Nas Chose Producers Who Were ‘Gonna Be There’ For Life Is Good

Salaam Remi, No I.D., Heavy D and Da Internz all worked with Esco on his upcoming LP. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nas Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Throughout his career, Nas has worked with some of the most celebrated hip-hop producers from Dr. Dre and DJ Premier to the Trackmasters and Swizz Beatz, but for his next LP, Life Is Good, Esco chose to keep the vibe more intimate. “I wanted to work on a record where it’s just not a lot of people,” Nas said when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday . “So it’s mostly No I.D., Saalam Remi, Da Internz; those are the ones who basically gave me the music. They knew what I wanted; they sat with me.” On 2001’s Stillmatic, Remi contributed the beat for “What Goes Around” and then came back the next year to give Esco two singles for his God’s Son LP (“Made You Look” and “I Can”). No I.D. and Nas have some history as well. In 2007, the Nasty one hopped on the No I.D.-produced cut “Success” off of Jay-Z’s American Gangster album, and late last year, Nas, Common and the Chicago producer collaborated on “Ghetto Dreams.” “I needed producers that’s gonna be there and get into what I want to get into, have the conversation and start making the records based off of what I’m looking for,” God’s Son said. Heavy D also lent a production hand prior to his death last year , making the beat for Life Is Good ‘s latest single, “The Don.” Nas didn’t find out that Heavy sent the music for him to use until after he died however. “I looked up to Heav,” he said. “He’s an icon, a music icon.” What are your expectations for Nas’ Life Is Good ? ‘Jersey Shore’ High Five: Snooki Hearts The Plumber

Plus: JWoww pees in public (again), Deena invents a new word and more moments from the latest episode. By Jim Cantiello Ronnie on Thursday’s “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV Snooki pranked the Situation, fell in love with Vinny and renamed his manhood — but check out the embedded video below for my five favorite moments from this week’s “Jersey Shore.” 5. Casper the ‘Roidy Ghost Sammi’s back in Seaside, and within seconds of talking to Ronnie, she unleashed one of the harshest insults you can say to a tanorexic juicehead: “You look pale.” I like the new-and-improved Sammi! 4. Hastatic The meatballs are thrilled with Sam’s return — so much so that it inspired Deena to create a new word: hastatic. “I, like, was so hastatic that I almost cried,” Deena said. “Hastatic is, you know, when you’re, like, super happy and like really ecstatic.” Hastatic? I’m sorry, Deena, that’s just redundant and stupid. Or restupid. Do I get to be on “Jersey Shore” now? 3. Plumber’s Here! The multi-episode “clogged toilet” plot line came to a close this week. Enter the plumbers! Plumber Mike: “How are you? I’m Mike, he’s Rich, we’re the plumbers.” Snooki: “Oh, hello, how are you?” Plumber Mike: “Good, how are you?” OK, how many porn scenes start that way? Snooki: “The plumbers are here, finally. The fat one is kinda cute. Like, I would definitely, like, hang out with that.” No! Snooki, I was kidding! Let the man clean your pipes and get out of there. And that’s not a euphemism! 2. JWoww Pees When JWoww relieved herself behind a car, Deena offered a napkin from her purse and got peed on. That’s the second time this season that JWoww peed in a public place. At least this time, it was outside. Baby steps — literally. Peeing wherever you want is a step a baby might take. 1. Don’t Vomit And now it’s time for my favorite game: Try Not to Puke While Watching “Jersey Shore”! Plumber Mike, unclogging toilet: “How long has it been like this?” Snooki: “For two weeks.” Plumber Mike: “I’m surprised you guys don’t have maggots in here yet.” Between that scene, the image of the crumpled-up clothing that was causing the toilet blockage, Snooki pranking the Situation by spreading cheese under his sheets and Ronnie snuggling up to Sammi at a club, this game is hard. Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Related Videos ‘Jersey Shore’ High Five Highlights

Nicki Minaj ‘Tried To Put A Cap On My Career,’ Lil’ Kim Says

Brooklyn femcee says real stars have no ‘time limit’ and clears up Black Friday shipping delays on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil’ Kim on RapFix Live Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Lil’ Kim started her career as an artist on Atlantic Records under the Notorious B.I.G.’s imprint, Undeas Records, before eventually going on to ink a deal after her 2006 prison release with the Trackmasters, though, she never released a project with the production outfit. Nowadays, Kim’s situation is far less complicated. According to Kim, she’s calling her own shots. “I’m independent,” she told host Sway during her appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” “I am a boss, other people work for a boss. I write checks, other people get checks. Everything you see me doing … it’s hard for a female, but I’m maneuvering with my own money and my own relationships.” Last month, Lil’ Kim released new music for the first time in years with the mixtape Black Friday, a conceptual collection that takes aim at her nemesis Nicki Minaj. The project was scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, however, fans were confused when they discovered the set was a for-purchase item and not a free download, as is typically the case with mixtapes. As of press time, fans who bought a copy of Black Friday are reporting that they have yet to receive the tape. Lil’ Kim and her manager , though, insisted on Thursday’s (March 3) live stream that CDs have now been shipped after the rapper took time to sign each unit. In the meantime, Kim seems to have no intention of giving up the spotlight. She voiced her displeasure with Nicki Minaj’s alleged insistence that the Lil Wayne prot

