Iron Woman? If Pepper Potts Has A Future In Armor, She Needs To Kick Villain Ass

If you’ve  read about the Iron Man 3 footage that Marvel Studios has shown to bloggers, then you know that, during the Mandarin’s helicopter attack on Casa Tony Stark ( Robert Downey Jr. ), Pepper Potts ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) ends up flying to safety in one of the armored suits. It sounds like a cool scene, and I won’t be surprised if it’s a set-up for another later in the movie. But I’m not so thrilled about Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige’s  recent comments that Potts could suit up for her own adventures in future Iron Man installments. Kevin Feige Talks About Pepper Potts’ Possible Future In Armor Here’s what Feige says in an interview with About.com : I will tell you this. In this movie [ Iron Man 3 ] we play with the convention of the damsel in distress. We are bored by the damsel in distress. But, sometimes we need our hero to be desperate enough in fighting for something other than just his own life. So, there is fun to be had with “Is Pepper in danger or is Pepper the savior?” over the course of this movie. In terms of where we go with future movies, we’ll see. In the comic books she does get a taste for the suit and becomes her own hero named Rescue, who doesn’t necessarily battle other people, but is on missions to help people and to save people. Will we do that down the line with Gwyneth Paltrow? Who knows. But her being in the suit is something we have been playing with since  Iron Man 2 , where we did some designs and it didn’t end up fitting in that movie. But the little taste you saw here [in an Iron Man 3 clip] is something that we’re certainly interested in. Why Pepper Potts As Rescue Is A Jump-The-Shark Idea I hope it’s a passing interest because the idea of Paltrow’s character donning her own metal suit (insert Spanx joke here) to rescue families threatened by a hurricane or some other catastrophe sounds like a jump-the-shark premise that is devoid of the tension and smart-assery that distinguishes the Iron Man movies. I’m not familiar with the comics storyline to which Feige refers, but “Rescue” sounds like a very Saturday-morning-cartoon name. And that’s where this G-rated idea belongs. If the Marvel Studios is serious about putting Goop-curating Gwynnie in full-metal jacket mode, then they’ve got to surprise the audience by having her play against type.  Contrary to what Feige says in this interview, Paltrow should be kicking super-villain ass Michelle Rodriguez -style to the point where Tony feels threatened by her superhero potential. Now that’s an Iron Man subplot. Feel free to contact my agent. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter. Follow Movieline on  Twitter.

Astro Apologizes for X Factor Outburst

On last Thursday’s X Factor results show, Astro was voted into the bottom two – and then nearly got himself eliminated by initially refusing to sing for the judges’ vote. It was a disgraceful show of poor sportsmanship . But it also came from a young rapper who is only 15 years old, as Astro took to Facebook over the weekend and apologized for acting like a spoiled brat. Astro Sings for Survival “What I do, I do for the love of Hip-Hop and my fans, and I would never doing anything to hurt either,” he wrote. “I believed I was being mistreated… My guards are always up, and maybe I took the situation too heavy. I seriously apologize to my fans, what I said and my emotions weren’t directed toward you. I’m 15 and I think I know everything, but the truth is, I don’t, and I handled the situation wrong! Win or lose next week, I will make you all proud!” Astro added that he wants to be the “new ambassador” for hip hop, while Simon Cowell said he’s met with Astro and his father and everything is “much calmer now.” If true, that’s too bad. The X Factor was just getting exciting!

Police Pepper Spray Students at UC-Davis Occupy Protest

Footage of police in riot gear pepper spraying students at point blank range has surfaced and caused outrage at the University of California-Davis and beyond. University of California Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi, who has been called upon to resign , said in a statement that she was forming a task force to investigate. She called police action and video images, which circulated Saturday, “chilling.” Police say it was “fairly standard police procedure.” You watch and decide … Police Pepper Spray UC-Davis Students In the video, an officer dispassionately pepper-sprays a line of several sitting protesters who flinch and cover their faces but remain passive, arms interlocked. As the images and clips spread on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter over the weekend, the university’s faculty decried the school’s “gross failure of leadership.” At a news conference, Katehi said what the video shows is “sad and really very inappropriate” but defended her leadership and said she had no plans to resign. “I do not think that I have violated the policies of the institution,” she said. “I have worked personally very hard to make this campus a safe campus for all.” The protest was reportedly held in support of the overall Occupy Wall Street / Occupy Oakland movement and in solidarity with protesters at UC-Berkeley.

