Rick Ross Talks ‘Great Relationship’ With Lil Wayne, Cash Money

‘It’s really like me being at home with my brothers when it comes to Birdman and Lil Wayne,’ Ross says. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Rick Ross Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Through the years, Rick Ross has developed a strong relationship with Cash Money and Lil Wayne. This year Ross toured with Wayne on the first leg of his I Am Still Music Tour, and he’s already kicked around the idea of a joint album with Birdman and appeared on his fair share of songs with the YMCMB roster. During this week’s “RapFix Live,” the Boss spoke to host Sway about his relationship with Wayne and his favorite memory from his I Am Still Music run. “The very first night the tour kicked off, just being backstage and me having a great relationship with Cash Money,” he revealed. “So it’s really like me being at home with my brothers when it comes to Birdman and Lil Wayne.” Rozay and Weezy currently appear together on DJ Khaled’s brand-new “I’m On One,” Ross’ “9 Piece (Remix)” and, of course, Wayne’s Tha Carter IV street single “John.” For “John,” Wayne found inspiration in “I’m Not a Star,” the opening track from Ross’ 2010 Teflon Don. “When [Wayne] first came home [from jail] he was like, ‘That ‘”I’m Not a Star,” that’s one of my favorite joints, let’s do something in that vibe,’ ” Ross recalled. “I’m like, ‘Easy.’ He actually gave me the track and I was like, ‘Wow, this is too easy.’ ” With Tha Carter IV scheduled to drop on June 21 and the Colin Tilley-directed “John” clip in rotation and video outlets, Ross is excited for the future. “Sitting in the studio at the Hit factory in Miami, I remember him just playing joints off his album and us constantly going back to that joint and I was just like, ‘It’s gonna be a hot summer.’ ” What’s your favorite Ross and Weezy track? Lloyd Banks’ ‘So Forgetful’ Video Inspired By ‘Hangover’

Ryan Leslie says G-Unit rapper’s song is based on ‘personal experience.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Ade Mangum Lloyd Banks Photo: MTV News G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks wants to bring listeners into the world of a rap star with his new video for “So Forgetful.” MTV News caught up with the Queens MC on the set of the visual for the Ryan Leslie-produced track from his third album, H.F.M. 2 (Hunger for More 2) , which was released late last year on G-Unit Records. “The way we put the record together was kind of how the video is playing out,” Banks said about the song’s inception. “I stopped by the studio, [Leslie] was working on a few sounds, and he plays everything, from the drums to the keys. So, he basically started, and I just started writing the verses, and it came to life.” Leslie, a multitalented R&B artist, does double duty on “So Forgetful,” producing the synth-heavy track and singing its hook. Leslie believes Banks’ genuine perspective on the song — he raps about bagging models and forgetting how they met — makes it one of the album’s better tracks. “What’s awesome about this record is that it’s a real personal experience,” Leslie said. “Brothers be on the road all the time, and we go to different cities, and it’s hard to keep track of all the cities and everyone that we meet. Real rap is the best rap. The fact that he was drawing from personal experience to put this record together, I think that’s what makes it … a super strong one.” Banks added that the song’s groove, and a certain Zach Galifianakis-starring movie, played an integral part in its creation too. “I believe in that when you building an album, every song should have a different mood,” he said. “When I heard the certain notes that was played, it just brought me into the nightlife. It sound like something that I could enjoy, the fellas can enjoy as well as the ladies. “Actually, I thought [of] the concept of movie [‘The] Hangover.’ I thought that was pretty dope how they had went away for the weekend and so many things happen and that was kind of like the metaphor. I was bringing them into the life of a rap star or an R&B star — what it would be like. Sometimes, you literally wake up and forgot how you got there.” Are you excited to see the “So Forgetful” video? Tell us below! Related Artists Lloyd Banks Ryan Leslie

Wiz Khalifa Calls ‘Black And Yellow’ Remixes ‘A Big Honor’

During ‘RapFix Live,’ MC says versions by Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg ‘made the song even bigger.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa on “RapFix Live” Photo: Sohyung Kang / MTV News Wiz Khalifa might have been bummed that Lil Wayne didn’t mention the rapper by name when he was interviewed about his “Black and Yellow” remix, but during Wednesday’s (March 30) “RapFix Live,” the Pittsburgh MC called Weezy’s version — along with remixes by Snoop Dogg and others — a “big honor.” “I know when you’re an artist and you got songs on the radio, you figure that people hear it, but to know that someone heard it, went and got the beat and flowed to it,” Wiz told MTV News’ Sway. “I know that process. It was definitely a big honor. Snoop did ‘Purp and Yellow’ — that was big and it turned it from the Steelers [anthem] to the Lakers and made the song even bigger. That worked for me too.” During the mtvU Woodies, Wiz downplayed the situation between him and Wayne. “I feel like people have a chance to speak out and acknowledge younger people or people who are grinding and coming up in the game, and they don’t always take the opportunity,” he said. “That’s all that was. “There’s plenty of people who’ve missed that opportunity, there’s plenty of people who went back and taken that opportunity when they missed it,” Wiz added. “It’s never too late. It wasn’t anything negative; it just is what it is. That’s the type of person I am. I’m a realistic person, so I tend to say realistic things.” Sill, Wiz said he was open to working with Weezy. “Everything has to be organic and natural. I’m not gonna do anything with anybody that I don’t sit down with and share points of view and chop it up,” Wiz said. “That’s really important to me.” Which “Black and Yellow” version is your favorite? Pusha T Promises Next Clipse LP Is ‘Gonna Be Mean’

