Cobra Starship Ham It Up On First Date

Gabe Saporta and Co. prove to MTV News that they bring the party. By Rya Backer Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta and Alex Suarez Photo: MTV News An interview with Cobra Starship ought to come with a warning: Once the cameras start recording, throw away anything you’d previously prepared, because Gabe Saporta and Co. are card-carrying hams. Anyone who’s familiar with members Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez’s takes as “Dick Bagwell” and “Vincent Twice (Vincent Twice),” respectively, in our Musical March Madness videos of years past knows how invested they can become in adopted personages (to say nothing of Blackinton’s other alias, Guy Ripley), but I was just as happy to learn that their authentic selves were just as animated. Between us: Now that I’ve gotten a bit of distance from the situation, I can also admit that as a female who grew up in early aughts Manhattan, I was pretty excited to go out on a (albeit, synthesized reality) date with the lead singer of my beloved Midtown — the band which upon its demise was how Cobra Starship was born. “I needed a band and … you were like the first people I asked,” Saporta said, regarding his reaching out to Suarez and Blackinton, who were once in a band together called This is Ivy League. Suarez added, “Gabe was like, ‘Hey, look, I’m starting this new band. You guys should come and be a part of it. I would love to have you guys. I don’t know what’s going to happen.” Not willing to let go of the good thing his band with Blackinton amounted to, “[Suarez] said no at first,” Saporta solemnly remembered about his first shot at getting a new band together. Eventually, the pair obviously came around, and alongside Victoria Asher and Nate Novarro, Starship have become a pop-rock behemoth, known for big choruses and dance floor-ready tracks. So, it only made sense to take Suarez and Saporta to the Village Party Store on our First Date. Surely, the makers of party music would feel at home at the party store, right? My suspicions were confirmed. And between learning how to host a “gritty” party to being branded with a Cobra temporary tattoo down my right forearm, it’s safe to say that the group brings the party wherever they go. My name is Alexandra. Not only was it April 13th, it was…

My name is Alexandra. Not only was it April 13th , it was officially the best day of my life. Friday the 13th was not so unlucky for me at all! I found out that Justin was going to be visiting a school and I immediately begged my parents to take me. My mom agreed because she knows I have been obsessed with him for over 4 years. I missed school that day and waited for him to come for 3 hours. I was with my mom, my grandma, my best friend and my little sister. There were many cars that we thought were Justin but they were just decoys. One of the trucks was Kenny Hamilton. I could not believe that I saw Kenny and he rolled down his window to say hi. Everyone started to say how Justin was hiding in Kenny’s truck and how he didn’t want to see his fans. I immediately knew this wasn’t how Justin would behave, he loves his fans. Finally at 1:20pm, a tan GMC truck slowly made it’s way into the main entrance of the school. The truck slowly rolled down the windows and Justin said hi to his fans . At first there was an extreme pause because all of us were so caught up in the moment. We finally all realized and the screaming began. Justin asked if anyone wanted an autograph and I quickly threw my Justin Bieber notepad in the car and Pattie handed it to Justin. He signed it and smiled. While this was happening, he was holding on to my wrist . I realized that Selena was next to Pattie in the car and Scooter was in the back. There are no other words to describe Justin then absolutely flawless. There were many news cast and I got on the news many times for being the girl who was absolutely speechless. I was shaking and had so many emotions running through me at once. This moment still doesn’t feel real because for 4 years I have been a belieber and the day finally came when I met my idol. All I have ever wanted was to meet Justin Bieber and my dream has come true. This will be a memory that I will be able to tell my children when I grow up. I haven’t been able to sleep at all because I keep replaying the memory over and over in my head. Thank you so much for everything Justin! You are such an amazing person and you give hope to all the beliebers out there. You taught me to NEVER SAY NEVER and I will always dream. This will forever be the best day of my life! -@NicoletteBiebe2 Read the rest here: My name is Alexandra. Not only was it April 13th, it was…

