‘American Idol’ Vs. ‘Platinum Hit’: Kara DioGuardi Compares

‘Idol’ alum says she’s ‘way more myself’ on new songwriting reality competition. By Jim Cantiello Kara DioGuardi on “Platinum Hits” Photo: Bravo TV Kara DioGuardi is well aware of what you think about her, thank you very much. The former “American Idol” judge — who was already a major name in the songwriting community before she sat next to Simon, Randy, Paula and Ellen — can’t go a day without viewers approaching her to speak their mind. “People actually apologize to me,” the good-natured DioGuardi told MTV News on Wednesday morning (June 15). “They’ll go, ‘I didn’t even know you were in the music business. We thought you were some random girl they pulled off of Hollywood Boulevard that looked like Paula Abdul.’ ” Kara’s the first to acknowledge that she and live TV went together like chocolate and an onion, to paraphrase an infamous Cowell barb. Even worse, “It may have sent the message ‘Is she still writing? Does she have time to write?’ ” DioGuardi said before setting the record straight. “I was writing [new music] before [‘Idol’] shows. I co-wrote [Cobra Starship’s] ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ before a show, like two hours before! I was like, ‘We gotta bang this out. I got hair and makeup,’ ” DioGuardi recalled. “Don’t give your day job up. Always gotta keep the day job.” With Bravo’s “Platinum Hit,” a slick new songwriting reality competition that DioGuardi judges alongside host Jewel and celeb guests, Kara finally found a way to turn her day job into her TV job. Bonus: She can have a second take in the event of an “Idol”-esque gaffe, like calling Studio 54 “Studio 57” or forgetting how to count. “I’m way more myself,” DioGuardi said. “After nine hours of filming, you start to forget that you’re on a TV show, and then the New York part of me really comes out. I say, ‘Look, man. … Listen, bitch!’ ” she joked. Instead of banging on tables, calling contestants “sweetie” and raving about “artistry” the way she did on “Idol,” DioGuardi’s taking a different approach with her songwriting prot

Justin Bieber Vs Cobra Starship

This past week I met Gabe from Cobra Starship and he challenged me via twitter to a dance off at the jingle ball show in Sacramento with The End. Because of my broken foot i couldnt thrash him..haha..so i decided to just play the drums a little bit instead. Playing the drums and using a broken foot on the pedal isnt easy so i dont know how “epic” this solo was but it was worth it. Justin Bieber’s Early Drummer Days Featured In ‘Never Say Never’

Friends and family talk about Bieber’s evolution as a drummer in new clip from upcoming 3-D film By Terri Schwartz Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures The February 11 release of John Chu’s 3-D doc, “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” is fast approaching, and in addition to the Beebs’ many tweets about the flick, we now have another glimpse at what it has in store for eager fans. A new clip from the film shows how Bieber’s talent for drums that surfaced at a young age. It’s also full of more cute Bieber baby videos . “He never had any lessons or anything. I just never thought of it being anything other than for fun,” Bieber’s mother Pattie Malette says in the clip. Bieber’s drum collection quickly expanded from a handheld drum to a mini drum kit, and eventually, his family friends held a benefit concert and raised enough money to buy the young prodigy his own set of Pearl drums. The 16-year-old pop star made waves at the 2010 VMAs when he rocked out on the drums during his amplified set. He also showed off his skills on the skins at the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento , where he played an impressive drum solo during Cobra Starship’s performance. Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, who had been trying to challenge Bieber to a dance off, tweeted after the fact, “Justin Bieber smoked me hard tonight. He couldn’t win the dance off. But he shredded a gnarly drum solo. I back this kid on the real. Legit.” Bieber wouldn’t be the first artist to start out behind the kit before his vocal capabilities propelled him to the spotlight. He joins the powerful ranks of drummers-turned-singers such as Dave Grohl, Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, Ringo Starr and Tommy Lee. 3OH!3, Travie McCoy, Cobra Starship Rocked For A Good Cause On Too Fast For Love Tour

