Star Wars Episode IX Title, Teaser Trailer Revealed!

It's really happening!! Star Wars Celebration introduced fans to the cast, both new and old, of Star Wars Episode IX , which premieres this December. Then the lights dimmed, and the world saw a teaser trailer — and learned the very exciting title of the newest installment in the Star Wars saga. PLEASE take note: this post contains spoilers for the teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode IX . The teaser opens with darkness and heavy breaths. It's Rey, standing in a desert while wearing white and visibly steeling herself. Echoes of Luke Skywalker's voice can be heard. “We've passed on all we know,” Luke says, while the camera pans to Rey's lightsaber — one that she must have built herself. “A thousand generations live in you, now,” Luke's voiceover says as Rey draws her weapon. In the distance on the planet, the distinctive buzz of TIE fighter type vehicles can be heard. “But this is your fight,” Luke's voice says with encouragement as Rey braces for what is coming. As the First Order vehicle races along the sand-covered terrain towards Rey, she runs, only to do a massive backflip. She ignites her lightsaber's blue (that's significant!) blade, and flips through the air. It's clear that the First Order pilot is in for a rude awakening. Viewers are then treated to a series of shots of planet surfaces, ships, and familiar faces. Notably, Kylo Ren, his faulty red lightsaber in hand, subdues an unknown opponent who appears to be wielding a crude melee weapon. In the background, a First Order trooper appears to be participating in the fight. We also see a repaired and modified version of Kylo's infamous mask, now laced with red. He does not appear to be wearing it during any of the trailer's scenes, however. Lando Calrissian makes his cinematic return, piloting the Millennium Falcon. Most emotionally evocative of all, we see scenes of General Leia Organa, portrayed by the late, great Carrie Fisher. As promised, these are not motion capture scenes, but made from unused footage from the first two films. Watching these powerful scenes in theaters is going to exact an emotional toll upon us all. “We will always be with you,” Luke's voice promises. Then, as Rey and her companions — including Finn and Poe — look out upon what may be the remains of the second Death Star, Luke makes another promise. “No one is ever really gone,” he assures Rey, acknowledging that those closely connected to the Force can endure beyond physical death. This is when the most surprising moment of the teaser occurs. Viewers hear wonderful, terrible laughter — distinctively belonging to the best character in all of Star Wars canon: Palpatine. Finally, the trailer reveals the film's title: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker . At Star Wars Celebration, after the lights came back on, the audience exclaimed with joy — because there was a new actor on stage. That actor was Ian McDiarmind — who plays Emperor Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious. (Everyone has their preferences, but he plays one of the most iconic and best-conceived characters in all of fiction) Plenty of people's eyes (mine included) teared up with joy at this stunning surprise. Obviously, fans have so many questions. Who is the “Skywalker” mentioned in the title? Is Kylo Ren going to foresake the Dark Side and claim his birthright as a descendant of Anakin? Or is Rey secretly, somehow descended from the Skywalker lineage, despite what appeared to be clear denials. And speaking of Rey, where did she find the kyber crystal that powers her new lightsaber? How much time has passed in the story since the end of the controversial The Last Jedi ? What role will Palpatine play in the film? Will his return, engineered through technology or perhaps Sith sorcery, make him the final villain? For that … we'll have to wait for the premiere this December.

