Christiane Amanpour Hosts “This Week” of ABC

Christiane Amanpour , 52, is hosting “This Week” of ABC in a move that is seen by many as Amounpour’s way of joining the arena of US political talk shows in the likes of “Meet the Press” and “Fox News Sunday” from rival networks. Amannpour replaces George Stephanopoulos on the show”  and her first stint on the TV show observed to be confident and quite aggressive though many people opined there was no significant change on “This Week” program format. On her first hosting job, she had Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi and Defense top honcho Robert Gates as guests on pre-taped interviews.  While the second part of the show consisted of its regular commentaries and analyses on certain issues. Amanpour echoed this sentiment during her first hosting job of “This Week” after jumping off ship from CNN, “Having witnessed firsthand the global challenges and opportunities that America faces every day, I’m also eager to open a window on the world and cut through those classified issues that we all confront.” People are showing confidence that Amanpour at the helm of ABC’s Sunday political talk show, she would infuse a more global approach on dissecting the most pressing of America’s domestic issues and concern. General who said it was ‘fun to shoot people’ takes over US Central Command

A senior US general once criticised for saying it was “fun to shoot some people” has been picked to take over US Central Command, leading the military command running the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. General James Mattis, the current head of the US Joint Forces Command and who previously led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, had widely been tipped as the next head of Central Command. President Barack Obama must formalise the nomination, which then goes to Congress for approval. Centcom, as it is known, oversees operations in a volatile swathe of the world that covers 20 countries and stretches from Egypt across the Middle East and into south and central Asia. Robert Gates, the defence secretary, praised the four-star general as “one of the military's most innovative and iconoclastic thinkers.” Mr Gates also dismissed concerns about his 2005 comments, saying Mattis had learned his lesson http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7880617/General-who-s… added by: CarlosBobthe3rd

Obama Backs Away from Intergalactic Domination

The story at the bottom link is from Wired, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates Statement follows: “Today, I'm pleased to welcome the release of the President's National Space Policy. I fully support the vision it lays out. This policy clearly articulates the right space policies and priorities for our nation, and is also a pledge that the United States will maintain the leadership and capabilities in space imperative for our national security. “Our continued presence in space is vital to our national security. Space-based capabilities are critical to our military's ability to navigate accurately, strike precisely, and gather battle space awareness efficiently. However, changes in the space environment over the last decade challenge our operations. Today, space is increasingly contested as our systems face threats of disruption and attack, increasingly competitive as more states, private firms, and others develop space-based capabilities, and increasingly congested with orbital debris. “Together with other departments and agencies, the Department of Defense will take a number of steps to support the new National Space Policy, and will work with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to develop a strategy document to address specific national security requirements for outer space. We will look to leverage growing international and commercial expertise to enhance U.S. capabilities and reduce vulnerabilities. “Finally, we will pursue activities consistent with the inherent right of self-defense, deepen cooperation with allies and friends, and work with all nations toward the responsible and peaceful shared presence in space.” The White House statement, the fact sheet and the text of the National Space Policy are available online at http://www.defense.gov/spr/ under “Related U.S. Govt Publications.” http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/06/obama-backs-away-from-intergalactic-domi… added by: Incredulous