Students who won concert tickets talk winning MTV’s GYT: Get Yourself Tested campus challenge. By Alexandria Bradshaw 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News MTV’s Too Fast For Love Tour drew to a close on June 11, in Philadelphia, after kicking off back in April. And headliners Cobra Starship, Travie McCoy and 3OH!3 performed for a good cause: The concert festival was organized to raise awareness of and promote testing for sexually transmitted diseases. The sold-out crowd included students from Roger Williams University, who packed the front row after crushing the competition in the GYT: Get Yourself Tested Campus Challenge. In winning the contest, those students underlined the importance of getting tested for STDs. And on Sunday, which marks annual National HIV Testing Day, you can do the same. A wealth of information on how to track down free HIV-testing locations and events is available at MTV’s GYTnow.org . Readers can also find important facts about HIV-AIDS and tips on how to bring up testing with partners or health-care providers. The campus challenge was part of the MTV-sponsored GYT campaign, mounted in response to some alarming statistics. Among them is the fact that one in two young people will get an STD by age 25 — many without knowing it. The GYT campaign seeks to create a social movement around getting tested. Aimed specifically at college students, RWU beat out 166 schools this year for the top spot in the challenge by successfully recruiting a little more than 500 participants who agreed to undergo testing. Kirstie Goodwin, a rising junior and one of RWU’s Student Health and Wellness Educators, or H.A.W.E.S., led RWU to the win, recruiting 30 percent of the final tally. “I think raising awareness can make a difference. A lot of people on campus didn’t realize that [RWU] Health Services even does testing,” she said. “After we did the GYT campus challenge, they ran out of HIV tests in Health Services because so many people wanted to get tested.” “Sexual health and sexuality have always been on RWU’s radar,” said Donna Darmody, director of health education for the H.A.W.E.S. program. “Students are encouraged to have honest talks about sex right from the get-go because they are comfortable about the topic; they’re more inclined to be safe.” Exclusive footage from the Too Fast For Love Tour, as well as blog posts by winning students about their trip to Philly is available on Think.MTV.com . Gabe Saporta Recalls Patriotic Make-Out Session On ‘When I Was 17’

Cobra Starship frontman recounts a fateful class trip to Washington, D.C., on the latest episode. By James Montgomery Gabe Saporta Photo: MTV News This might not exactly come as a surprise, but when he was 17, Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta was a bit of a hell-raiser. Seems that the manic mastermind behind hits like “Good Girls Gone Bad” was never far away from trouble as a teen, much to the chagrin of pretty much every authority figure around him. “When I was 17, I was pretty much just as obnoxious as I am now, but louder,” Saporta laughed. “I went against the grain a little bit, and you always get in trouble when you do that. … Teachers hated me.” As a straight-edge kid at a Hebrew school (“We had, like, 11 periods a day,” he sighed), Saporta didn’t have to work very hard to stand out from the pack. It just seemed to come naturally to him, particularly on one fateful class trip to Washington, D.C., which he recounted on the latest episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” also featuring Evan Lysacek and Kimberly Caldwell. “We went on a class trip to Washington, D.C., to learn about the history of our government … and everyone had a hotel room, two people per room, two boys, two girls in each room,” Saporta smiled. “But really, class trips are just make-out sessions, so I went and snuck into one of these girls’ rooms … only this girl that I was making out with, her roommate who she was paired up with came back and freaked out and, like, had a panic attack.” The spooked roommate grabbed a chaperone, and before he knew it, Saporta was busted. He got sent home from the trip, and even though he felt the wrath of his folks when he arrived home, he still thinks the stunt was worth it — after all, it only added to his legend. “I got in trouble the next day, and I got sent home from the Washington trip,” he said. “I got kicked off the trip, I got to make out with a girl, and everyone’s like, ‘Wow, you were making out with a girl and you got kicked off the trip! That rules!’ ” The latest episode of “When I Was 17” — featuring Saporta, Evan Lysacek and Kimberly Caldwell — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Cobra Starship Recap MTV’s Musical March Madness Tournament

