My Chemical Romance’s ‘Kids From Yesterday’: Death Of Danger

Fan-made video for ‘The Kids From Yesterday’ looks back at the band’s rise to fame. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way in “The Kids From Yesterday” music video Photo: Warner Music Group Really, My Chemical Romance ‘s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys deserved better. A big, bold re-invention of their sound and swagger, it was, by the band’s own admission, a “missile” aimed at destroying the staid state of rock and roll, and perhaps because of that fact, it failed to catch on here in the states. You could practically track its decline based on the videos MCR released off the album, starting with the big-budget “Na Na Na” and the equally flashy follow-up, “Sing,” in which they offed the titular Killjoys (who seemingly will never be heard of again). Their next single, “Planetary (Go!)” came coupled with a live video, and, to the best of my knowledge, a clip for “Bulletproof Heart” never materialized at all. My Chem actually seemed to address the matter in an interview with MTV News last year , in which frontman Gerard Way lamented that the band had “gone through so many things” over the course of the Danger Days cycle, and hinted that, if there were to be any more videos off the album, they’d have to be financed by MCR themselves. So it’s somewhat fitting that, on Monday, they unveiled the final clip from Danger Days: a fan-made video for “The Kids From Yesterday” that documents the band’s decade-long climb from Neo-Goth New Jersey rockers to interplanetary conceptual quartet. Like the song itself, the clip is a bittersweet thing, recounting MCR’s many triumphs (a pastiche of memorable live moments, it culminates with their headlining slots at Reading and Leeds this past summer), while leaving those who love to read between the lines to wonder if perhaps the band’s latest era also represents the end … not necessarily of My Chem themselves, but of a moment in rock that now seems to have all but disappeared. Truly, MCR were the last bastions of the heady heyday of mid-aughts MySpace punk, and now, well, who knows what’s next? Of course, much of the message behind Danger Days seems to be one of self-empowerment, of inspiring fans to take matters into their own hands and shaking up the status quo. That’s yet another reason why “Kids” is such a fitting sendoff; it was made in collaboration with a fan named Emily Eisemann, who had culled through live footage and initially created a clip of her own. There’s a reason why the video ends with the phrase “Art is the Weapon,” after all: it’s been the band’s clarion call this entire time. It’s also something Way touched on during Danger Days’ release, when he told MTV News that the album was not a conceptual piece, but rather “a complete allegory” for smashing the system and placing the power directly in the hands of their fans. And “Kids” is proof that MCR’s message was heard loud and clear, perhaps not by a majority of the record-buying public, but definitely — and most appropriately — by their fans. Sometimes, sales aren’t the only measure of a band’s success, and Danger Days is a testament to that fact. “Kids” may bring one chapter of their career to a close, but wherever My Chemical Romance go next, you know they’ll do so boldly; that’s what makes great bands truly great after all: the willingness to push the boundaries, to purvey inspiration, to shake things up … sometimes even at their own expense. Matt And Kim Amped To Open Blink-182, My Chemical Romance Tour

‘Our energy is in the same place,’ Matt tells MTV News of his headlining tourmates on Honda Civic dates. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker, with additional reporting by Morgan Schwartz Photo: Getty Images Matt and Kim have been recording material at the brand-new Converse Rubber Tracks recording studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. MTV News went there to catch up with the indie/pop duo, and while they mostly kept quiet about any new songs, they did talk to us about their recent Sidewalks Tour as well as their new opening-act gig on the Honda Civic Tour with Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance. The animated Brooklyn-based musicians couldn’t seem to contain their excitement about joining Blink and MCR. “This year has been just a nonstop year,” Matt gushed. “We didn’t want to stop!” Kim said of their headlining Sidewalks Tour. “We wanted to add more dates, we wanted to keep going.” Matt and Kim will begin touring with Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance this month, and they plan to bring it, knowing that some fans at the venues may not be familiar with their music yet. “At our shows, it’s not just like one type of audience member,” Matt explained of the kinds of crowds they’re used to seeing. “It’s people who are into all different kinds of music.” As for playing in front of the fanbases of two different bands on the tour, Matt and Kim aren’t fretting. “Even though musically we might sound a bit different than those two bands, our energy is in the same place,” Matt said, referring to the three groups’ shared love of stage-diving, crowd-surfing and moshing. “There’s a big difference between playing for, you know, 3,000 people at our show to playing to a 20,000-person place, where people might not know any of your songs,” Matt admitted with a smile. “But I feel we play a simple enough music, so upbeat and melody-driven, that on a first listen, people can almost be singing along to the songs by the end.” Fans can catch Matt and Kim on the Honda Civic Tour with Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance beginning September 7 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore, Disturbed Reach Final Four Of March Madness

