Cat Adopts Puppy, Wins Grant For Charity

Earlier this year, a mother cat called Lurlene “adopted” a pit bull puppy called Noland and nursed the little canine back to health after he was abandoned. A humane officer stumbled upon the day-old pit bull covered in fleas in a Cleveland garage, and took the dog to the Cleveland Animal Protective League. There, the group decided to place Noland with Lurlene, who had also just been taken off the streets and had recently given birth to four baby kittens. Molly, Noland’s mother, was discovered later that day looking anxious and famished. She was unable to care for Noland herself, so he stayed with Lurlene. He made it through those difficult first few weeks. Eventually, he was placed in a foster home with puppies his age where he learned how to be a dog. He still visits his “mother” and “siblings” on occasion, however. As a result, the Cleveland APL, which rescued the pair, won a $25,000 grant from the Petco Foundation’s “Holiday Wishes Grant Campaign” contest. “Noland blended in with the family so well, he was even found using the litter box a few times,” Judy Hunter, APL’s director of development, wrote to Petco. Sharon Harvey, APL’s director, said the story of the dog and cat isn’t just ute, but emblematic of the “power of forgiveness and unconditional love and acceptance.” “That’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it?”

Before and After "Weight Loss" Pictures Debunked, Deconstructed By Personal Trainer

An Australian personal trainer was fed up with misleading “Before and After” pictures used to sell programs and pills, so she set out to prove a point. And prove it she did. Inspired by a similar project by personal trainer Andrew Dixon, Mel V. decided to make her own transformation in under 15 minutes. Yes, minutes. Because with improved posture, tanning lotion, black bathing suit bottoms and a few clever photo tricks, that’s all it took to look like this: “Check out my transformation! It took me 15 minutes,” Mel wrote on Instagram. “Wanna know my secret?” She added, and went on to explain them in detail. “Well firstly I ditched the phonewallet (fwallet) cause that *** is lame, swapped my bather bottoms to black (cause they’re a size bigger and black is slimming).” Next, she “smothered on some fake tan, clipped in my hair extensions, stood up a bit taller, sucked in my guts, popped my hip, threw in a skinny arm.” Then, to add a little flair, she “stood a bit wider #boxgap, pulled my shoulders back and added a bit of a cheeky / I’m so proud of my results smile.” Finally, for the coup de grace, she ” zoomed in on the before pic , zoomed out on the after and added a filter. Cause filters make everything awesome.” She followed up with a blog post on how misleading transformation pics can be, and the dangers of having unrealistic expectations for quick results. “What a before and after shot doesn’t tell you how the person achieved it. It doesn’t tell you if they did it a healthy way or if they starved themselves for weeks on end to get there.” “It also doesn’t show you the persons mental state,” she adds, or “their self worth.” Photos won’t show you “the hours of exercise, the lifestyle change, the early mornings, the skipped lunches, how they handled social situations or how many skinny mini teas they chugged.” Makes you think.
