The Trump Effect: FBI Report Reveals That Hate Crimes Have Risen 17% Since That Orange Person Was Elected Into Office

FBI Reports Increase In Hate Crimes Since Trump Took Office In news that probably won’t surprise anyone, prejudice-based crimes have gone up ever since a certain someone took the reigns on the nation. A new FBI report detailing hate crime statistics has found that local law enforcement offices reported 7,175 hate crimes to the Buereau’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program in 2017. That figure was up from 6,121 crimes in 2016, a 17% increase. Now, it’s worth noting that more precincts participated in the reporting program in 2017 than in 2016, so that potentially impacted the increase. To further break it down, the FBI also documented precisely which biases the attacks were based on . 59.6% of crimes were perpetrated on the basis of race/ethnicity/ancestry 20.6% were over religion , and 15.8% were on the grounds of sexual orientation. That doesn’t even include the 69 crimes that took place on the grounds of multiple prejudices at once (such as an African American transperson, for instance). You can view the full report broken down by location, crimes, offenders, and discriminated against groups HERE . What do you think of the report?? WENN

On December 15th, Jeff Lord predicted that Ron Paul would have to “seriously answer” for his newsletters as he ascended in the polls in Iowa. As Jeff points out these questions were raised in January 2008 in Reason by David Weigel and Julian Sanchez. I would add that their reporting built on the groundwork laid by James Kirchick in The New Republic earlier that month. Six days later, Paul failed to… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Amspecblog Discovery Date : 22/12/2011 06:01 Number of articles : 2

Newsweek’s Howard Fineman Moving to Huffington Post

He currently works for one of the most liberal magazines in America while contributing to without a doubt the most liberal news network on television. As such, it only seems fitting that as many of Newsweek’s employees flee the transitioning ship, Howard Fineman would go to the unashamedly far-left leaning Huffington Post.   Makes you wonder if he’ll still feign any air of objectivity in his new position reported by the New York Times Sunday:  Howard Fineman, one of the more recognizable pundits on cable television and a correspondent for Newsweek for 30 years, is leaving the magazine to become a senior editor at The Huffington Post. Mr. Fineman said that he relished the opportunity that moving to an online platform afforded him. “It really wasn’t a difficult decision at all once I really began to think about it because this is where the action is,” he said. “The chance to dive head long into the future is one that I don’t think anyone could pass up.” Mr. Fineman, who will begin his new job this week, will become senior politics editor, overseeing and steering The Huffington Post’s political coverage from its Washington bureau. He will remain a paid analyst for MSNBC, but will have to discontinue his column for MSNBC.com. So, he’s now going to be a senior editor “overseeing and steering The Huffington Post’s political coverage from its Washington bureau” while remaining “a paid analyst for MSNBC.” But his reporting will be totally impartial.  Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more!

Asterisk Alert: AP Story on Jobless Claims Doesn’t Note Labor Dept. Report Missing Data of Nine States

What if reporters hunting and pecking for happy economic news are playing up incomplete government reports? Take this AP story by Jeannine Aversa on hopes rising over jobless claims: The number of people signing up for unemployment benefits dropped to the lowest level in two months, an encouraging sign that companies aren’t resorting to deeper layoffs even as the economy has lost momentum. The Labor Department reported Thursday that new claims for unemployment aid plunged last week by a seasonally adjusted 27,000 to 451,000. Economists had predicted a much smaller decline of just 2,000. But wait, we have an asterisk alert: did the Labor Department really get data from all 50 states? Bloomberg News explained, ahem, that nine states did not report actual numbers: For the latest reporting week, nine states didn’t file claims data to the Labor Department in Washington because of the federal holiday earlier this week, a Labor Department official told reporters. As a result, California and Virginia estimated their figures and the U.S. government estimated the other seven, the official said. There’s nothing wrong with reporting the Labor Department estimates — but every story ought to include the missing-states paragraph in their stories, and reporters ought to restrain their “hopes rise” talk considering the incompleteness of the reporting. This Aversa story (or at least this version) doesn’t have that information. If this was a GOP Labor Department, isn’t it possible reporters would be more skeptical that the government estimates might have some administration spin in them?
