The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned the Best Britney Video of All Time . But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career. For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a Femme Fatale, giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it’s probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News’ Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, just behind Lil Wayne. “When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative,” she recalled in the MTV special “I Am the Femme Fatale.” “That’s when my mom realized I’m a really creative person.” She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. Kris Allen Explains ‘Weird’ Video Treatment For ‘The Truth’

‘There is a concept, kind of,’ former American Idol says of the video for his next song. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Kris Allen admits that when fans listen to his duet with Train frontman Pat Monahan, “The Truth,” it may come off as some sort of romantic duet. But he explained that there’s another way of looking at it. And he hopes that when the video is shot, that other, less romantic take on the song is made clear. “There is a concept, kind of. I got sent a video treatment by the same guy who did ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ [director Marco Puig] and it sounded interesting,” Allen recently told MTV News. “So I think it’s gonna happen. He’s really creative. I really like him [and] it’s a really weird treatment. In some way [Pat will be in the video], yes. The way that he was gonna be involved was not [romantic]. It kind of made sense.” Despite what anyone might think of the song’s meaning, Allen says the fans have been liking it. “We played it Atlanta the other night and people were freaking out about it. I think people really enjoy it,” he explained, adding that the jury on Allen and Monahan is still out about the song’s message. For instance, when the guys sing “I still keep your photographs/ I remember how we used to laugh/ I can keep on losing sleep/ If you’re OK with being torn in half,” could they be singing about each other? “We were talking about this other day. I think it’s more of maybe an experience thing or maybe we have dated the same girl and she did the same thing to both of us and now we’re in the broken boyfriend/girlfriend club,” he said. And if fans are hoping for some new music from Allen sometime soon, Allen says he’s working on it. “I am, you know, a little bit now,” he revealed. “We’re in the mode and we have a schedule. There’s a couple things out there. I’m excited about it. I would love to bring [the band to the recording sessions] if they would like to. Mark Ballas to Dancing with the Stars Fans: Lay Off Kate Gosselin!

Len has called her dancing “dreadful.” Bruno has called her the super bitch from hell . Tony Dovolani just wants her gone at any cost. America won’t oblige, however, at least not yet. Kate Gosselin’s controversial stint on Dancing with the Stars continues Monday. Will it be her last performance? Maybe, maybe not. But Mark Ballas, who was inexplicably eliminated first this season with Shannen Doherty, thinks er need to cut the reality mom some slack. Mark Ballas (left) is showing Kate Gosselin some love . “She’s really out of her element, thrown in the deep end,” Ballas says . “I think she’s doing a really good job, and I think people need to give her a break. I absolutely sympathize with her. She’s never done this before. It’s difficult.” This isn’t to say he thinks Kate Gosselin is even remotely good , just that we should back off a little. Until she quits her non-stop whining , don’t expect it. As for who he likes to hoist the coveted disco ball come season’s end, Mark is high on Jake Pavelka, Nicole Scherzinger, Evan Lysacek and Erin Andrews. “I like Erin and Maks together,” he said of Erin and partner / rumored beau Maksim Chmerkovskiy. “What they did with the blindfold was really creative.” Who are you rooting for on Dancing with the Stars?