Rogue One: Star Wars Film Prompts Neo-Nazi Boycott

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is almost unquestionably the most highly-anticipated film of 2016. And, of course, as with any major Star Wars release, the film became the subject of intense online scrutiny months before its release, thus generating word-of-mouth that usually serves as free advertising for Disney. Now, however, a week before it hits theaters, Rogue One is at the center of a heated debate that could wind up hurting its box office receipts for the most bizarre reason imaginable. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer Released! Watch Now! Past Star Wars controversies have centered around mixed responses to story developments within the franchise, or retroactive changes to the original films. Sadly, the Rogue One debate has taken a much more sinister tone that says more about our nation’s current political climate than about George Lucas’ film franchise. On Thursday, the hashtag #DumpStarWars began trending on Twitter, and it quickly became clear to any fan who investigated that this was not the result of some spirited critiques of the series’ creative shortcomings. While it’s unclear how it originated, the hashtag has proven popular among white nationalists and members of the “alt-right,” both movements that have been tied to the KKK and other hate groups. The most common complaint is that the film (which the outraged have not yet seen) is “anti-white” and espouses a “feminist agenda,” because the cast is multi-cultural and the film’s main character is a woman. The baffling outrage began back when the first Rogue One trailer was released online several months ago, with YouTube commenters describing the film as “nothing but a Jew masturbation fantasy of anti-White hate.” The bigoted movement gained steam back in November, when two of the film’s screenwriters, Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta, pointed out that the Empire has always been an obvious metaphor for Hitler’s regime. “Please note that the Empire is a white supremacist (human) organization,” Chris Weitz tweeted. Whitta retweeted the statement, adding: “Opposed by a multi-cultural group led by brave women.” Indeed, fantasy and science-fiction films and literature have a long history of advancing (usually left-wing) political causes, but don’t tell that to the chronically butthurt boycotters who are currently stamping their tiny feet and holding their breath til they turn blue all over social media. Some lowlights (complete with newly-trendy #FakeNews): “Stop using your multiculturalism anti-American agenda in a science fiction Disney movie. We just want to enjoy a fun movie.” “Just got a full refund on my Rogue One tickets. Keep your politics out of my galaxy.” “Star Wars writers rewrote and reshot Rogue One to add in Anti Trump scenes calling him a racist. Disgusting.” “Rogue One is an anti-Trump propaganda film. BOYCOTT!!! Trump supporters!” “#DumpStarWars Race baiting will not be tolerated.” On the sane side, the situation might be best summed up by David Slack, who tweeted: “If Star Wars — an obvious allegory about Nazism  — feels like an attack on your candidate, the problem isn’t with Star Wars…” Of course, our favorite #DumpStarWars tweet belongs to the incomparable Patirck Monahan, who writes: “After the election they changed the title of ROGUE ONE to DONALD TRUMP HAS A TINY WIENER? I’ll be spending my money elsewhere!” On point as always, @PattyMo. As for the anticipated impacted on the film’s bottom line – something tells us Disney will be just fine.

Jason Wingreen Dies; Voice of Boba Fett in Star Wars Was 95

Jason Wingreen – the Brooklyn-born actor best known as the voice of Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back – has passed away at the age of 95. Though he appeared in over 40 films and television series during his nearly five decades in the industry, Wingreen’s greatest legacy will always be his unforgettable role as one of the most iconic bad guys in the Star Wars universe. In addition to voicing the most badass bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away, Wingreen played the recurring character Harry the Bartender on the classic sitcom All in the Family . He also appeared in such television classics as The Twilight Zone , Matlock , Star Trek and Seinfeld . Interestingly, Wingreen was chosen by producers to voice Boba Fett after he unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of Yoda. It was not publicly known that Wingreen voiced Boba until 2000.  Wingreen says he enjoyed a  “quiet, peaceful, unencumbered life” in the decades before he was outed as one of the franchise’s most beloved figures. After the news of his role became public knowledge, the veteran actor lived his final years as a sought-after cult figure. Wingreen says the response from fans was immediate and “the letters just never stopped.” Sources close to Wingreen say he passed away quietly at his home in Los Angeles on Christmas Day.  View Slideshow: Celebrities We Lost in 2015

Kim Kardashian: Star Wars Brought Me & Kanye West Together!

As you may have have heard, Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters this week, and it’s expected to do bring in a buck or two for Disney, J.J. Abrams and company. Never one to let a trend go un-exploited Kim Kardashian thought it would be a good time to remind the world of how the Force brought her and her husband together: Long before Kim and Kanye West got married and brought two oddly-names little tykes into the world they were a couple of up-and-comers who ran in the same social circle. In 2008, when Kanye still had a sense of humor, he and rapper Rhymefest pitched a sketch comedy show called Alligator Boots to MTV. The series was never picked up, but the pilot gave us the glory of Kim in a Princess Leia costume and Kanye dressed as a stormtrooper. “In honor of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ being released today, I wanted to share these old pics of Kanye and me from years ago!” Kim wrote on her website today. “We worked together on a pilot for a show called ‘Alligator Boots’ back in 2008 and I played Princess Leia. “We had met before this project (back in 2003), but I would say this is when we first really connected. These pics are SO funny!” We don’t know about SO funny, but they’re pretty amusing. Khloe as Chewbacca and Kris as Darth Vader definitely would’ve taken things to the next level.
