Transgender Jenna Talackova Participates In Miss Universe Canada Pageant So what do y’all think of Jenna and those lil transgender cakes??? Pageant history was made at the Miss Universe Canada competition in Toronto Thursday night, as Jenna Talackova became the first transgender female to compete for the title. The 24-year-old took part in the evening gowns and swimsuits competitions Thursday, wearing a white clingy gown with an open back during the gown event, then switching into a tiny white bikini that showed off her endlessly long legs for the swimsuit event. It was hard to miss Talackova, if for no other reason than the fact that the 6’1 blonde beauty towered at least half a head higher over the other 61 competitors. Still, Talackova didn’t nab any of the smaller prizes handed out Thursday night that would have automatically bumped her to Saturday night’s final round. Those awards included “Best Body,” “Best Runway Model,” and the “People’s Choice” award. While many see Talackova’s hard-fought place on the stage as a victory for transgender men and women, friends and relatives of some of the other contestants say it’s unfair that Talackova is stealing the spotlight. Donavon Powell, who was there to cheer for his 24-year-old girlfriend, Vaughan Marr of Cremona, Alta., says Talackova may have overshadowed other worthy challengers. “It’s a little bit one-sided and there’s a lot of focus on maybe Jenna and maybe the issues surrounding it,” he told The Canadian Press. “I think it’s good there’s attention brought to it but I think it might be outweighing and overshadowing the rest of the competition in general.” Talackova has been the subject of international media fascination ever since she was disqualified for not being a “naturally born female” because she had undergone gender reassignment surgery when she was 19. Black girls rock, in every country in the world! Mbathio Beye has been crowned the first Miss Black France France has a new queen–beauty queen that is. Mbathio Beye has been crowned the first “Miss Black France” But there was a lot of hoopla surrounding the pageant, so we’re surprised it even took place. According to the pageant’s organizer Frédéric Royer, the goal of the event was to “celebrate black beauty,” and “to shine a light on the many Black women in this country who are rarely given any media attention.” Yet the last time woman of color to took home the “Miss France” title was only three years ago in 2009 when Chloé Mortaud won—a biracial woman of African American and French descent. Protesters have called the “Miss Black France” pageant “stupid,” “dangerous” and “hostile.” Even the founder and president of the French Representative Council of Black Associations (CRAN), Patrick Lozes, said the pageant is hardly “progressive.” But despite these strong sentiments the pageant commenced and crowned it’s queen. Beye was officially named the first “Miss Black France” Saturday night in Paris, after being selected from a pool of 1,000 applicants and ultimately competing amongst 17 other finalists. Beye, 21, hails from Senegal and is a marketing student. Damn, where is the love??? You would think that an event celebrating Black beauty that there would a little more support from a group like CRAN. Source More On Bossip! Secret Loooovers! Ashley Smith, from Chesapeake, won the pageant in Las Vegas July 17, becoming only the second African American to win the Miss United States title in the competition’s 11 years of existence. “I was actually planning to take a year off from pageants to focus on school and work,” said Smith, 23. “But something inside of me told me to give it a shot.” She entered the contest in March, and won Miss Virginia United States a month later, to earn the trip to Las Vegas. “It all happened so fast, but I knew it was all part of a great plan. I just had to be persistent and take the journey,” Smith said. As Miss United States, Smith will travel across the country for a year, promoting the Miss United States organization and her personal platform of breast cancer awareness. “My life changed forever when my mother became the first person in my family diagnosed with breast cancer. I began to look at the disease in a completely different way and vowed to educate others that breast cancer is an impartial killer,” she said. Smith, a graduate of Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, earned a degree in communication from ODU in 2010, and is currently pursuing a master’s in journalism at Regent University. She was awarded the title of Miss Virginia United States during the pageant in Richmond the weekend of April 8-10. Smith’s communication expertise helped her ace the interview portion of the contest, a key component of judging. Pageant week in Las Vegas last month saw a series of successes for Virginia entrants. The commonwealth placed young women among the top three in all four pageant categories, including Smith’s win in the biggest event. “My family and I used to make a big deal of watching pageants on TV,” Smith said. “I always thought those girls were so beautiful; I never imagined that would be me some day. Growing up, I didn’t have many friends and had very low self-esteem. Pageants helped me turn that around and today I’m able to help other young women who struggle with the same issue.” Smith has worked hard to promote breast cancer awareness for the past eight years, even before she started entering pageants. Among her community service activities, she founded and serves as executive director of the Queen of P.I.N.K. Pageant, a fundraiser event in which all the entrants are breast cancer survivors. She is also the webmaster for Relay for Life of Chesapeake and media representative for Strut the Runway for Breast Cancer Inc. “When your work comes from your heart, that work can only find another heart to reach,” she said. “It may take years before you realize the extent of your service, but genuine volunteerism always touches people’s lives in unimaginable ways.” Smith prides herself on living her “Christian Mission out loud.” How To Balance Health & Happiness EXCLUSIVE: American Idol Alumni Nearly Shot To Death During Robbery