‘Iron Man 2’ Star Mickey Rourke On The ‘Fight’ To Be A Unique Villain

‘Everything was a little bit of a fight,’ the actor says of suggesting quirks for his character. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mickey Rourke in “Iron Man 2” Photo: Paramount Pictures Even Mickey Rourke is a little surprised that he stars in “Iron Man 2” as a metal-toothed, tattoo-skinned villain named Ivan Vanko. First off, his career up until his casting — white hot ’80s star, then Hollywood has-been, then amateur boxer and finally Oscar-nominated actor for “The Wrestler” — is not exactly the most conventional route to a starring turn in a mainstream-genre blockbuster. But, after the first “Iron Man” grossed $585 million worldwide, Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau decided they wanted Rourke — and Rourke is exactly who they got. “Like I say, time changes people and thank God the [first] movie made a lot of money due to Robert and Favreau’s direction and insight and passion for filmmaking, so they had enough juice where they could go, ‘Oh, let’s put Mickey Rourke in the movie,’ ” the actor told MTV News. “And they fought for me to be in the movie and I’m very grateful for that.” And once Rourke got the part, he had some very specific ideas for Vanko and his electrified tendril-outfitted alter ego, Whiplash. “I said to Favreau, ‘I don’t want to make him a one-dimensional meanie, a bad guy like they do in a lot of movies,’ ” Rourke explained. Rourke had in mind the villains from old Sergio Leone Westerns played by the likes of Eli Wallach or Henry Fonda. He also wanted Vanko to have a mouthful of metallic dental work, a body covered in tattoos and a white cockatoo of whom he is quite fond. “[Favreau] had to fight for the teeth and the tattoos and the bird. Everything was a little bit of a fight,” Rourke said. “The Marvel people, who could have easily said no, said yes. They trusted Jon and Jon trusted me and Robert was very supportive.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Iron Man 2.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Gwyneth Paltrow Has Some Suggestions For ‘Iron Man 3’

‘They have to mix it up a little,’ actress tells MTV News, proposing action scenes for Pepper Potts. By Eric Ditzian Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: MTV News Gwyneth Paltrow spends most of “Iron Man 2” scowling at Robert Downey Jr. over his various boyish foibles and narcissistic eccentricities. There goes Tony Stark again, hopping in a Formula One race car, just because he can. See Stark getting drunk, donning his Iron Man suit and trashing his own bachelor pad — and why the heck not? As Pepper Potts, it’s Paltrow’s job to pick up the pieces , ensuring that Tony lives to fight crime another day. That’s been fun and all, but if and when a third “Iron Man” ramps up, Paltrow would like Potts to have a chance to kick a little ass. “Maybe for the third one, if they do a third one, they have to mix it up a little,” she told MTV News. “I don’t want to just keep sitting there with a [cell phone] headpiece.” Action scenes or not, though, Paltrow says she’d be keen to join up once again. “I hope so,” she said. “That would be great.” Paltrow probably can count on it. As Downey told us , “Iron Man 3” is “going to go down.” What’s more, the man behind the armor knows exactly where the story line should go. “I have some pretty strong ideas, but they never seem to be too discordant with what the creative execs at Marvel are thinking anyway,” the actor said. But before a third “Iron Man” gets under way, Marvel will push forward with “The Avengers,” the ensemble superhero flick likely set to feature Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Might we see Pepper Potts pop up alongside Stark in that movie, which will hit theaters in 2012? The actress wasn’t so sure. “I don’t know what she would do, like, dry-clean his sh–?” Paltrow laughed. Should Pepper Potts get to kick some ass in an “Iron Man” flick? Tell us in the comments!
