything negative. [Now] They wanna get on the record. They wanna let me back in the door. The last two years, everybody dissed me. But my fans were so dedicated. The way I look at it is, you can’t walk around mad, because then you just prove everybody right that you’re an angry person. So F.A.M.E. means “Forgiving All My Enemies” and “Fans Are My Everything.” Because I”m dedicating it to my fans.” Beyond the fact that the quote was about his album, the feature in Page Six Magazine was meant to focus on BreezyArt and Chris Brown’s newly rediscovered love of visual art. Bottom line: Chris Brown has completed his court mandated anger management courses and the majority of his community service. The judge overseeing his probation has said more than once how impressed he’s been with Chris’s progress. He has released three successful singles leading up to this album. He was even nominated for a Grammy for a mixtape track. At which point does the focus go back to his music? SMH.

GZM Developer, Imam Have Tax, Financial Issues; Will National Media Care?

This past weekend, intrepid journalists at the New York Post and NorthJersey.com released information they unearthed about proposed Ground Zero Mosque “organizer” Sharif El-Gamal and frontman Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, respectively, that the wire services, the New York Times and the national TV networks would likely have run with by now had the items related to a major church or synagogue. But since the news has to do with what has turned into the PC crowd’s cause celebre and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s personal pet project, you may not see the stories covered anywhere else. The arguably more important story of the two concerns the tax problems of Mr. El-Gamal (pictured above via the Post) and his company, because they directly related to the GZM’s property. The story by Isabel Vincent and Melissa Klein went up early Sunday morning: Mosque big owes 224G tax The mosque developers are tax deadbeats. Sharif El-Gamal, the leading organizer behind the mosque and community center near Ground Zero, owes $224,270.77 in back property tax on the site, city records show. El-Gamal’s company, 45 Park Place Partners, failed to pay its half-yearly bills in January and July, according to the city Finance Department. The delinquency is a possible violation of El-Gamal’s lease with Con Edison, which owns half of the proposed building site on Park Place. El-Gamal owns the other half but must pay taxes on the entire parcel. … Before any building can go forward, the developers also must get approval from the MTA because the 2 and 3 subway lines run under a portion of the Park Place property, The Post has learned. … El-Gamal’s spokesperson insisted to The Post that the taxes had been paid and that the “subway lines do not pose a problem.” The Post revealed this month that El-Gamal owned only half the site. The news about Imam Rauf (picture above is an AP file photo) comes from Peter J. Sampson and Jean Rimbach at NewsJersey.com (“Ground Zero Imam has history of tenant troubles; N.J. apartments in need of repair”). In addition to the problems noted in the headline, it seems that Rauf has experience squeezing money out of the political system: The Muslim cleric at the center of the proposed mosque and community center near Ground Zero is also a New Jersey landlord who got more than $2 million in public financing to renovate low-income apartments and has been beset for years by tenant complaints and financial problems. Imam Feisal A. Rauf won support for his Hudson County projects from powerful politicians, among them Robert C. Janiszewski, the disgraced former county executive. He also was awarded grants from Union City when U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez was mayor. … Rauf forged ties with Fred Daibes, the prominent waterfront developer and bank chairman. Additionally, Rauf is a onetime business ally of a Daibes associate who sued the imam for alleged mortgage fraud. The 2008 suit was quietly settled in June. The revelations about Rauf, who lives in North Bergen, add another dimension to the public profile of a man both lauded as a builder of bridges between diverse religions and cultures and vilified as being insensitive to the survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack by proposing a mosque near the World Trade Center site. … Page after page of municipal health records examined by The Record show repeated complaints ranging from failure to pick up garbage, to rat and bedbug infestations and no heat and hot water. Cynthia Balko, 48, of Union City — a longtime tenant of Rauf’s — said she’s had to live with rats, leaks and no heat: “I don’t have anything nice to say about the man.” She finds it hard to believe Rauf’s going to build a world-class Islamic community center, with fitness facilities, auditorium, restaurant, library, culinary school and art studios, as well as a Sept. 11 memorial and space for Muslim prayer services. “He can’t even repair the bells in the hallway. He doesn’t take care of his properties. But he’s going to take care of a mosque?” The biggest tax involved in all of this may be on the establishment press’s cover-up mechanisms. So far, they’re holding. As of shortly after midnight Eastern Time, three stories at the Associated Press time-stamped with Monday’s or Sunday’s date that mentioned the Ground Zero Mosque, which the AP refers to as the “Park51 project” ( here , here , and here ) had no reference to either gentleman’s difficulties. The New York Times also had nothing beyond the AP items just noted. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

