A legendary filmmaker and an actress on the rise visit Josh Horowitz for this week’s episode of “Happy Sad Confused.” In the ’80s and ’90s, Paul Verhoeven’s name was synonymous with Hollywood spectacle and, at times, controversy. He directed a trio of acclaimed sci-fi films, RoboCop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers. But he also pushed… Read more »

Kansas State University makes no apologies for its 34-0 victory over South Dakota to open the 2015 football season. But Kansas State University is very sorry for what took place during halftime of that dominating win. The school's band attempted to combine scenes from Star Trek and Star Wars for its performance on Saturday, with the members forming rival University of Kansas' mascot (a Jayhawk) and what was meant to be the starship Starship Enterprise crashing into it. Except… well… watch this video. That Enterprise totally resembles a penis, something pretty much everyone on Twitter pointed out. The Marching Band Director took to Facebook in order to illustrate the band's intention and wrote along with a blueprint of the routine: “The chart below represents the drill from tonight’s show. There was absolutely no intent to display anything other than the Enterprise and the Jayhawk in battle. If I am guilty of anything it would be the inability to teach the drill in a manner that these young people could have succeeded.” “I do apologize for the misinterpretation and I assure you that I meant absolutely no disrespect or malice toward the University of Kansas.”

Gabe Saporta and Co. prove to MTV News that they bring the party. By Rya Backer Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta and Alex Suarez Photo: MTV News An interview with Cobra Starship ought to come with a warning: Once the cameras start recording, throw away anything you’d previously prepared, because Gabe Saporta and Co. are card-carrying hams. Anyone who’s familiar with members Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez’s takes as “Dick Bagwell” and “Vincent Twice (Vincent Twice),” respectively, in our Musical March Madness videos of years past knows how invested they can become in adopted personages (to say nothing of Blackinton’s other alias, Guy Ripley), but I was just as happy to learn that their authentic selves were just as animated. Between us: Now that I’ve gotten a bit of distance from the situation, I can also admit that as a female who grew up in early aughts Manhattan, I was pretty excited to go out on a (albeit, synthesized reality) date with the lead singer of my beloved Midtown — the band which upon its demise was how Cobra Starship was born. “I needed a band and … you were like the first people I asked,” Saporta said, regarding his reaching out to Suarez and Blackinton, who were once in a band together called This is Ivy League. Suarez added, “Gabe was like, ‘Hey, look, I’m starting this new band. You guys should come and be a part of it. I would love to have you guys. I don’t know what’s going to happen.” Not willing to let go of the good thing his band with Blackinton amounted to, “[Suarez] said no at first,” Saporta solemnly remembered about his first shot at getting a new band together. Eventually, the pair obviously came around, and alongside Victoria Asher and Nate Novarro, Starship have become a pop-rock behemoth, known for big choruses and dance floor-ready tracks. So, it only made sense to take Suarez and Saporta to the Village Party Store on our First Date. Surely, the makers of party music would feel at home at the party store, right? My suspicions were confirmed. And between learning how to host a “gritty” party to being branded with a Cobra temporary tattoo down my right forearm, it’s safe to say that the group brings the party wherever they go. Director Michael Bay explains threequel’s many references to ‘Trek,’ including Leonard Nimoy’s voice work. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bumblebee in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Sometimes Easter Eggs in movies — an intentional in-joke, reference or hidden message — are hard to spot, very blink-and-you-miss-it, and thus require repeat viewings to pick up on. Not so with “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” however. Even the most casual filmgoer should pick up on at least one of the many “Star Trek” references in the film. When MTV News caught up with director Michael Bay, we asked him to address the “Trek” connections, beginning with his enlistment of beloved actor Leonard Nimoy, a.k.a. Spock, to voice the role of Sentinel Prime. “He’s actually related to me. He married Susan Bay [the director’s cousin],” Bay said. “I was scared to ask him to voice. I saw him at Thanksgiving, and my mom was like, ‘Ask him! Ask him!’ I’m like, ‘No, Mom, no!’ ” As difficult as it is to imagine Bay being afraid of anything, he eventually got over his Nimoy anxiety. Bonus factoid for the non-Transformer geeks: Nimoy also lent his vocal talents to the 1986 animated film, as the voice of Galvatron. Speaking to other “Trek” references, Bay said he didn’t have anything to do with them; they all came from the film’s screenwriter. “That was my writer, Ehren Kruger,” Bay said. “[He] is a ‘Star Trek’ geek, so that wasn’t my thing.” So how many references did you count? Here are the three we spotted ( minor spoilers ahead ): 1. When Sam (Shia LaBeouf) meets girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) at work and is introduced to her boss, Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey), he marvels at their workplace: “It’s a beautiful building you guys have. Like the Starship Enterprise in here.” 2. Refugee robots Brains and Wheelie, who are hiding out in Carly and Sam’s apartment, watch an episode of “Trek,” during which one of them says, “Hey, I like this episode. It’s the one where Spock turns evil” — which also provides for a nice bit of tongue-in-cheek foreshadowing. 3. At one point, Sentinel Prime defends certain motivations with a fun little reverse quote of Spock’s wise words to Captain Kirk in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” “Dark of the Moon” quote: “The needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many.” Original: “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” What did we miss? Filed under: Videos , Music When Starship ‘s smash hit ‘ We Built This City ‘ came out in 1985, the traffic report and DJ banter heard during the bridge of the song were edited out, encouraging local radio stations to insert their own customized content into the song itself. And you thought ‘ Empire State of Mind ‘ was innovative. Starship was doing user generated content before you were born. Fast forward 25 years. Sioux City radio personalities, firefighters and hometown folks have come together to create a shakily edited lipdub that oozes low-budget dorky whiteness. Share Continue reading