My name is Daniela and this is My Bieber Experience. Lets get…

My name is Daniela and this is My Bieber Experience.  Lets get started. Like millions of people, I LOVE JUSTIN BIEBER and I stuck to the saying Never Say Never, but I didn’t think my dream could really come true. Everything started when Justin was coming to my country, I knew tickets would sell out in less than 10 minutes, so I joined to Justin’s fan page to have a better chance for pre-sale. The page announced they were going to have a contest for meet and greets I made a song, inviting people to join. I just made a video of me singing it and I sent it, I never expected I could win. It was Friday night, we took a plane to the city where the concert was going to be. We finally arrived to the apartment.  I entered my email and that’s were I saw it. The headline said: Congratulations Daniela! You’re officially invited to attend. I was in SHOCK. I didn’t said anything , I just clicked the link and that was when I realized I was one of the winners!! I was going to meet Justin in a couple of days! I started to scream (It was late, now I feel bad for the neighbors haha) and  I never thought I would do this, I was like oh c’mon! How can people do that? But yes, I cried.  The next day was when I was going to meet Justin Bieber. We arrived at 4pm, then they gave me a wristband and then they took me to the place I was going to meet him. I waited for 2 hours . I saw Ryan Good, Cobra Starship and Big Time Rush. I was the first one in the line and finally, Scooter came out. Then I saw Kenny at the door , I talked to him a little bit cause it was my time to enter. It was a dark room, I didn’t see him in the beggining but then I turned around and there he was.  Justin saw me and said, “HEY C’MON!” and gave me a big hug.  Everyone thinks you will talk to him like an hour, but honestly after you see him, your plan suddenly disappears. He grabbed me around the waist and they took us our picture.  He was really nice! I couldn’t talk, I was just able to say good-bye and he told me, “Bye, Thank You!”  I went out and Scooter who waiting for me, so I asked him for a pic, and he gently accepted. After that, we went to our seats. It was the BEST CONCERT EVER. That was totally the best day of my life. I never thought that could really happen to a girl like me. Now I just want to say, THANK YOU FOR READING THIS and that DREAMS DO COME TRUE, YOU NEED TO BE POSITIVE NO MATTER WHAT. “A lot of people will tell you that you can’t, all you gotta do is turn around and say watch me”  -@DanielaVel143 See original here: My name is Daniela and this is My Bieber Experience. Lets get…

Sundance 2012 Concert Guide: Who’s Playing When

Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Afrojack and more set to perform at film festival in Park City, Utah. By Kara Warner The Egyptian theater in Park City, Utah Photo: Alexandra Wyman/Getty Images For those unfamiliar with the goings-on at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, the annual star-studded event has morphed from a modest independent film festival into a full-blown showcase for all aspects of the entertainment industry, including film, television and music — not to mention the promotional opportunities for a multitude of consumer goods and lifestyle brands at the festival’s infamous gifting lounges. In regard to the musical element of the festival, this year’s performance and concert lineup features a slew of big names more accustomed to large venues with sell-out crowds than the intimate settings at Sundance’s smaller-scale venues. Microsoft’s Bing Bar, located at the historic former Claim Jumper Hotel on Main Street, will feature Wiz Khalifa and Jason Mraz on Friday, Drake on Saturday, Cobra Starship on Sunday, Theophilus London on Monday, and James Murphy on Tuesday. Their SPIN Music Sessions series will include happy-hour shows by Gary Clark Jr. on Friday, Cool Kids on Saturday, Group Love on Sunday, and Fitz and the Tantrums on Monday. Following Friday’s artist talk with guests Mary J. Blige and Mos Def, celebrating the documentary “Invisible War,” the Sundance Channel is hosting a special afterparty with performances by Estelle and DJ Jesse Marco at Sugar Lounge on Main Street. Other acts to look out for include Afrojack on Thursday (January 19), OneRepublic at Park City Live on Tuesday, and the All-American Rejects on Wednesday as part of Sundance’s ASCAP event. Justin Bieber Tourmate Weighs In On Paternity Suit

‘It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,’ Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage Justin Bieber recently told the “Today” show that it’s impossible he fathered Mariah Yeater’s baby, as claimed in a headline-making paternity suit . Why? The minute he finishes a show, he promptly makes his way from the stage to an awaiting car, so there’s no time for backstage trysts. Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, Bieber’s onetime tourmate , confirmed the teen star’s story. “It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,” he told MTV News on the red carpet at the Glamour Women of the Year event in New York on Monday. “The security is so crazy there, you can’t get backstage. And even if you got backstage, first of all, he leaves the show as soon as he’s offstage, which is pretty cool. He runs offstage, gets in a car and jets, because the whole city turns into chaos.” Before the My World Tour wrapped up last month, the band experienced that craziness firsthand, likening it to something straight out of the movies. “There’s a really cool video of us online get mobbed at the airport,” Saporta recalled. “It’s like zombie apocalypse; it’s awesome.” Speaking of awesome, 2011 has been a pretty great year for Cobra Starship. Their infectious, Sabi-featuring track “You Make Me Feel” has been burning up radio, but that Bieber tour is pretty much the highlight of the year for Saporta. “We were playing, like, 50,000-people stadiums,” Saporta said of the South American jaunt. “It was insane, and I’m from South America too, so for me, it was especially satisfying. I gotta say, for being the most famous kid in the universe, he’s remarkably well-adjusted, and … there’s like 75 people traveling with him. It feels like a family, and it was really nice to be a part of that family for a bit of time.” Related Artists Cobra Starship Justin Bieber