Who will win the championship: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? By James Montgomery Cobra Starship’s Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton Photo: MTV News You could call MTV’s Musical March Madness many things (and, in light of Tokio Hotel’s Final Four ousting, their fans already are), but “predictable” is not one of them. This was, after all, a tournament determined entirely by your votes, which meant that, really, anything was possible — a fact we quickly realized when three of the four #1 seeds lost in the opening round (and the fourth lost in the second ). It was a tournament defined by upsets and run by underdogs, be they the Hold Steady or Panic! at the Disco, Patrick Stump or Alice in Chains — or, most notably, Tokio and Coheed and Cambria, two bands who were basically tossed into the tournament at the last minute and made it to the Final Four. In Coheed’s case, they made it all the way to the championship game, where they’ll face off against My Chemical Romance — you know, a band that hasn’t released a new album in, like, four years and is currently without a drummer . Basically, this whole thing made absolutely zero sense. Watching it unfold was a total blast, but attempting to recap the whole thing has seemed nearly impossible. That’s why we turned to a pair of sportscasting legends who know a thing or two about pulling off the impossible — CSPN analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — to do the recapping for us. (And yes, we’re aware they look very much like Cobra Starship ‘s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez; we’ll just chalk that up to a coincidence.) With Newsroom blog, we figured now would be a pretty good time to roll out Bagwell and Twice’s tournament recap. Watch it while you vote. Perhaps it will help sway you one way or the other (that Dick is a persuasive guy — trust us). We’ll crown our Musical March Madness champion on Wednesday. Who are you pulling for in the championship game: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? Let us know in the comments below! And make your vote count by hitting the Newsroom blog . 3OH!3 Say They Will ‘Show Up’ To Katy Perry And Russell Brand’s Wedding

‘I haven’t been home yet, so it’s probably in the mailbox,’ Sean Foreman says about the whereabouts of his invitation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News While 3OH!3 are busy working on their new album and gearing up for a tour with Cobra Starship this summer, they are also looking forward to possibly attending pal Katy Perry’s wedding to Russell Brand . It seems that she promised her “Starstrukk” collaborators they would receive an invite to the big day. “I haven’t been home yet, so it’s probably in the mailbox,” Sean Foreman joked. “We travel a lot.” But he does have a plan in place in case his invitation gets lost in the mail. “I’ll just show up,” he teased. “We’ll be fine.” Bandmate Nathaniel Motte added that the last time he saw Perry she made it pretty clear that she had every intention of saving a space for them at the wedding whenever it should happen to go down. “She said it was in the mail. You know the postal service these days!” he said. “Plus I saw her the other day and she was like, ‘I sent it.’ Her sister was there and she [winked] at her sister. Long story short … [we’ll be there].” Regardless of the whereabouts of their invitations, 3OH!3 insist that “bridezilla” Brand has their seal of approval. “We did meet him — super nice, really, really nice,” Foreman said. Plus, the guys admit that Brand does seem to have a pretty great sense of humor as evidenced by his next film, “Get Him To the Greek.” “His movie seems pretty funny,” Motte continued, adding that both halves of the couple are busy with the wedding and other projects. “She’s got a lot of stuff she’s working on.” Are you excited about Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s wedding? L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Say New Tape ‘Represents The Streets Of Chicago’

L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Say New Tape ‘Represents The Streets Of Chicago’ By Shaheem Reid L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Photo: Bogus Boys This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : L.E.P/ Bogus Boys Holding It Down For : Chicago Mixtape : Don’t Feed Da Killaz, Vol. 3 Real Spit : The Low End Professionals, L.E.P for short, have been wreaking havoc in Chicago’s underground-rap scene for over a decade. The respect that the Count, Moonie and the under-house-arrest Bigg Rugg have in the streets translates much farther than the Windy City. The night the Mixtape Daily cameras caught up with Count and Moonie, they were partying with Wale, and the group has recorded with the likes of Jim Jones and Young Dro over the years. For the Bogus Boys, though, industry co-signs are cool, but they care most about the love in the ‘hood. “We been together 12 years,” Count said, standing next to Moonie in front of the now-closed (but still legendary) Cabrini-Green projects. “We been knowing each other for a long time. This is my brother. We had a couple of stop-and-go’s, but we been doing this music for some time. We at our best right now.” Some members of the L.E.P crew have been killed in the street, others sent to prison, but the music hasn’t stopped. “The story needs to be told,” said Count, whose flow is reminiscent of Rakim’s. “Our streets are a little bit different from where y’all at. Y’all need to know about Chicago.” “Get in tune,” Moonie advised. “We’re gonna take y’all on a journey through the city. [The mixtape] represents the streets of Chicago. It’s something new. Something that hasn’t been touched on. That’s what we’re bringing to y’all. Real stuff. We embody the whole situation in Chicago, letting y’all know what’s going on.” Joints to Check For

