Slash Promises New Velvet Revolver Will Be ‘A Lot Heavier’

‘When we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up,’ the guitarist says of former frontman Scott Weiland. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Other than taking a short break to play some riffs for Rihanna , top-hatted guitarist Slash spent the better part of last year working on his solo album, which many fans took as further proof that Velvet Revolver was no more. The supergroup — made up of Slash, fellow Guns N’ Roses alums Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland — produced a pair of well-received albums. Then Weiland went back to STP, leaving Velvet Revolver without a frontman. Still, despite the group having been mostly quiet for the last two years, Slash says they fully intend to push forward — and the group even has some songs ready to go. “As soon as we got off the road from the last tour and parted ways with Scott, we got together and wrote half a dozen really great, sort of heavy metal pieces of music,” Slash told MTV News. “It’s a lot heavier than what Velvet Revolver has put out, so I’m dying to put out the quintessential Velvet Revolver record.” Slash said the new material better matches the group’s original intentions. “When Duff and Matt and I first got together, we wrote a ton of material that never saw the light of day, and that was all very heavy,” Slash explained. “It’s definitely our natural way of doing things. But when we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up a lot, and we progressively got lighter. As much as I love the two records we did do, one of the things that was progressively more and more frustrating was the direction the band took.” Slash’s self-titled solo effort, released in April, features an eclectic mix of guest appearances, from Fergie to Iggy Pop to Kid Rock to former Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy , who’s currently fronting the guitarist’s touring band. And according to Slash, he wasn’t the only Velvet Revolver bandmember with more than one iron in the fire. “I’ve been doing this record, and there’s a tour and Duff’s been playing with Jane’s Addiction, so everybody has been pretty busy,” Slash said. “But at some point early next year, we’re going to reconvene and take a good serious look at everything that we’ve got.” In the meantime, Velvet Revolver remain a band without a singer — but not for lack of trying. “This next record will be us doing what we want to do without making any concessions to anybody,” Slash declared. “Which is why it’s taking so long to find a singer, because we want to find the guy who can front that band and not something we have to conform to.” Who should be the new Velvet Revolver singer? Slash Is ‘Flattered’ That Rihanna Channels Him In ‘Rockstar 101’

‘It brings an element of sexuality to it that I probably wouldn’t have been capable of,’ Gun N’ Roses axeman tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Rihanna can always be counted on to deliver killer hooks and sexy looks in the eye-popping videos that accompany her chart-owning singles. The just-premiered clip for “Rockstar 101,” off her smash ’09 album, Rated R, is no exception. The visual casts Rihanna as the frontwoman for a rock band whose members include Blink-182 drummer (and friend-of-everyone) Travis Barker. Perhaps the most striking image comes during the song’s breakdown, when Rihanna appears dressed as none other than iconic guitarist Slash. And it’s a fitting homage, as the former Guns N’ Roses axeman provided the track’s signature riffage. But the original concept didn’t have Rihanna putting on a gender-bending performance. “I was supposed to actually be in that video,” Slash told MTV News. “I played on the song, and they called me up to ask me to play in the video, but my record was just coming out, and I was sort of worn thin,” he explained. “She was really sweet. She sent me this pleading text to come do the video, but I couldn’t make it work. I told her that me not being in the video wasn’t going to make or break it.” So what does Slash think of Rihanna’s pantomime-like depiction of him in the clip? “The video is way better with her being me than with me being me,” he said. “All things considered, it brings an element of sexuality to it that I probably wouldn’t have been capable of. I think it’s hot, and I sent her a text this morning telling her it was definitely hotter with her doing it than with me doing it. Everything works out the way it’s supposed to.” Slash admitted that he hadn’t heard back from her yet, but their easy relationship is one of mutual admiration: Rihanna is a huge fan of Guns N’ Roses, the singer told him, and Slash was way into “Umbrella.” “I don’t come from that side of the fence, but I particularly liked [ Good Girl Gone Bad ],” he said. Although he couldn’t make the clip’s shoot, Slash told us he feels pretty good about the outcome. “I’m way more flattered that she played me in the video than her asking me to be in it,” he said. “All things considered, she’s pretty cool.” Did you think Rihanna’s “Rockstar” take on Slash was spot-on? Rihanna Channels Slash In ‘Rockstar 101’ Video

Travis Barker appears in latest clip from Rihanna’s Rated R LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna in her “Rockstar 101” video Photo: Def Jam Burning flames? Smashed guitars? Slash? Well, it’s not quite a Guns N’ Roses video, but Rihanna premiered her “Rockstar 101” clip Tuesday (May 25) in full-on rocker fashion, donning a top hat, shades, and holding an axe to complete her makeover into the legendary guitarist. The video is a mix of goth bondage-esque voyeurism, complete with Rihanna’s gyrating moves and a raging band that features Travis Barker on the drums. “Strut up in the club, posted in the back, feeling so good, looking so bad,” Rihanna sings. “Rocking this skirt, rocking this club, got my middle finger up, I don’t really give a f—.” “Rockstar 101,” featuring Slash, is the fourth single from Rihanna’s recent Rated R LP, following “Russian Roulette,” “Hard” and “Rude Boy.” The song was written and produced by The-Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart; the pair also oversaw “Hard,” which broke into the top 10 of Billboard ‘s Hot 100 singles chart. Although Slash is featured on the track as a performer, the GNR member doesn’t quite appear in the video — at least, not in the flesh. But Rihanna pays homage to him toward the end of the clip, comically sporting a skull-laden top hat, leather jacket, dark glasses and toothpick. Rihanna projects Slash’s swagger and plays the guitar in a way that would make most blush. Rihanna straddles the instrument in one shot and later suggestively points it up from her crotch, a la Prince. Last month, Rihanna performed “Rockstar 101” on “American Idol,” and in March Travis Barker raved about her burgeoning drumming and guitar skills. “She jams! Watch out for her,” Barker later tweeted.
