Will Arnold Schwarzenegger Love-Child Scandal Affect His Movie Career?

‘Philandering has rarely, if ever, hurt anyone’s career in Hollywood,’ one expert tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Arnold Schwarzenegger Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images As Arnold Schwarzenegger makes plans to resurrect his career in Hollywood after seven years in the California governor’s mansion, the 63-year-old actor-turned-politician-turned-actor again made the startling revelation that he’d fathered a child with a member of his family’s household staff . In recent weeks, Schwarzenegger’s name had cropped up in a number of potential projects, some more realistic than others, from the Brad Furman-directed drama “Cry Macho” and a fifth “Terminator” to a wild rumor about a sequel to the 1988 comedy “Twins.” The question now is how, if at all, Arnie’s revelation — following news that his wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver, was leaving him — will affect his plans to kick-start a movie career. “This will, essentially, go away,” said David Poland of Movie City News. “He’ll be on ‘Leno’ next week to put this all behind him. Maybe two weeks — depends on how much the kid looks like him and how many weeks the tabloids run the photo on the front page. But eating this privately is not his way.” Disclosures about Schwarzenegger’s bad behavior, of course, are nothing new. As Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere put it, “It’s been an industry legend for a long time that Arnold Schwarzenegger is a hound.” Back in 2003, during his recall election to unseat then-Governor Gray Davis, stories abounded about Schwarzenegger’s boorish behavior with women “on movie sets, in studio offices and in other settings over the last three decades stories,” as the Los Angeles Times wrote at the time. Those allegations didn’t prevent Arnie from winning the election and serving as governor for two terms, and industry insiders suggest this latest development is unlikely to trip up his moviemaking potential. “Philandering has rarely, if ever, hurt anyone’s career in Hollywood,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “He has already taken the proper steps by admitting his transgressions and facing the press directly. And on his career side, his role as the Governator only stoked his box-office cred, as he is hotter than ever, moving forward with several high-profile film projects. I don’t think this comes as a shock to anyone, as people have known for quite some time that Schwarzenegger is something of a lady’s man.” The point is that, from politicians to actors and beyond, people tend to be forgiven over time for their sexual misadventures. The public is less merciful when scandals involve matters beyond the bedroom. Just ask perhaps the most toxic man in Hollywood. “The Mel Gibson controversy hung around because of how shocking it was,” said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. “Arnold made a very human mistake here, and I think people can forgive something like this relatively easily.” If anything, the real challenge for Schwarzenegger is not if he can withstand this scandal, but how successfully he can transform his career at age 63. Should he follow the path of someone like Clint Eastwood, who transitioned from gunslinger to Oscar darling? Or perhaps Sylvester Stallone, who continues to churn out action-oriented fare well into his 60s? On this question, Hollywood observers are split. “He needs to figure out what his onscreen character will be for this, his third act in the movie biz,” Poland said. “Young and dumb was first. In control was second act. And now? Figuring out who the audience wants him to be is really his biggest challenge.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Pearl Jam Say ‘Twenty’ Documentary Shows ‘Highs, Lows’

Cameron Crowe-directed retrospective set to premiere in September. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder Photo: Michel Linssen/ Redferns On October 22, 1990, Mookie Blaylock played their first official show at the Off Ramp Cafe in Seattle. Rock historians would come to imbue this event with understandable import: After all, Mookie Blaylock would go on to become Pearl Jam, one of the most important rock outfits of the past two decades. And now, with the 20th anniversary of that debut show on the horizon, the members of Pearl Jam are looking back for the first time in their careers — and they still can’t believe they’ve made it this far. Luckily, they’ve got Cameron Crowe to help them remember their journey from Seattle mid-carders to one of the biggest acts on the planet. He’s directed a documentary called, appropriately enough, “Pearl Jam Twenty,” that culls through more than 1,200 hours of rare footage — plus 24 hours of recently shot interviews — to provide a definitive look at the band’s legendary career. The film is reportedly set to premiere in September — though, on Monday, PBS announced it would broadcast it in October as part of its “American Masters” series — meaning that, at long last, guitarist Mike McCready, one of Pearl Jam’s founding members, is being forced to come to terms with his band’s own mortality. “Yeah, it all went very quickly,” he said, laughing. “There were many highs and lows throughout our career, and many arcs of creativity [and] tragedies … that run the whole gamut of human emotions, being in this. From being in a band with guys for 20 years, and having fights and making up, and being brothers in a way, looking out for each other.” And part of what appeals to McCready about Crowe’s film is that it somehow manages to tie all of those things together into one cohesive and comprehensive work — one that had even the longtime guitarist getting a bit nostalgic. “When I saw the early … edits of it, I thought it was very interesting and kind of exciting and, like I said, it runs the gamut of all those emotions,” he explained. “And it actually put in some sort of musical perspective the past 20 years, like, ‘Oh yeah, we did do that, we did do this’: the Ticketmaster thing , there was Roskilde , there were all these issues, and there were these great highs and interesting beginnings. The story it tells is: Why did it work, and why does it still? It made more sense when I saw the movie.” But “Twenty” isn’t the only thing Pearl Jam have in store for fans to commemorate the occasion: They’ve also announced plans for a Labor Day weekend concert alongside the likes of the Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age and Mudhoney, and, as McCready hinted, there might even be some new music on the way. Or maybe not. After all, all this nostalgia takes up a lot of time. “Jeff [Ament] and Ed [Vedder] were really wanting to do more music in the terms of, ‘It’s our 20th anniversary. Let’s celebrate that, but let’s also do some new music,’ and we’re all into that,” McCready said. “So, you may see some new music, you may not. I know we’re going to record some new music this year; it may not be finished by the end of the year.” Are you excited to see the Pearl Jam documentary? Tell us below! Related Artists Pearl Jam