Britney Spears Remix Album ‘Shines New Light’ On EDM

B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2, out Tuesday, features Ti&#235sto’s ‘timeless’ take on ‘Piece of Me.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Damian Vaca Britney Spears Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images On Britney Spears ‘ latest release, B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2 , which dropped Tuesday (October 11), a group of dance music’s biggest names have put their stamp on some of the singer’s most-popular tunes from the past few years. Chopped, screwed and broken down, the songs reach new extremes. “It’s cool that big mainstream pop artists let their music be remixed by people in the underground, like me,” Kaskade , who contributed his version of “Gimme More,” told MTV News. “It shines a new light on the EDM scene and how far it can reach. I give Britney props for taking chances and letting dance music be heard by the masses.” Kaskade is one of many EDM artists who appear on the album. He and other DJs who contributed say it’s been a gratifying experience. “She’s been a pop icon for so long. I appreciate a lot of the values she brings to music,” Cobra Starship ‘s Alex Suarez explained. “She sings really well. I appreciate her talents. I definitely respect what she does and why she’s successful. “I’m impressed people stick by her, and when I got the opportunity, I was like, ‘Wow.’ Britney Spears is huge. She’s a huge name worldwide.’ ” Suarez remixed “Till the World Ends” and said he didn’t want to go too far off course for his take on the Femme Fatale single. “I thought the original was really good to begin with,” he explained. “I thought I wanted to make this as special as I can. I tried to stick true to the structure of the song. “Sometimes, you get remixes and they chop it up and mix it around, which is cool. The thing with a Britney Spears remix is people like to sing along.” Kaskade explained that he was “excited at the chance to get to mess with” “Gimme More,” and he wanted to make sure his remix worked with his musical style. “I wanted to make sure that it would be something that would eventually fit into my live set,” he said. “That is the true test for me: Taking a huge pop vocal and making it work with my music can be a little tricky, but I find the challenge fun. I really dig what Brit does, and this song is awesome, so I was really excited.” The album is a blend of old and new remixes: EDM superstar Ti

Big Sean And Kanye West’s ‘Marvin & Chardonnay’ Video: G.O.O.D. Times

‘What G.O.O.D. Music stands for is just that quality,’ Sean tells MTV News of Hype Williams-directed clip. By Rob Markman Kanye West and Big Sean Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage If 1970s soul and a good white wine weren’t enough, Big Sean, Kanye West and hook man Roscoe Dash recruited Hype Williams to set the mood for their just-released “Marvin & Chardonnay” video. In true Hype fashion, the clip starts with scrolling credits revealing the video’s brightly styled stars. Vibrant hues of blue, red, purple and yellow pop onscreen and set the tone for the next three minutes and 43 seconds as Big Sean and company rap amid the video’s principal vixens parading to and fro. “Me and Hype are homeys,” Sean told MTV News’ Sway on the “Marvin & Chardonnay” set back in July. “He’s a real dude, and it’s tight being around people that you consider legends and him just being so real. We came up in here and was just blasting DMX and all this different music. He gets inspired creatively from I don’t know what; he just has these crazy ideas.” Sean starts in a powder-blue blazer and matching tank top grinding on a light-skinned model in a two-piece bathing suit. In many ways, “Marvin & Chardonnay” exudes a similar vibe to the video for ‘Ye’s 2005 “Gold Digger” clip, which Williams also directed. What sets Sean’s video apart is Hype’s use of triangular shapes. At key moments, he splits the screen into three parts, leaving the Detroit rapper nestled between the symmetrically placed models. But in the end, there is no real story line or overall message — then again, that was never the point. Instead, we are left with a classic Hype Williams visual. “Colors, the visualization … what G.O.O.D. Music stands for is just that quality. Whatever we do is quality,” Sean said. “If we gonna have girls, we gonna have the best girls. If we gonna have yellow suits, it’s gonna be the best yellow suit. If we gonna have Versaces, it’s gonna be the OG Medusa-head Versace.” What do you think of Sean’s latest video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Big Sean Kanye West

