Tony Stark has an unusual bout of sincerity in this new Iron Man 3 clip , which makes reference to the totally crazy events of The Avengers . Take a look: Iron Man 3 Clip Tony and Pepper The film that kicks off Marvel Phase 2 may just be the last Iron Man , as it’s seeming more and more likely that Downey, Jr. will retire from the Iron Man series . Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts, with Don Cheadle and Jon Favreau also returning to their roles. Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale, Rebecca Black, and Ben Kingsley also star. Iron Man 3 will premiere May 3.
If you’ve read about the Iron Man 3 footage that Marvel Studios has shown to bloggers, then you know that, during the Mandarin’s helicopter attack on Casa Tony Stark ( Robert Downey Jr. ), Pepper Potts ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) ends up flying to safety in one of the armored suits. It sounds like a cool scene, and I won’t be surprised if it’s a set-up for another later in the movie. But I’m not so thrilled about Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige’s recent comments that Potts could suit up for her own adventures in future Iron Man installments. Kevin Feige Talks About Pepper Potts’ Possible Future In Armor Here’s what Feige says in an interview with About.com : I will tell you this. In this movie [ Iron Man 3 ] we play with the convention of the damsel in distress. We are bored by the damsel in distress. But, sometimes we need our hero to be desperate enough in fighting for something other than just his own life. So, there is fun to be had with “Is Pepper in danger or is Pepper the savior?” over the course of this movie. In terms of where we go with future movies, we’ll see. In the comic books she does get a taste for the suit and becomes her own hero named Rescue, who doesn’t necessarily battle other people, but is on missions to help people and to save people. Will we do that down the line with Gwyneth Paltrow? Who knows. But her being in the suit is something we have been playing with since Iron Man 2 , where we did some designs and it didn’t end up fitting in that movie. But the little taste you saw here [in an Iron Man 3 clip] is something that we’re certainly interested in. Why Pepper Potts As Rescue Is A Jump-The-Shark Idea I hope it’s a passing interest because the idea of Paltrow’s character donning her own metal suit (insert Spanx joke here) to rescue families threatened by a hurricane or some other catastrophe sounds like a jump-the-shark premise that is devoid of the tension and smart-assery that distinguishes the Iron Man movies. I’m not familiar with the comics storyline to which Feige refers, but “Rescue” sounds like a very Saturday-morning-cartoon name. And that’s where this G-rated idea belongs. If the Marvel Studios is serious about putting Goop-curating Gwynnie in full-metal jacket mode, then they’ve got to surprise the audience by having her play against type. Contrary to what Feige says in this interview, Paltrow should be kicking super-villain ass Michelle Rodriguez -style to the point where Tony feels threatened by her superhero potential. Now that’s an Iron Man subplot. Feel free to contact my agent. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

With the first Iron Man 3 trailer premiering on Tuesday, Disney whet franchise fans’ appetites by releasing a 17-second teaser trailer and poster for the latest installment of the metallic Marvel superhero saga. The trailer is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it deals that raises more questions than it answers, but, based on the movie-trailer-foreshadowing course I took in college, Pepper Potts ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) will be in some definite danger come May. Next to Downey, Potts’ character gets even more attention than what appears to be a from-the-rear shot of super-villain Mandarin, who will be played by Ben Kingsley . The weird thing is that when I first saw the Potts scene, I thought Paltrow was laughing. I figured this was trailer shorthand for establishing Potts/Paltrow as such a heart-lifting force in cynical Tony Stark’s life that, well, something bad has to happen to her. Turns out the teaser trailer is way more direct than that. Judging from Paltrow’s sweaty appearance and confinement in some weird restraining device that looks like it was borrowed from a Six Flags roller coaster, Pepper’s in a world of pain. Could it be [cue ominous music]…torture at the hands of the dastardly Mandarin? (More about him in a later post.) Either that, or maybe Paltrow’s character is undergoing some kind of state-of-the-art psychological treatment in which she’s just learned that Goop was seriously jank idea. Regardless of the interpretation of Gwynnie’s facial expression, my conclusion remains the same: She’s going to be in harm’s way in Iron Man 3 , which jibes with the this-time-it’s-personal synopsis that Disney released on Thursday. In case you’ve forgotten: Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Here’s the teaser trailer. I hope tomorrow’s longer version reveals more. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.
