Mike Starr Remembered By Dr. Drew, Nikki Sixx, Steven Adler

‘Celebrity Rehab’ castmates Mackenzie Phillips and Lisa D’Amato also tweet about late ex-Alice in Chains bassist. By Ryan J. Downey Mike Starr in 1990 Photo: Steve Jennings/ Getty Images Mike Starr’s friends and fans have taken to Twitter to express their grief about the ex-Alice in Chains bassist’s death on Tuesday (March 8). “Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness,” tweeted Dr. Drew Pinsky , who treated Starr on VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab” and the spin-off show “Sober House.” “So very sad. Our prayers are with his family.” Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler — another founding member of a hard-rock powerhouse whose career was sidelined by drug addiction — also hit Twitter: “R.I.P. Mike Starr!! Such a sad day! 🙁 :(” Adler is also a “Celebrity Rehab” alum, though the two men appeared on separate seasons. Starr would have turned 45 next month. “Drugs and alcohol aren’t a joke,” tweeted Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum , who replaced Adler in GN’R. “Please take care of yourself and respect yourself. We lost Mike Starr today. Rest in Peace man.” Ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy , who filled in with Avenged Sevenfold after they lost Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan to an overdose, had this to say via Twitter: “RIP Mike Starr… I watched his struggle on Celebrity Rehab and had my fingers crossed for his recovery… this disease kills… sad stuff…” Starr was found dead in a Salt Lake City house on Tuesday. He played bass for Alice in Chains from their inception in the late ’80s until 1993, when he left the Seattle grunge stars while touring for their second album, Dirt. Alice in Chains have several songs dealing with addiction. “You can’t understand a user’s mind,” former singer Layne Staley sings on “Junkhead.” Staley died in 2002 after overdosing on a mixture of heroin and cocaine. Kanye West, Jay-Z Watch The Throne Pairing Treads New Ground

Album collaborations are rare in hip-hop history. By Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Now that their first single, “H.A.M.,” has debuted, it looks like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly anticipated Watch the Throne album is actually happening. West tweeted about the collaboration in August , and confirmed it a few months later, saying the project would now be a full album . But few would have guessed it would be released so soon — right on the heels of West’s critically lauded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — and there aren’t too many examples in music history of two superstars collaborating on an album. Click for photos of other great collaborations in music history. There have been plenty of rock “supergroups” who have released albums over the years, starting with the likes of Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash) in the 1960s and continuing to Velvet Revolver (Slash, Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and Audioslave (Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk). However, there isn’t as rich a history of duos and groups coming together in hip-hop. The Wu-Tang Clan and N.W.A are as influential as any groups in hip-hop, but their members’ reputations didn’t flourish until they embarked on their own. And they were originally groups to begin with. The Firm saw Nas join forces with AZ, Foxy Brown and Nature under the production of Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, but besides Nas, the group’s members are far from household names. More recently, Nas teamed up with Damian Marley to release Distant Relatives , but neither of these artists can touch the current popularity of West or Jay-Z. Barbara Streisand enlisted Barry Gibb to write an album for her during the height of the Bee Gees’ success in the late ’70s. In 1980, the pair produced Streisand’s Guilty , which went on to sell 20 million records and win a Grammy. While anyone would be hard-pressed to match that success, Jay-Z is no stranger to collaborative albums. He teamed up with R. Kelly to record Best of Both Worlds in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was arguably the most-popular rapper and R. Kelly was certainly the biggest R&B artist. The two had previously collaborated successfully on Kelly’s “Fiesta” remix and Jay-Z’s “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” so an album seemed like the ideal next step. By time the album would be released, however, R. Kelly was embroiled in very public trial. The pair would try again with Unfinished Business in 2004, but tensions eventually boiled over. Amid their respective controversies, both albums were certified platinum. Jay also collaborated with Linkin Park in 2004 to release Collision Course , which saw the group and Hov reworking and mashing up their previous recordings. Jay also unofficially collaborated with Danger Mouse on The Grey Album , a mash-up of Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ self-titled White Album . The Grey Album would go on to launch the career of Danger Mouse, who has since released albums with Cee-Lo Green under the name Gnarls Barkley and The Shins’ James Mercer as the band Broken Bells. West produced the majority of Common’s Be and Finding Forever albums, and he was rumored to be working with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco on a CRS (Child Rebel Soldier) album. Slash Promises New Velvet Revolver Will Be ‘A Lot Heavier’

