Taylor Swift Donates $1 Million to Louisiana Flooding Victims

She may have just endured a rough few weeks from a PR standpoint, but today, Taylor Swift reminded us yet again that when it comes to using her fame and fortune to affect positive change in the world, she truly has no rival. With all the daily drama coming out of Rio and the mouth of a certain cotton candy-haired real estate mogul, the current situation in Louisiana hasn’t been receiving its rightful place at the top of every news broadcast, but it’s almost unimaginably horrific. At least 11 have been killed and thousands have lost their homes in flooding of historic proportions. Yesterday, Swift cut a check for $1 million to the state’s disaster relief fund. Today, the singer issued the following statement to fans via social media: “We began The 1989 World Tour in Louisiana, and the wonderful fans there made us feel completely at home. The fact that so many people in Louisiana have been forced out of their own homes this week is heartbreaking. “I encourage those who can to help out and send your love and prayers their way during this devastating time.” View Slideshow: 13 Reasons We Adore Taylor Swift Fans of Swift’s know that the mega-wealthy star (with an estimated worth of $250 million) has a long history of helping those in need. Last year, Taylor donated $50,000 to New York City public schools . Shortly thereafter, she gave another $50,000 to a cancer stricken fan . Perhaps even more meaningful than her financial contributions, however, are the ways in which the hard-working singer takes time for her fans who are going through difficult times. Taylor has visited children’s hospitals to hang out and sing for terminally ill kids on multiple occasions, and her open letters to fans who have suffered losses or been victims of bullying have discovered millions. So even if you’re staunchly Team Katy or Calvin, you can take a moment to set aside petty celebrity feuds and acknowledge that regardless of her bad blood with other famous folks, Taylor has unquestionably used her position to do some good in the world. Drake Disses Jay Z, Lint Rolls Pants at Raptors Game

The Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets are currently facing off in round one of the NBA playoffs and while the two teams have played an exciting series thus far, the real entertainment is in the stands, where Drake has become Canada’s answer to Spike Lee. During game one on Saturday, Drake – a Toronto resident – took a bizarre shot at native Brooklynite Jay Z, claiming that Hov was sitting at home “eating a fondue plate” during the game. Drake: Jay Z Diss Burn! We think. Does Drake know you don’t eat fondue from a plate? Anyway, Drake’s strange behavior isn’t limited to talking trash. The man might go to Clippers games with Rihanna but in T.O. He goes solo…and gets weird. For example, during last night’s game Drizzy busted out a lint roller and started getting gussied up about three feet from the action on court. You brought a lint roller to a basketball game, so you can’t really knock a dude for eating fondue. What you did is way weirder. Ryan Lewis’ Mother is HIV Positive; Macklemore Producer Starts Foundation

Ryan Lewis – the hip hop producer best known for his work with Macklemore – revealed today that his mother is HIV positive. Lewis made the announcement today via Twitter in a statement that also includes a link to donate to the 30/30 Project – an HIV/AIDS research charity that he founded with help from Macklemore. In his statement, the Grammy winner revealed that his mother contracted the illness after receiving a blood transfusion in 1984. At that time, little was known about HIV and Julie Lewis’ prognosis was grim. She pulled through, however, and the name of Ryan’s foundation is a tribute to his mother’s 30 years of survival. Lewis concluded his statement by saying, “I am honored to be the first donor to the 30/30 Project…I am asking you to join my family and see how far we can take this.” AIDS research has progressed significantly in recent years with doctors suggesting a cure for HIV may be possible in the near future. Naturally, further research is still required and treatment for current victims remains a pressing concern. So while some hip hop stars busy themselves lint rolling their pants at basketball games, Ryan Lewis and Macklemore have clearly committed themselves to using their fame to promote an important and personal cause.

Cat Adopts Puppy, Wins Grant For Charity

Earlier this year, a mother cat called Lurlene “adopted” a pit bull puppy called Noland and nursed the little canine back to health after he was abandoned. A humane officer stumbled upon the day-old pit bull covered in fleas in a Cleveland garage, and took the dog to the Cleveland Animal Protective League. There, the group decided to place Noland with Lurlene, who had also just been taken off the streets and had recently given birth to four baby kittens. Molly, Noland’s mother, was discovered later that day looking anxious and famished. She was unable to care for Noland herself, so he stayed with Lurlene. He made it through those difficult first few weeks. Eventually, he was placed in a foster home with puppies his age where he learned how to be a dog. He still visits his “mother” and “siblings” on occasion, however. As a result, the Cleveland APL, which rescued the pair, won a $25,000 grant from the Petco Foundation’s “Holiday Wishes Grant Campaign” contest. “Noland blended in with the family so well, he was even found using the litter box a few times,” Judy Hunter, APL’s director of development, wrote to Petco. Sharon Harvey, APL’s director, said the story of the dog and cat isn’t just ute, but emblematic of the “power of forgiveness and unconditional love and acceptance.” “That’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it?”

Wade Robson to Launch Foundation For Child Abuse Victims

Wade Robson, who accuses Michael Jackson of molesting him, says a big part of coming forward was that he wants to help child sex abuse victims. The 30-year-old dancer/choreographer is launching his own foundation to help child sex abuse victims through new age healing, according to reports. Robson founded a non-profit organization called “Hearts in Our Hands” on July 1. His rep says the group will be dedicated to preventing abuse, and taking a holistic approach – meditation, therapy, yoga – to treating abuse victims. Wade is very much into yoga himself lately, according to sources. Robson made headlines this spring when he said Michael Jackson molested him as a child – repeatedly at that, when Wade was 7-14 years old. The Jackson Estate and family members have dismissed Wade’s claims as a money grab, but he claims he only recently broke free of the brainwashing . Do you believe Robson’s claims against Jackson? Prince Harry Wants to Make Princess Diana Proud With AIDS Charity Work

Prince Harry spoke about his charity work Wednesday night in South Africa, and of his late mother, who instilled the passion in him for giving back. Princess Diana worked to help those with HIV/AIDS, and now Harry, 28, is doing the same in the tiny kingdom of Lesotho, where he’s visiting now. The younger Prince of Wales observed the work of the charity Sentebale that he set up with friend Prince Seeiso in memory of their late mothers. Harry said he hoped both mothers would be looking down with pride. “I hope she would be proud of what we are trying to achieve in her name,” Harry said of Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso. “I hope my mother will be proud, too.” “Maybe, just maybe, they are together somewhere up there, with blueprints and sketches already mapped out! I can only hope we put the swings in the right place.” “Talking about HIV and understanding it isn’t dangerous,” Harry said on a more serious note at the dinner. “Denying it, or not knowing about it, definitely is.” Harry, who made news earlier this week by being linked to socialite Cressida Bonas , sensed that their efforts were beginning to have an effect. “We are now seeing many of these children begin to fulfill their ambitions and realize dreams that once seemed completely impossible,” he said. “Our aim and hope is that we can influence a continued decline in the transmission of HIV and increase life expectancy, in a unique way for Lesotho.” “By addressing the psychological and social needs of the next generation, the future of this very small and beautiful country, and its magnificent people, could and should be very bright.” Whatever you think of the brother of Prince William and brother-in-law of Kate Middleton , it’s impossible to argue with those words – and his actions here.