On ‘RapFix Live,’ G.O.O.D. Music signee says duo are making street music: ‘We’re doing the album that we wanna do.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Pusha T Photo: Sohyung Kang/MTV News Now that the Clipse’s Pusha T is a part of the G.O.O.D. Music family as a solo artist, the pressure to deliver as a group appears to have subsided. The Virginia Beach MC and his brother Malice have long railed against record labels for freedom when it comes to their Clipse projects, blaming execs for stalling on release dates and handcuffing them creatively. But for the next Brothers Thornton LP, Pusha said the duo’s music will be as dark and uncompromising as ever. “I can say that it’s gonna strictly be for the Clipse purist,” Push told Sway during an appearance on “RapFix Live” on Thursday (November 18). We’re throwing around a title. But it’s gonna be mean, for sure. We’re doing the album that we wanna do.” Their last album, Til the Casket Drops, was released last year to much critical acclaim in the same vein as their past efforts. The Neptunes prot

Swizz Beatz Makes ‘Triumphant’ Music With 50 Cent

‘He’s working on some amazing material,’ Swizzy says on MTV’s ‘RapFix Live.’Mawuse Ziegbe By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Super-producer Swizz Beatz has been keeping super busy in the studio these days. Swizzy has jumped on Kanye West’s all-star “Power” remix and has been updating his Twitter followers about his recent late-night sessions with everyone from N.E.R.D. to Mary J. Blige . During his Thursday (August 26) interview on “RapFix Live,” the rapper/producer revealed that he’s also been in the lab with 50 Cent. “I met up with him earlier in the day,” Swizz explained about slotting studio time with Fif, Mary and Busta Rhymes on Wednesday. “He’s working on some amazing material that we’re possibly collaborating on.” For the most part, Swizz kept the details of his collabo with 50 on the low: “I don’t want to talk too soon or too early, but it’s crazy.” 50 has been going back and forth about the direction of his next album after reportedly scrapping plans to work in some dance rhythms on his Black Magic LP. Swizzy, who hit the studio with 50 to craft material for the Queens MC’s 2007 album Curtis, said the only advice he has for Fif is to maintain a winner’s attitude. “Triumphant. That’s it. Everything just would have to be triumphant,” Swizzy advised. But the producer said he’s encouraging all the stars he works with, including the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, to unleash a crazy amount of swagger in the booth. “That’s my approach on every artist I’m working with right now. Even with Mary, you’re gonna be able to hear this week, probably Friday, her sound that’s triumphant,” Swizz said. “For me to have that blueprint and to want to be able to share it with everybody that’s of talent, it’s like, ‘Wow, this is what I get to do for work?’ It’s fun.” What do you think an upcoming Swizz Beatz and 50 Cent collabo would sound like? Swizz Beatz Met With Kanye West, Pharrell For ‘Down-To-Earth Conversation’

On ‘RapFix Live,’ Swizz recounted the epic meeting of the super-producer minds. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Swizz Beatz Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News It was a picture worth a thousand tweets: multi-platinum producers Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Swizz Beatz all working together in one studio. The image was snapped by Clinton Sparks and posted on his Twitter earlier this month. During MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Thursday (August 26), Swizz explained that the trio were booked in the same studio — Swizz to work with N.E.R.D., and Kanye to work on Swizzy’s forthcoming solo effort . By the end of the night, though, they all converged and had a “real down-to-earth conversation; I think hip-hop needs more of that,” Swizz recalled. “It’s really confidential, I’m not even gonna front,” Swizz said about what went down that night. “I don’t want to be the person to let all the news out. I got to save some stories in case ‘Ye or P wanna elaborate on that. But just know that it was epic, and it was amazing to see such forces in the room, humbled but honest at the same time, comparing notes, comparing music.” The Ruff Ryders alum said the three producers are very “serious” when they discuss and critique each other’s work. But the respect level is so high that no one takes the suggestions personally, Swizz said. And he hopes that the “positive, competitive energy” they have together results in the best possible music. “If someone is saying ‘no’ to something or ‘It’s not right,’ the reason why is gonna come, and then the debate,” Swizz said of the process. “And you make the decision after that.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Swizz Beatz Related Artists Swizz Beatz Pharrell Williams Kanye West

Soulja Boy Tell’em Calls Justin Bieber’s YouTube Game ‘Crazy’

‘For him to be younger than me and have that amount of people tune in to him,’ he says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Does Soulja Boy Tell’em have to watch his back online? Justin Bieber has taken SB’s digital playbook (YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and used it to catapult him to success. But when the two Twitter rivals — SB has more than 2 million followers to Bieber’s gang of more than 4 million — connected to shoot a Nickelodeon movie earlier this year they discovered they were actually fans of each other’s work. “He told me how he liked my songs and stuff like that,” Soulja Boy revealed during “RapFix Live” on Thursday (August 19). “And I was really going off the stuff I saw on YouTube,” he told host Sway of the Biebs. “His YouTube views was up there, and for me coming off of YouTube, that’s crazy … for him to be younger than me and have that amount of people tune in to him.” But while SB didn’t make any plans, at least on-air, to collaborate with Bieber, he did accept an offer to record together from last week’s “RapFix Live” guest, Lloyd Banks. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old rapper is putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming album, The DeAndre Way, which is set for a fall release. His tentative next single is the Boi-1da-helmed “Speakers Going Hammer.” “Basically, it’s all about the sound of the music,” SB told MTV News last month about the track. “I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars — another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it’s another hit.
