Game Says Going Independent May Be A ‘Really, Really Good Move’

Rapper’s fifth LP, F.I.V.E., could be his last album with Interscope. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia ‘The Poetess’ Morris The Game Photo: MTV News Game only has one LP left on his Interscope contract, and after he drops the follow-up to 2011’s The R.E.D. Album, the platinum-selling Compton rapper will contemplate his musical independence. “Independent. That seems like a really, really good move where I can capitalize off of all the finances being made off of my music for once. But, I don’t know, I kinda like having a lot of help, a lot of assistance from a big label,” Game told MTV News on Thursday. “I don’t know, maybe we’ll have a meeting about a lot of money or I’ll be talking to my conscience.” Earlier this month, Game announced his new album title, F.I.V.E., to XXLMag.com , but it may be some time before it hits shelves. “I haven’t even started working on it yet. I first came up with the album title, which is F.I.V.E., and then came up with its acronym, which is Fear Is Victory’s Evolution,” he explained to MTV News. “It’s got a good concept, and once the budget is open on that I’ll get to rolling.” Game, who was the subject of Thursday night’s “Behind the Music” on VH1, is reluctant to offer up anything resembling a release date due to the multiple push-backs that he’s experienced with The R.E.D. Album. “You what I learned from this last album is to never give anybody a date to anything; I’ll let the label do that when it’s time,” he said. On Wednesday, Game released his “The City” video with Kendrick Lamar. But it looks like that will be the last single he drops off of The R.E.D. Album. “Personally I’d like to just move on and get the budget open for my fifth album, which is something I don’t think Interscope is too much in a rush to do, being that it’s my last contractual, obligated album on the label,” he said. “I would love to just keep it rolling.” Should Game go independent or stick with Interscope? Swedish House Mafia Focus On Future Releases, Expanding Tour

Trio parts ways with annual Pacha Ibiza residency in 2012. By Adam Stewart, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Swedish House Mafia Photo: MTV News There’s a good chance your ears are still ringing from Swedish House Mafia ‘s takeover of Madison Square Garden , which was streamed live, over the weekend, but now that New York is back to normal and you’ve had a chance to watch the “Antidote” video a hundred times, it’s safe to say that Swedish House Mafia fans the world over are anxiously awaiting what’s next from the rock stars of house music. After months of rumors and chatter on studio work, MTV News sat down with the boys to see just what their plan of attack for 2012 and beyond really is. “There’s stuff in the works,” Steve Angello said. “Obviously, we always have stuff in the works .” “But there’s something that’s really close,” Axwell teased. Whether that means an album or the formal release what’s being dubbed “Inks” (which is rumored to be the new SHM single and debuted as the MSG opener on Friday), any chatter of fresh SHM tunes is certainly welcome news to their loyal following. But SHM admit they aren’t sure what form any of their releases will take. “We haven’t decided yet,” Angello admitted. “We would like to obviously present something, more of a fuller experience,” Axwell added. “[But] we still have to be together in the studio to finish it,” Angello continued. Even though “Save the World,” their remix of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” and “Antidote” have unequivocally pacified the masses, it is perfectly clear that everyone wants more. “We really are focusing on getting together and finishing stuff,” Axwell said. “We kind of cleared our schedules a bit and [are making] fairly clever decisions of when we are doing a tour — let’s rent a villa, let’s put in a studio, let’s work! Those kind of things.” Part of that focus includes parting ways with their now-legendary, Monday night gig at Pacha Ibiza, where for three years, they held residencies with The Dark Forest and most recently Masquerade Motel — both were must-sees for anyone’s visiting the Balearic shores. “This coming year we’ll probably do more shows,” Angello explained. “But it will be more spread out. Seventeen shows in Ibiza might be 17 shows around the world instead, which I would prefer now because — it’s a big world.” A world that’s actually become a lot smaller in a sense thanks in large part to SHM courting the masses into one big EDM family. In all likelihood, this coming year, the Mafia will continue charting new territories and pushing the boundaries, all the while making us smile. “You’ve seen how we work through the years,” Angello said. “It’s just growing and growing and growing — and we’re gonna grow some more — and hopefully Axwell is gonna grow a beard!” “I’m trying!” Axwell laughed “Mustache is not a problem. It’s the rest of the beard that’s a problem. It’s called a ‘model’s’ beard. I prefer to call it that. I have a model’s beard.” What tunes are you looking forward to Steve, Ax and Seb releasing? Drake Wants Video For Rihanna Duet To Be His ‘Best’