‘When we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up,’ the guitarist says of former frontman Scott Weiland. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Other than taking a short break to play some riffs for Rihanna , top-hatted guitarist Slash spent the better part of last year working on his solo album, which many fans took as further proof that Velvet Revolver was no more. The supergroup — made up of Slash, fellow Guns N’ Roses alums Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland — produced a pair of well-received albums. Then Weiland went back to STP, leaving Velvet Revolver without a frontman. Still, despite the group having been mostly quiet for the last two years, Slash says they fully intend to push forward — and the group even has some songs ready to go. “As soon as we got off the road from the last tour and parted ways with Scott, we got together and wrote half a dozen really great, sort of heavy metal pieces of music,” Slash told MTV News. “It’s a lot heavier than what Velvet Revolver has put out, so I’m dying to put out the quintessential Velvet Revolver record.” Slash said the new material better matches the group’s original intentions. “When Duff and Matt and I first got together, we wrote a ton of material that never saw the light of day, and that was all very heavy,” Slash explained. “It’s definitely our natural way of doing things. But when we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up a lot, and we progressively got lighter. As much as I love the two records we did do, one of the things that was progressively more and more frustrating was the direction the band took.” Slash’s self-titled solo effort, released in April, features an eclectic mix of guest appearances, from Fergie to Iggy Pop to Kid Rock to former Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy , who’s currently fronting the guitarist’s touring band. And according to Slash, he wasn’t the only Velvet Revolver bandmember with more than one iron in the fire. “I’ve been doing this record, and there’s a tour and Duff’s been playing with Jane’s Addiction, so everybody has been pretty busy,” Slash said. “But at some point early next year, we’re going to reconvene and take a good serious look at everything that we’ve got.” In the meantime, Velvet Revolver remain a band without a singer — but not for lack of trying. “This next record will be us doing what we want to do without making any concessions to anybody,” Slash declared. “Which is why it’s taking so long to find a singer, because we want to find the guy who can front that band and not something we have to conform to.” Who should be the new Velvet Revolver singer? ‘I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman,’ Slash says of Myles Kennedy. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Considering how long he has been around and the sort of people he has hung out with and places he has been, you would think there wouldn’t be a whole lot that would throw off Slash. But when it came time to plan a tour in support of his recently released self-titled solo album, he was a little perplexed. After all, he couldn’t recruit all of the top-shelf talent who provided vocals on Slash (including Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Chris Cornell, Adam Levine and Dave Grohl). Luckily, he took a chance that paid off. “I auditioned a lot of singers for Velvet Revolver and a lot for this new tour,” Slash told MTV News of the jaunt, which kicks off Friday night (May 21) in Walker, Minnesota. “I had one song left on the album and didn’t have a singer for it, so I called Myles Kennedy out of the blue. He sent back this amazing vocal for a song called ‘Starlight.’ ” Kennedy, who was previously the singer for the Creed fallout band Alter Bridge, immediately clicked with the veteran guitarist. Naturally, that led to the birth of their touring together. “I don’t know if I coerced him into doing the tour or if he really wanted to do it, but he was onboard,” Slash joked. “I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman.” Though he stuck mostly to a bellowing baritone with Alter Bridge, Kennedy’s singing with Slash is “much bluesier,” according to the guitarist. That’s good, because he’ll have to tackle a wide variety of styles. “It’s a pretty killer set list,” said Slash, who has done time in a number of different bands, all of which will be represented on the tour. “We do five to six songs off the new record. And we do a handful of Guns N’ Roses songs, a lot of which I haven’t played since ’93. And we do a few Velvet Revolver songs and a couple of Snakepit songs. It’s a really energetic and vibrant set.” Will you check out Slash’s new tour? Let us know in the comments!