NYT Finds ‘Bellicose’ Bloggers Against ‘Monument to Religious Tolerance’ (i.e., a Mosque) at Ground Zero

The New York Times continues its delicate, sympathetic coverage of NYC-centric Muslims issues with its treatment of the controversy over the Cordoba House, a proposed Muslim community center, to be topped by a mosque, that would be raised at the sight of the World Trade Center. Wednesday’s Metro section story by Javier Hernandez, ” Planned Sign of Tolerance Bringing Division Instead ” certainly made a lot of positive-sounding assumptions (starting with the headline) about the ideas behind the mosque, but failed to probe the secret details of the financiers behind it or to question the propriety of building an Islamic worship site at the same spot where thousands were murdered by radical Muslims in the name of Islam. The Cordoba House was supposed to be a monument to religious tolerance , an homage to the city in Spain where Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together centuries ago in the midst of religious foment. Its 15 stories, home to a Muslim community center and a mosque, would rise two blocks from the pit of dust and cranes where the twin towers once stood, a symbol of the resilience of the American melting pot, its supporters said. But instead of inspiring mutual respect, the center has opened deep divisions marked by vitriolic commentary , pitting Muslims against Christians, Tea Partiers against staunch liberals, and Sept. 11 families against one another. And so what began as a gesture of combined good faith by Muslims and non-Muslims has turned into a familiar game of New York City political football. The bellicose discourse was on full display on Tuesday in an auditorium at Hunter College in Manhattan as the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission considered whether to grant one of the buildings that would be torn down for the project, at 45-47 Park Place, status as a protected landmark. The entire center would occupy 45-51 Park Place. …. In recent days, politicians have called for an investigation of the group’s finances and expressed concerns about the views of its leader, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf , who has held services in a small mosque in TriBeCa since 1983. The Internet has featured fury from all sides, and some bloggers have labeled the proposal a sub-rosa effort to spread extremist Islam. Many Muslim-Americans have been taken aback by the intensity of the reaction, saying it was a sign that discrimination was alive and well nearly nine years after 9/11. But they said the vigorous opposition underscored the need for the $100 million center, which would include a 500-seat auditorium and offer a range of programs modeled on the Y.M.C.A. and the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan. El-Gamal refuses to say where the funding for the $100 million project is coming from, a detail Hernandez skips even while saying the project “began as a gesture of combined good faith by Muslims and non-Muslims.” So who are they, exactly? Hernandez wasn’t curious. Neither did he raise Rauf’s recent refusal to call Hamas a terrorist group . A 9-11 victim’s group that opposes the construction rounded up details on The Cordoba Initiative, the consortium backing the plan, the name of which didn’t appear in the Times’s article. The Times has a history of soft, sympathetic pseudo-coverage of local Muslim initiatives and controversies, going so far as to blame rival papers like the New York Post for ” relentless criticism,” in the case of principal Debbie Almontaser, dismissed from a Muslim academy in Brooklyn for defending distribution of a T-shirt by a related organization that read “Intifada NYC.”

