The once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch Venus pass in front of the sun is over in the United States. The spectacle won’t happen again for another 105 years. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory , a spacecraft launched in 2010 to study the sun, was on deck to capture the rare phenomenon in stunning high-resolution. When the Earth photobombs the Sun | Bad Astronomy

The Solar Dynamics Observatory is a NASA satellite that observes the Sun 24 hours a day. It orbits the Earth, placed carefully so that it takes 24 hours to circle the Earth once — what we call a geosynchronous orbit. This maximizes its output, and allows scientists to squeeze as much data from it as possible. But, twice a year, the geometry of SDO’s orbit aligns in such a way that the Earth itself… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : DiscoverMagazine Discovery Date : 13/03/2012 18:55 Number of articles : 2

The Sun unleashes an X5.4 class flare | Bad Astronomy

Around midnight UTC last night, Active Region 1429 on the Sun exploded with a fairly large flare: rated at class X5.4 , it was among the largest seen in the current cycle. Video of the flare has been created using images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory: Yowza. This flare was big enough that it may cause some communication issues and will probably lead to some nice aurorae, but otherwise is no… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : DiscoverMagazine Discovery Date : 07/03/2012 04:37 Number of articles : 3

Earlier today, the Solar Dynamics Observatory had a front seat to a pretty nifty event: a partial eclipse of the Sun. For about 100 minutes, from its orbital viewpoint SDO saw the Moon pass in front of the Sun, partially blocking it. SDO semi-fictional mascot Camilla Corona created a really cool video of the event , using footage from different wavelengths edited together: The false color images show… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : DiscoverMagazine Discovery Date : 21/02/2012 17:19 Number of articles : 2

On Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 09:40 UT, most of the folks working for NASA were probably asleep. But NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory never sleeps: it’s only job is to stare at the Sun, 24 hours a day, every day. Good thing it does, too, because it caught a pretty decent-sized solar flare erupting from Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Bad Astronomy Discovery Date : 26/09/2011 14:00 Number of articles : 2

Bali earthquake 2011

#39;This earthquake is located too deep inside the Earth to generate a tsunami in the Indian Ocean,#39; it said. Geoscience Australia and the Hong Kong Observatory also recorded the quake at 6.2. Indonesia sits on the Pacific #39;Ring of Fire#39;, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity. A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indonesian resort island of Bali early on Friday but was located too deep to generate a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, seismologists

A New Planet — from Beyond the Galaxy

Billions of years before the Sun was born, the Milky Way galaxy flicked out its gravitational tongue and slurped down a tiny neighboring galaxy that had ventured too close. The evidence for that ancient act of cosmic cannibalism is the still-digesting remains of the meal: a handful of relatively nearby stars known as the Helmi Stream, whose weird orbits — above and below the plain of the galaxy — are a tipoff to their weird origin. Now one of those stars has a second claim to fame. HIP 13044, as it's unglamorously known, has a planet whirling around it — the first planet ever found from outside the Milky Way. Aside from its extra-galactic origin, the planet itself, found with a medium-size telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, and described in a new paper in Science, isn't especially remarkable. It's a bit bigger than Jupiter and orbits its parent star in about 16 days — a “year” so short it would once have been considered impossible for so giant a planet, until multiple discoveries of many similar worlds proved such a revolution rate to be pretty common http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2032054,00.html added by: unimatrix0