Cake Try For ‘Classy And Grandiose’ In Showroom Of Compassion

After a six-plus-year wait between albums, indie rockers didn’t feel obligated to ‘reinvent’ their sound. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea Photo: MTV News “It’s been a long time,” John McCrea sings on the second track of Cake ‘s new album, Showroom of Compassion, which dropped on Tuesday (January 11). For fans who have been waiting more than six years for a new release from the understated indie rockers, it sure has been. And what they’ll get after this long time is signature Cake , albeit with a few adjustments. “We’re not trying to change; we never have,” McCrea told MTV News. “I always thought that was so wasteful for musicians to feel so obligated to reinvent themselves every album. … That said, we do have reverb for the first time on my vocals. I think I had a moratorium against reverb all this time because I didn’t want to sound grandiose.” There’s also more piano, which McCrea said they avoided in the past “because we didn’t want to sound classy. Now we’re a little classier,” he deadpanned. “I think we’re doing what America wants us to do: being classy and grandiose. And rude, with the song ‘Sick of You.’ ” But none of this is news to the real die-hards, who have videotaped live performances of the new songs, studied the lyrics and are already singing along to every word at concerts. “It’s pretty great, especially if you go someplace like France, where the language is French and the album has only been out for a couple months, and everybody is singing the words in English,” said Vince DeFiore, who plays trumpet, keyboard and percussion. After spending years extricating themselves from a label deal, launching their own label and dealing with other issues that “musicians shouldn’t have to deal with in a normal situation,” Cake set about recording the album in an entirely solar-powered studio in Sacramento, California. The conversion turned out to be so efficient, they actually get a kickback from the city now. “As the value of recorded music descends to zero, we get a little check for $25,” McCrea said of their power-grid surplus. But a band whose songs are perennial favorites for use in ads (Apple, Snapple), TV shows (everything from “The Sopranos” to “Chuck”) and movies, shouldn’t have to worry about funds too much. Are there any Showroom songs they think are ripe for commercial use? ” ‘Easy to Crash’ — maybe that would be good for a car that has a really good safety record,” McCrea offered. “I might allow that. I’m pro safety.” Related Artists Cake

Kanye West, Jay-Z Watch The Throne Pairing Treads New Ground

Album collaborations are rare in hip-hop history. By Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Now that their first single, “H.A.M.,” has debuted, it looks like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly anticipated Watch the Throne album is actually happening. West tweeted about the collaboration in August , and confirmed it a few months later, saying the project would now be a full album . But few would have guessed it would be released so soon — right on the heels of West’s critically lauded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — and there aren’t too many examples in music history of two superstars collaborating on an album. Click for photos of other great collaborations in music history. There have been plenty of rock “supergroups” who have released albums over the years, starting with the likes of Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash) in the 1960s and continuing to Velvet Revolver (Slash, Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and Audioslave (Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk). However, there isn’t as rich a history of duos and groups coming together in hip-hop. The Wu-Tang Clan and N.W.A are as influential as any groups in hip-hop, but their members’ reputations didn’t flourish until they embarked on their own. And they were originally groups to begin with. The Firm saw Nas join forces with AZ, Foxy Brown and Nature under the production of Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, but besides Nas, the group’s members are far from household names. More recently, Nas teamed up with Damian Marley to release Distant Relatives , but neither of these artists can touch the current popularity of West or Jay-Z. Barbara Streisand enlisted Barry Gibb to write an album for her during the height of the Bee Gees’ success in the late ’70s. In 1980, the pair produced Streisand’s Guilty , which went on to sell 20 million records and win a Grammy. While anyone would be hard-pressed to match that success, Jay-Z is no stranger to collaborative albums. He teamed up with R. Kelly to record Best of Both Worlds in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was arguably the most-popular rapper and R. Kelly was certainly the biggest R&B artist. The two had previously collaborated successfully on Kelly’s “Fiesta” remix and Jay-Z’s “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” so an album seemed like the ideal next step. By time the album would be released, however, R. Kelly was embroiled in very public trial. The pair would try again with Unfinished Business in 2004, but tensions eventually boiled over. Amid their respective controversies, both albums were certified platinum. Jay also collaborated with Linkin Park in 2004 to release Collision Course , which saw the group and Hov reworking and mashing up their previous recordings. Jay also unofficially collaborated with Danger Mouse on The Grey Album , a mash-up of Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ self-titled White Album . The Grey Album would go on to launch the career of Danger Mouse, who has since released albums with Cee-Lo Green under the name Gnarls Barkley and The Shins’ James Mercer as the band Broken Bells. West produced the majority of Common’s Be and Finding Forever albums, and he was rumored to be working with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco on a CRS (Child Rebel Soldier) album.