The Long History of Scandal’s Supporting Players [Rogues Gallery]

As the heat from the Tiger Woods sex scandal cools, the once paparazzi plagued Rachel Uchitel will again settle into the cold grip of obscurity. She is one of scandal’s secondary players, and we are done with her. Thanks to a little vehicular mishap on Thanksgiving, Uchitel became a household name as the first of Tiger’s skanks to be identified. As these things usually go, we rushed to find out everything we could about her, the press called up her friends and family, her privacy was invaded, and cameras greeted her every public appearance. But now Tiger has finally apologized and we’re moving on to the next mock outrage. What’s left for Rachel? Well, not much. She’ll get some small press notes if she gets married, appears on a reality show, or goes on a killing spree or something like that. Other than that, bubkis. It’s back to the civilian life. Uchitel is one in the long line of colorful characters who we got to know and love (or love to hate) but then discarded as soon as we were done with her like a crusty Kleenex on an adolescent’s bedroom floor. Here are some other recent and notable examples in various stages of the bit player’s trajectory. Rachel Uchitel Scandal : Tiger Woods’ little infidelity thing. Role : Either one of his ladies or the lady who procured other ladies for him. Power Play : Has generally shied away from the spotlight, although that seems to be changing now that she’s accepting a gig to appear on Extra . Eventual Fate : Fading. And fading fast. Golan Cipel Scandal : Jim McGreevey ‘s coming-out and resignation as governor of New Jersey. Role : Supposedly had a relationship with McGreevey and threatened to sue him for sexual harassment, which forced the former governor to come out. Power Play : Did a media tour around the time McGreevey’s book came out and declared that he didn’t have a relationship with him. He even launched a website . Eventual Fate : Golan who? Linda Tripp Scandal : Bill Clinton ‘s sexxxy impeachment. Role : A Pentagon employee who taped conversations between herself and Clinton intern Monica Lewinsky about Lewinsky’s hanky panky with the president. Power Play : Sued the government for releasing information from her personnel records to the press. Won a $600,000 settlement and kept her pension. Fine way to retire! Eventual Fate : Went on Larry King Live to discuss her battle with breast cancer in 2003, but has been silent since then. Kato Kaelin Scandal : OJ Simpson’s murder trial. Role : Of all the characters this scandal brought us, OJ’s permanent houseguest was always our favorite. Power Play : It’s been a long road of silly movies for Kato, from radio and TV show hosting gigs to even seedier fare like serving as host of National Lampoon’s Strip Poker on pay-per-view. Eventual Fate : He is still kicking around the sad fringes of the reality TV show world, starring on the now defunct Fox Reality’s Gimme My Reality Show in 2008 and some random web series last year. Ashley Dupré Scandal : Eliot Spitzer’s hooker scandal. Role : The hooker. Power Play : She’s still trying to maker her music career happen, and moonlights as a runway model and NY Post columnist . Eventual Fate : Fighting her own downward spiral. Levi Johnston Scandal : America’s love affair with Sarah Palin . Role : He knocked up Palin’s daughter, was forced into a suit at the Republican National Convention, and was then pushed to propose to her. Power Play : He cashed in a bit with an article in Vanity Fair and earned love from the gays for his pictorial in Playgirl . He keeps threatening to write a tell-all about the Palins, but we don’t know that he knows how to write. Eventual Fate : He’s going head to head with the Palin clan in a messy custody battle . He’ll eventually be washing cars in Wasilla as a fat, bald man. Sadly. Donna Rice Scandal : Gary Hart’s sex scandal, aborted bid for the presidency. Role : She was the other woman. Power Play : A contract as spokesperson for No Excuses jeans. Eventual Fate : She works as an anti-porn advocate these days, which makes us not like her. Larry Birkhead Scandal : Anna Nicole Smith ‘s overdose and death. Role : Though many claimed to be the one, Birkhead is actually the father of Smith’s daughter, Dannilynne who was born shortly before her mother’s death. Power Play : Has been selling pictures of Dannilynne for years. Eventual Fate : Except for the persistent gay rumors, we’ll forget about him until his daughter comes of age and enters the tabloids herself. Kari Anne Peniche Scandal : The McSteamy non-sex tape. Role : This one we created all by ourselves . She was the third girl in the tub with Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart in the famous chat à trois tape. Power Play : She has a single , y’all! Eventual Fate : We didn’t even like her the first time around.