‘We’re working on definitely the ‘Take Care’ video,’ Drizzy reveals to MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia “The Poetess” Morris Drake Photo: MTV News To Drake , Take Care is the story of a kid who goes from wide-eyed Toronto dreamer to rap royalty. But while Drizzy has painted that picture through songs on his sophomore set, the Young Money star hopes to roll out more visuals in support of the album’s narrative, and he has big plans for one video in particular. We’ve already seen “Marvins Room” and “Headlines,” the Lil Wayne-assisted “The Motto” is already in the can , and when MTV News caught up with him backstage at the Power 106 Cali Christmas Concert , Drizzy Drake revealed he’s set to shoot a clip for the title track with Rihanna. “It’s a project where I think visuals are called for, for a lot of those records,” he said. “So we’re working on definitely the ‘Take Care’ video, which we’re trying to get shot soon and a couple of other ones, too, off the album.” Drake, who can now hoist another platinum plaque for Take Care, wouldn’t dish on the treatment or concept for the video, but he has high expectations for it. “I want to make it perfect — the best video I’ve done to date — so I’m just taking my time,” he said. The Jamie xx-produced “Take Care,” with its pounding bass drum and sparse piano melody, tells the story of two lovers ready to leave behind their sketchy pasts in favor of a fruitful relationship together. Drake and Rih’s real-life fling (one the rapper addressed on 2010’s “Fireworks”) only helps to enhance the song’s appeal. Standing as both an endearing duet and a club banger, it’s the danceable, Gil-Scott Heron-sampling house build toward the end of the song that truly makes it a standout. Drake, Big Sean Look To 2012 At Cali Christmas Concert

Drake preps intimate ‘Club Paradise’ Tour as Big Sean finishes Finally Famous Over Everything mixtape. By Felicia “The Poetess” Morris Drake performs at Power 106’s Cali Christmas 2011 on Friday Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images L.A. Power 106’s Cali Christmas Concert on Friday night got fans in the holiday spirit as headliners Drake , Big Sean and J. Cole took the stage alongside newcomers Audio Push, LoveRance and YG. Drake , who had a stellar 2011, told MTV News that 2012 will be more about “growth” and “challenging” himself. He’s gearing up for his upcoming “Club Paradise” Tour, his first headlining run, which will take place at smaller venues around the U.S. and bigger arenas in the U.K. Drizzy said he loves performing for intimate crowds. “I just like the energy. I like people to feel close to me,” he explained. The Toronto rapper will play for about 6,000 to 9,000 people every night, mostly college students, a demographic he said he feels most loyal to. “I chose to do that because I just feel like those are the kids that downloaded So Far Gone off of October’s Very Own that night and have been riding with me ever since,” he shared. “I don’t want them to ever feel like I left them or like we’re disconnected, so I’m just gonna go back and I’m gonna bring them a real tour into those college spaces.” As the second wing of the tour expands overseas to the U.K. toward the end of March, so will his audience size. The 25-year-old admitted he’s not yet confident about playing the bigger arenas. “Watching me from a 500-level of an arena, I don’t know if I’m mentally there yet,” he confessed. “I don’t know if I can mentally accept that.” Joined by Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, Drake’s North American tour is scheduled to start February 14. For Big Sean , 2011 was one of the best years of his life. “It’s definitely a breakthrough year for me,” the Detroit native told MTV News, sporting white mink headgear. “I had my first songs on the radio; I got my first gold and platinum plaques. I’ve been really having a great time.” Big Sean promised fans that his Finally Famous Over Everything mixtape will be completed near the top of the year. “It’s just about done,” he said. “Give it a couple more weeks just to shoot some videos, really get it prepared for the people and just really take over.” In addition to the FFOE mixtape, Big Sean will touch down on a couple of songs on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music compilation, also featuring labelmates Common, Mos Def, John Legend, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Cyhi the Prynce and Mr. Hudson. Related Artists Drake Big Sean J. Cole

Wiz Khalifa, Ice Cube, Lupe Fiasco Mix It Up At L.A.’s Powerhouse

50 Cent, Trey Songz, Snoop Dogg surprise fans at Power 106 show, which also featured Big Sean, Jeremih, LMFAO, the Rej3ctz and T-Pain. By Felicia “The Poetess” Morris Wiz Khalifa at Power 106’s Powerhouse 2011 on Saturday Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Radio station Power 106 held their annual sold-out Powerhouse concert at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on Saturday night, bringing together multiple generations of hip-hop stars, from West Coast OG Ice Cube to L.A.’s latest dance-craze instigators the Rej3ctz to a chart-topping visitor from out east, Wiz Khalifa . The Rej3ctz opened the show with a high-energy performance and later danced onstage with the very colorful LMFAO as they performed “Shots.” Sporting a white T-shirt and bright yellow cargo shorts, T-Pain took it up a couple notches with a string of his hits and left fans fully charged with DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win.” The evening had a couple of surprises on deck: 50 Cent joined Jeremih on their collabo “Down on Me,” which Jeremih said was the first time they’ve ever performed the song together in concert. Compton’s own DJ Quik gave loyal fans what they came for, and when Lupe Fiasco pulled young crooner Trey Songz onstage during his set, screaming concertgoers raised the decibels to new heights. The Don Mega himself, Ice Cube, brought out his old N.W.A bandmate MC Ren on the song “Hello.” “It makes you feel good, being in the game as long as I have,” Ice Cube told MTV News before the show. “I done went from new school to old school and still here. You can’t do nothing but be humbled by the fact that so many rappers is gone. … I’m still here after all this time.” Cube was also the most-anticipated act of the evening by fellow performers including the headliner, Wiz Khalifa. “This is my first time performing at Powerhouse, my first time performing at an event this big, so I feel elated,” Wiz told MTV News before his set. “I’m really excited about seeing Cube.” But Khalifa had another trick up his sleeve when it came to honoring L.A.’s hip-hop roots: He brought out his “High School” co-star Snoop Dogg for one last Powerhouse surprise, no doubt leaving 18,000 fans feeling like they got their money’s worth.