David Guetta Builds A ‘Bridge’ Between Dance Music And The Mainstream

His work with the Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Kelly Rowland made him a superstar, so he plans to keep the collabos coming. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News It’s Dance Music Week at MTV News, and we’re bringing you the latest news from the electronic/dance-music world. Lady Gaga, with her RedOne-produced hits like “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance,” has had a lot to do with making club synths mainstream. Of course, there is another trailblazer you should know about. He’s a veteran, but over the past two years, French DJ/producer David Guetta has made impressive strides, turning dance music into pop music. “He’s an incredible DJ, first of all,” Guetta’s “Sexy Chick” collaborator, Akon, recently told MTV News. “Second, he’s an incredible producer.” Dutch electronic-music icon Tiësto told us, “After all of the collaborations, like the Black Eyed Peas did with David Guetta [‘I Gotta Feeling,’ which Guetta produced with Will.I.Am] and Kelly Rowland [‘When Love Takes Over’], I think that woke up the whole scene. Everybody wants to be a part of dance music.” Dance music’s new shining star, 22-year-old Afrojack, told MTV News, “He introduced me to everybody, and I had a great time with Will.I.Am, Kelis and Apl.De.Ap. David is just a really nice guy. He’s not only my friend in the studio, but he’s my friend outside.” Respected by most in music, Guetta has been on a dream run with a series of collaborations (with folks like the Peas, Akon, Estelle, LMFAO , Ne-Yo, and Kid Cudi) that have done as much to make dance music mainstream as they have to turn the DJ/producer into a global superstar. On an average weekend, he spins records for a 100,000 people (like he did at the recent in Miami). “I always felt that our music was underrated,” Guetta told MTV News recently. “I felt that it should be as big as hip-hop and rock. It happened this year with my album One Love. This is still a huge, fantastic, underground scene. But that bridge that I created between electronic Euro culture and American urban culture really made a difference, I think. To finally have dance-music records being played on the radio in America is pretty incredible. “It is, like, really crazy, because I started as a hip-hop DJ, then discovered house music and was pulled into house,” he added. “But also, I never stopped listening to hip-hop at home. It just came back to me. It’s like destiny.” Now that he’s found success merging dance and hip-hop, Guetta plans to keep the collabos coming. “The mix between urban and electronic is really what I’m excited about today, and I want to do that direction for the next album, absolutely,” he said. “Dance music is the next thing for the next 10 years. There’s nothing you can do about it!” When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. We’ll be catching up with your favorite dance-floor staples as well as introducing you to up-and-coming talent. Related Videos It’s Dance Music Week! Related Artists David Guetta

3Oh!3 Plan Animatronics, Basketball For Tour With Cobra Starship

The Colorado duo are strategizing for the court and the stage before April 28. By Jocelyn Vena 3Oh!3 Photo: Gus Stewart/ Redferns This spring 3Oh!3 will hit the road with Cobra Starship, kicking off their tour on April 28 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. And while both bands’ sounds will have their fans dancing in the aisles, they have a couple of other things in common, like a considerable height advantage on the basketball court. “Apparently, we have a massive truck that’s coming on the tour with us. People don’t know that [3Oh!3 bandmate Sean Foreman is] actually tall,” Nathaniel Motte said. “They think he’s small, ’cause I’m tall. [He’s] 6’1” and I’m 6’7” and I think [Cobra Starship] have a couple dudes who are, like, 6’4″. We’re gonna be playing basketball.” Foreman feared that the members of Cobra Starship will have the edge over them, because “collectively they’re taller.” But aside from coming up with b-ball strategies, 3OH!3 have been spending time planning other aspects of the tour. “We’ve been piecing it together as far as the stage production and the shows,” Foreman said. “I think it’s going to be fun. It seems like a really cool package for the money.” The Colorado duo, who are set to release new album Streets of Gold in June, said there are some extra treats in store for the fans who come to see them live. “We’re gonna be doing some cool stuff. Some meet-and-greet stuff,” Motte continued. “The sets are going to be really fun. We’re trying to keep ticket prices super low. … We got some animatronics.” Are you looking forward to the Cobra Starship and 3OH!3 tour? Tell us in the comments!
