Yahweh Take The Wheel: 2 Jewish Infants Contract Genital Herpes After Rabbi Performs Post-Circumcision “Blood Sucking”

Yes, that means exactly what you think it means … Jewish Infants Contracting Herpes Via Rabbis Mouths Post-Circumcision Via TheDailyBeast On July 22, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene revealed that two new cases of neonatal herpes had been diagnosed during July. One baby was found at 16 days old to have “pustular lesions on the penis and genital area,” and a 17-day-old was found to have “lesions on his penis, left foot, and left thigh.” Based on the timing and the locations of the lesions, the male infants had contracted the herpes simplex virus during their Jewish circumcision custom, a bris, which occurs on the eighth day of life. Circumcisions are a standard—even beneficial—health practice. But each of these boys underwent a bris that followed an ancient ritual not widely practiced outside the ultra-Orthodox community. Metzitzah b’peh (MBP), the orogential (mouth to genitals) suctioning of blood from the penis of an infant male following circumcision, poses one of the most unique and upsetting public health issues. While infants who do not undergo MBP can contract neonatal herpes, infants who do are 3.4 times more likely to do so, according to the New York City Department of Health. Since 2000, 16 cases of neonatal herpes have resulted from MBP in New York City alone, with three proving fatal and others causing long-term health effects, including brain damage. A practice that sounds immediately abhorrent and baffling to nearly anyone outside New York’s ultra-Orthodox community has forced a controversial clash of local politics, culture, and power. MBP has been practiced for millennia with varying regularity among different sects of the Jewish community. However, in 1837, Chasam Sofer, a revered sage in the central and eastern European Jewish world, said oral suctioning could be stopped when it appeared to cause a public health crisis in Vienna. He stated that Jewish law did not state MBP as necessary for fulfilling the Jewish commandment of circumcision, and “even if oral suction had been mentioned in the Mishnah, we would be able to change it to another method which accomplishes the same thing, so long as we heed qualified physicians.” Other rabbis followed with similar rulings, and in many circles, MBP eventually fell out of practice for most Jews. Jewish leaders have condemned the MBP practice, but apparently that has fallen on deaf ears. Multiple religious authorities definitively stressed during the reporting of this article that MBP is not at all necessary to complete a bris. “The most fundamental precept of Jewish law is preservation of health, and life comes first. There’s no close second,” says Ben Hirsch, who was raised in Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox community and is now an advocate against abuse within the community. “The rabbis are obligated under Jewish law to defer to medical professionals, but they are refusing to do so, and infants are being maimed and killed.” Most succinctly, Dr. Moshe Tendler, a microbiologist and professor of Talmud at Yeshiva University, wrote in a 2004 Pediatrics article: “The rule that’s above all rules in the Torah is that you cannot expose or accept a risk to health unless there is true justification for it.” First and foremost, with all respect to Jewish tradition, that is just f*****g nasty. Secondly, why would you risk the health of an infant by showing them what that mouth do? Image via Shutterstock

Open Thread: Too Much TV and Video Games Double Attention Problems

In today’s “I Could Have Told You That” open thread segment:  Too much time spent watching television and playing video games can double the risk of attention problems in children and young adults, new research finds. The study is the latest of many to point out the ill effects of excessive screen time, whether at the computer or the television. Researcher Edward Swing, a graduate student at Iowa State University, compared participants who watched TV or played video games less than two hours a day — the recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics for children aged 2 and older — to those who watched more. “Those who exceeded the AAP recommendation were about 1.6 times to 2.2 times more likely to have greater than average attention problems,” he said. Thoughts?

Zoinks! CNN, USA Today Shocked Kids Prefer Cartoon-Endorsed Products

It didn’t take Velma, Shaggy or Scooby to uncover this mystery. In a June 21 study published in the medical journal Pediatrics, researchers from Yale University “discovered” that food products with characters on them affect children’s taste preferences, which may explain why food companies have been advertising with cartoons since at least the 1960’s . CNN.com and USA Today used the study to promote advertising restrictions and victimize consumers: “Characters from TV and movies have appeared on food products for years, but until now little research has been done to examine how they influence children’s food choices,” Sarah Klein wrote on CNN.com. Additionally, Klein chose to present the data from the study that best reflected her cause: “Fifty percent of children say that food from a package decorated with a cartoon celebrity such as Shrek tastes better than the same exact food from a plain package, according to a new study.” While 50 percent is significant, this means that 50 percent of the children in the study either did not notice a taste difference or found the other package to taste better. Not to be outdone, USA Today quoted media favorite Margo Wootan of the liberal Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), who claimed that parents and children are “outgunned” by the food companies: “Parents are outgunned by the food industry, which has market research, cartoon characters and slick ads,” Wootan said. “We don’t have Shrek, SpongeBob and the Disney princesses to get our kids to eat the foods that we want them to eat.'” While children may be attracted to products with character labels, the media are attracted to CSPI’s Big Government approach to food, whether it’s cereal or school lunches . At the very least, CNN and USA Today are consistent with the media trend of failing to hold parents accountable, and even if they do mention parents, they’re usually portrayed as victims of the corporations.

Spanking Kids Leads to Aggression

Disciplining young children is one key role of the parents. Some people would have disagreed with that and some doesn’t have any problems with it. In any ways, punishing them through spanking or any forms of corporal punishment is a thicker and more serious issue. There are different organizations in America that supports violence against children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not encourage parents to spank their children as a reason for disciplining them. This may result to a long-term effectiveness as behavior-changing tactics. Thus, the AAP campaigns strategies such as time-outs when children misbehave, which helps them reflect on what mistakes they have committed. It helps them develop their behavior in a good way by weighing the consequences that they will receive. However, as many parents would think best, few responses bring about the immediate interruption of a full-blown tantrum like a swift slap on the back. Some Universities provide strongest evidence against spanking: of all 2,000 youngsters in the study, those who were slapped more frequently at age 3 are more likely to be aggressive by age 5. This research works on the downfall of corporal punishment. Spanking children can be a good way of disciplining them but it is better if we educate them in a nice way.