Eminem Tops Britney Spears In Nail-Biting Song Of Summer Race

Bad Meets Evil’s ‘Lighters,’ featuring Bruno Mars, ekes past ‘I Wanna Go’ in MTV News poll. By John Mitchell Royce Da 5’9″ and Eminem Photo: MTV News It was a contentious showdown, but after many lead changes, Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars, bested Britney Spears’ “I Wanna Go” to take MTV News’ Song of Summer crown. Nearly a half-million votes were cast, though a vast majority (327,679) of those were split almost evenly between Royce Da 5’9″ and Eminem’s joint project and Spears. Fan groups rallied behind their respective favorites, leading to a lot of back-and-forth over the past few days, but “Lighters” ultimately came out ahead when polls closed earlier Wednesday (September 7), taking 38.2 percent of the tally with 167,202 votes. The track has turned into a summer sleeper hit for Em, Royce and Mars. It is currently holding strong at #4, its peak position so far, on the Billboard Hot 100, 11 weeks after debuting on the chart. Spears’ “I Wanna Go” — the third Billboard top 10 hit from Femme Fatale — trailed with just over 36.6 percent. If Spears is less than pleased with coming in second, she can take comfort in knowing that her 160,477 votes put her way ahead of her nearest competitor, Lady Gaga, by well over 100,000 votes. Taking 11.91 percent of the poll, Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” came in third with 52,126 votes. The only other song to pull down a sizable number of votes was Rihanna’s “S&M,” a track released in late spring that topped the charts early this summer, which garnered 34,681 votes for 7.92 percent of the tally. Interestingly, many of the summer’s biggest chart hits found themselves without much love in our Newsroom poll. Among the songs that reached #1 on the Billboard singles chart but found themselves with fractional percentages of the vote here were Katy Perry’s history-making “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” with just 1.26 percent, Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” (0.33 percent), LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” (0.71 percent) and this week’s Hot 100 #1, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger” (0.98 percent). Radio hits from Pitbull and Nicki Minaj also missed the boat with 3,090 votes (0.71 percent) and 1,655 votes (0.38 percent), respectively, for “Give Me Everything” and “Super Bass,” while “Dirty Dancer” by Enrique Iglesias featuring Usher and Lil Wayne took 0.28 percent and “Otis” from Throne duo Jay-Z and Kanye West scored just 0.12 percent (or 524 votes). The numbers for mainstream artists like Perry, Minaj and West were fairly similar to those accrued by lower-profile acts Foster the People, Cobra Starship and David Guetta. Foster’s “Pumped Up Kicks” earned the band 0.14 percent of our poll, with slightly bigger numbers falling to Cobra’s “You Make Me Feel” (0.25) and Guetta’s “Where Them Girls At” (0.16). Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo, Tilapia: VMA ‘Experts’ Weigh In!

Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — who may or may not be in Cobra Starship — sound off on 2011 nominees. By James Montgomery VMA “experts” Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice Photo: MTV News In addition to looking a whole lot like Cobra Starship’s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez, world-renowned journalists Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice are also the go-to guys for hot scoops and slightly unnerving personal revelations. So it makes sense that they’d be in Los Angeles this week: After all, it’s the location of the 2011 Video Music Awards . After a few hours spent marinating in the SoCal sun, boy, do the revelations get personal. Earlier this week, as Cobra Starship were rehearsing for their VMA Pre-Show performance , MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with the dynamic duo to get their take on the field of nominees for the big show. Much like our previous encounters , Bagwell and Twice had an awful lot to say. For example, both are beyond excited to see what Lady Gaga will do in her VMA-opening number (“If I could put my money on it, I’m gonna bet she’s gonna be walking out in somebody else’s skin!” Twice enthused), and both can’t wait to see who takes home the Moonman for Best Male Video (Bagwell is partial to Cee Lo Green’s “F— You,” since “[It’s] how my ex-wife Teresa says good morning to me!”). And while they seemed mystified by most of the VMA noms — in response to Nicki Minaj’s Best Female Video nod for “Super Bass,” Bagwell let it be known that he’s “more of a tilapia fan,” and Twice was convinced that not only were the Foo Fighters Asian, but their Best Rock Video-nominated “Walk” clip was actually spelled “Wok” — they both agreed on a favorite in the night’s biggest category, Video of the Year. “I’m going to have to go with [Tyler, the Creator’s] ‘Yonkers,’ ” Bagwell enthused. “I once dated a gal who lived up there whose [ censored for your protection ]. I miss you, Cheyenne. Give me a buzz sometime.” You know what? Perhaps it’s best if you just watched it all for yourself. Check out the video above for Bagwell and Twice on the 2011 Video Music Awards. View at your own peril.
