The-Dream Urges Pusha T To Make Great Records, Not Dis Records

‘The only way that we can respond is make great records,’ Dream tells MTV News of Pusha/ Lil Wayne beef. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina The-Dream Photo: The-Dream just wants to kill the competition — with his success. When asked if Team Pusha T would indulge in a rap beef and aim a dis record at Lil Wayne, he downplayed the importance of a response record and stressed the need for a good record. “The only way that we can respond is make great records, and nobody is gonna beat me at that,” The-Dream told MTV News when we caught up with him in Hollywood last week. The-Dream helped Pusha put together his latest single “Exodus 23:1,” the Notorious B.I.G.-inspired track that many believe is aimed at Lil Wayne. Weezy himself took offense and on May 25, just days after Push’s track hit the Net, released “Ghoulish” in response. “F— Pusha T and everybody that love ’em,” Tunechi rapped at the top of the Swizz Beatz-produced record. The-Dream, who has been working with Pusha on his upcoming solo album, said that “Exodus 23:1” wasn’t meant to be a YMCMB dis. “I had actually no idea that anybody would jump out the window [thinking] that personally … it was about them,” he said. “It kinda took me and the clique by surprise.” On the track, the Clipse rapper spits, “You signed to one n—a, that’s signed to another n—a, that’s signed to three n—as — now that’s bad luck.” Many fans thought those lyrics were targeted at Wayne, Drake and their YMCMB squad. Not the case, The-Dream said. The singer/songwriter told us he isn’t down with subliminal disses, remembering a lesson that his grandfather once taught him: ” ‘If you’re talking to somebody, you speak to them or you just walk up to them and slap them.’ I think beef is so ’96. It’s like, what’s the point? “I don’t think anybody is actually that good enough to direct anything at anyone,” he continued. “You can’t take that much time, there’s too much money in the words that either one of us have — me or Pusha — to direct directly at anyone.” Related Artists The-Dream Pusha T

Future And Pusha T’s Pluto Tour ‘A Mix Of Everything’

Pusha tells MTV News his tourmate Future is ‘in the underbelly of the street and the ‘hood, with a following.’ By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Pusha T Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ WireImage Pusha T is gearing up to drop his debut solo album later this year, but the G.O.O.D. Music signee will head out on tour with Atlanta rapper Future before that rolls around. Pusha embarks on the Pluto Tour beginning May 29, and he’s looking forward to it. “To me, it’s gonna be reminiscent of when I went out on my first album-promo tour,” Pusha told MTV News while taking a break from recording his album in Atlanta this past weekend. “I’m going out with Future, and right now, he’s in the underbelly of the street and the ‘hood, with a following. “It’s grown to the point where we can do House of Blues shows all across the country,” he added. “So, it’s gonna be a mix of everything in the show.” Pusha, who released four albums with his brother Malice as part of the Clipse , is looking forward to dropping his first solo project, and is still surprised that the opportunity has already arrived. “It was something that was in the plans once we went through the label drams,” he said, referencing the Clipse’s very public falling out with Jive Records. “But at the end of the day, I never thought it would just be myself.” Malice, who took a break from recording music to publish his memoir “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind and Naked,” has no plans to drop an album soon. “We went through the drama, did the Re-Up Gang mixtape series, and from that point, we were like, ‘Man, we really need to expand the brand as much as possible,’ ” Pusha explained. “That means I’ve gotta do a solo project, [Malice] is gonna do one — it was always about expanding the brand, but I didn’t know it would happen so quickly.” Upcoming dates for the Pluto Tour, featuring Future and Pusha T:

Pusha T Set To Drop Fear of God 2 In June

Along with an EP follow-up to his new mixtape, Push promises MTV News more Re-Up Gang offerings. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Pusha T Photo: MTV News Pusha T is getting over any trepidation he had before the release of his Fear of God mixtape . On June 21, the younger member of heralded Virginia rap duo the Clipse will release Fear of God 2: Let Us Pray, an EP version of his tape. The eight-track EP is set to feature bonus material, surprise guests and is being released in a partnership between G.O.O.D. Music and Re-Up Gang via Decon Records. Push A Ton first announced the news on Monday via Twitter as he dropped the video for the Hitboy-produced “My God.” Fear of God is Pusha T’s first solo venture and he told MTV News about the set’s objectives before its release. “I came up with the title because that’s what I intend to evoke out of the competition, lyrically, the fear of God,” Pusha told us. “At the same time, when I started the mixtape and realized that my brother wasn’t there with me the whole way, I sort of felt the fear of God myself.” Malice, the other side of the Clipse equation, is not part of the G.O.O.D. Music roster but has been busy promoting his just-published book, “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind and Naked.” However, Pusha confirmed that a new Clipse album will be forthcoming, but only after his solo offerings have dropped as well as a new Re-Up Gang mixtape titled Long Live the Cane. The time was just right for a Pusha solo project. “I think everything is about timing,” Pusha said. “We’ve always been trying to stay true to what the Clipse wanted, then we also had the Re-Up Gang projects that we always been working on as far as the mixtapes and the streets and Ab-Liva. I just think it’s time now.” Clipse and Re-Up Gang fans need not worry about Pusha softening up his style now that he’s asserting himself as a soloist and in league with Kanye West and company. “G.O.O.D. Music and Kanye in particular, he definitely wants me to be me and that’s what I bring to the G.O.O.D. Music fold,” Pusha said. “Everybody on G.O.O.D Music has their own specific lane and mine is definitely going to be street hip-hop to the core.” Pusha has already started preparing his proper solo debut album, due sometime in the fall. “We got five joints, Kanye West-produced, amazing, amazing records,” Pusha said. “Only thing we don’t have is the title yet.” What do you think of Pusha’s Fear of God mixtape?