Weezer Team Up With Ryan Adams For ‘Stirring’ New Song

‘He has a lot of wild and crazy energy,’ Rivers Cuomo says of collaborator. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images He may still be celebrating the U.S. soccer team’s heat-pounding 1-0 World Cup win over Algeria — a win he predicted , to be honest — but Weezer frontman and avowed soccer nut Rivers Cuomo isn’t about to let a little partying stand in the way of his day job. Because, though he’s gripped with World Cup fever, Cuomo is already hard at work on a whole new batch of Weezer songs — and it sounds like fans might be hearing some of the new stuff sooner rather than later. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to say here, so I’m going to keep my mouth shut,” Cuomo told MTV Radio. “But, uh, people are going to be hearing new Weezer very soon.” Cuomo wouldn’t say just when or where the new Weezer material would be made available — shoot, they just released “Represent,” the unofficial anthem for the U.S. men’s World Cup team, on Friday. But, in keeping with the collaborative spirit he harnessed for Weez’s 2009 album Raditude (which saw him work with the likes of Lil Wayne , the All-American Rejects and Dr. Luke), it sounds like he’s been teaming up once again, this time with slightly rumpled troubadour (and husband of Mandy Moore ) Ryan Adams . “I just wrote a song with Ryan Adams. Not Bryan, Ryan,” Cuomo laughed. “It’s a very stirring and emotional and powerful Weezer song. He was really inspiring to work with. … He has a lot of wild and crazy energy. It’s gonna be on the Weezer record. He plays lead guitar on it, but it will be on the Weezer record, for sure.” Are you looking forward to Weezer’s collaboration with Ryan Adams? Kings Of Leon Plan To Play Some ‘Beachy’ New Songs On Tour

‘It’ll be tough to not play the whole thing at Bonnaroo,’ drummer Nathan Followill says of upcoming album. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Nathan Followill of Kings Of Leon Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images The Kings of Leon may have ditched the sunny climes of Los Angeles (or their native Nashville) to work on the follow-up to their breakout album, Only by the Night, but that doesn’t mean the new album is shaping up to be a dour affair. Far from it, in fact. “[This is] the first time we’d ever recorded in New York City, and we thought we’d come out with a little more darker record, because we had done all our records either in Nashville or L.A., where it’s a little more chilled out, not as much hustle and bustle,” KOL drummer Nathan Followill told MTV Radio during a Bonnaroo conference call Tuesday. “And I’ll be damned if we didn’t go in there and make a fun record! It’s got songs that are beachy, it’s got songs that are a little more like our Youth and Young Manhood days. … We’re super excited.” Followill said the new album is nearly finished and that he and the rest of the Kings are now putting the finishing touches on it back in Nashville. There’s still no title or release date (or song titles: “We haven’t even named ’em all yet, to be honest”), but there’s a pretty good chance the band’s fans will get a sneak peek of some of the new material on KOL’s upcoming tour, which kicks off June 5 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and includes a headlining slot at the 2010 Bonnaroo festival , set for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee. “The record’s coming along great, man. It’ll be tough to not play the whole thing at Bonnaroo,” Followill laughed. “We’re going to try to be very selective of what we play, but there will definitely be some new tunes, for sure. … Anytime you’re coming into a tour after a new record, especially one that’s not even out yet, it’s pretty tough to not play the whole thing, so our set list at Bonnaroo, I think it’ll be a lot of oldies, a lot of goodies and probably a few more new ones than people are expecting for us.” Will you check out Kings of Leon’s upcoming tour? Phoenix Talk Soundtrack To New Sofia Coppola Film, ‘Somewhere’

‘This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,’ bassist Deck D’Arcy says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Phoenix Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Earlier this year, fresh off winning a Grammy for Best Alternative Album (and having an interesting exchange with “Jersey Shore” star Snooki on the red carpet, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars told BBC Radio that his band has written a “very minimal” soundtrack for his girlfriend Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film “Somewhere.” “It was more about trying to make a sound that fits with a Ferrari and the city of Los Angeles,” Mars told the BBC about the soundtrack. “It was more of an engineer work than a composer.” It sounded intriguing, so when MTV Radio caught up with Mars’ Phoenix bandmates, they asked about the “Somewhere” score — which, according to press release from Focus Features , stars Stephen Dorff as a “bad-boy actor” who gets an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter — they tried to pry some additional details out of ’em. Turns out, there’s going to be a whole lot more than Ferrari sounds on the soundtrack: The band’s song “Love Like a Sunset” also features heavily. “She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of ‘Love Like a Sunset,’ so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well,” Phoenix guitarist Christian Mazzalai said. “And then we wrote very small pieces of music, very minimal music for the movie too. … We’re very proud of it.” “This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,” bassist Deck D’Arcy added. “We’ve [been on] many soundtracks before, and it’s always weird for us — producers must like [our songs], of course it if they use them — but for us, it’s always weird to see them in the films.” Mazzalai and D’Arcy wouldn’t divulge more about the soundtrack (though they did say “Somewhere” would be in theaters “sometime in the fall,”) and while this isn’t the first time their music has been used by Coppola in a film — their “Too Young” was featured in her 2003 film “Lost in Translation” — this is the first time they’ve tried their hands at actually writing a score. And they admit it’s a process they’re still getting used to. “It was like in ‘Lost in Translation,’ when they used our song in a scene, it’s funny, but it’s weird for us,” Mazzalai laughed. “We didn’t believe it. So this is the first time we feel like the images match the music. But we still don’t believe it.” Related Artists Phoenix

The Fray Writing New Songs With Kanye West, Indie Hipsters In Mind