One of these four bands will win the 2011 MMM title; vote now in the Newsroom blog! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Mikey Way and Gerard Way Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Three weeks ago, 64 bands embarked on the voyage that is MTV’s Musical March Madness . Now, after millions of votes and nearly as many grueling matchups, only four remain. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore and Disturbed each punched their ticket for the Final Four late Thursday night, and one of them will hoist the MMM trophy next week. Check out our MMM Bracket right here! It wasn’t easy for any of them. Much like the Sweet 16, voting in the Elite 8 broke records and went down to the wire. We wouldn’t expect anything less, not when the bands still competing were this big, and the stakes this high. And they’re about to get even higher. Because voting in our Final Four matchups — #9 Disturbed vs. #3 Green Day and #5 Paramore vs. #3 My Chemical Romance — is now under way over on the Newsroom blog, and it’ll be up to you to determine the two bands that’ll go head-to-head for the MMM championship. Final Four voting has begun on the Newsroom blog! While you consider just whom you’ll be voting for — if you haven’t made your mind up already — let’s take a look back at each band’s journey to the Final Four. Disturbed The lowest-seeded band still standing, Disturbed entered MMM as a #9, but quickly served notice that they were a force to be reckoned with, knocking off #8 the Dave Matthews Band in the opening round, then shocking the world by slipping by the Midwest’s top seed, the Foo Fighters , to reach the Sweet 16. Then, they handled Patrick Stump and, perhaps inspired by frontman David Draiman’s now legendary “time to make a statement” speech, took down defending MMM champs Coheed and Cambria in an air-tight battle. With more than 105,000 votes cast, Disturbed outdistanced Coheed by less than 500 to win the Midwest region and earn a spot in the Final Four. Green Day Last year, Green Day were sent packing in the opening round of the tournament, an exit that left them with a bitter taste in their mouths and a sizeble chip on their shoulders. So, in their 2011 march to the Final Four, they took no prisoners, absolutely dominating Adam Lambert in the first round, then going toe-to-toe with a pair of their fellow rock heavyweights — U2 and Blink-182 — and barely breaking a sweat. Their toughest challenge came in the Elite 8 against, ironically enough, Panic! at the Disco, the very band that sent them packing last year. Green Day got revenge , withstanding a late surge from the Panic! guys to take the West region title and head to the Final Four. Paramore Nearly two years ago, we wrote that Paramore were poised “to become the kings and queen of the South.” Little did we know how right we’d be; after a string of impressive victories, Hayley Williams and the guys are, in fact, the rulers of the region, and they’ve certainly earned their crowns. No band faced a stiffer series of matchups throughout the tourney — Paramore drew No Doubt in the opening round and Kings of Leon in the second — and that was before they took on tournament vets Tokio Hotel in the Elite 8. Each time, they rose to the challenge, taking the South region title and, in the process, may very well have become the favorites to win it all. My Chemical Romance It was heartbreak city for MCR last year, as they rode a wave of fervent fan support all the way to the MMM championship game, only to be crushed by Coheed. They’re the only band to climb the mountain once again, and they’ve done it with a frightening level of proficiency. Because, to this point, My Chemical Romance have yet to be really tested, rolling #14 Panda Bear in round one, #11 Rage Against the Machine in round two and #2 Radiohead in the Sweet 16 . They ended 16th-seeded Sum 41’s dream run in the Elite 8 , wrapping up the East title and barely breaking a sweat. In the Final Four, they’ll face off against Paramore, which might very well be the de facto 2011 championship game. MTV’s Musical March Madness has reached the Final Four. All winners are determined by your votes, so, if your favorite act is still standing, it’s up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — and you’d better; the MMM trophy is within reach! My Chemical Romance Team With Fans On ‘Sing It For Japan’

Band will release charity version of latest single and fan-fueled video, with all proceeds going to Red Cross efforts. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Samir Hussein/ Getty Images My Chemical Romance have announced plans to release a charity version of their song “Sing,” with all proceeds going to the Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Japan. But they’re not doing it alone. Instead, they’re reaching out to members of their MCRmy to help the cause. The band is asking fans to submit videos, pictures, drawings and written messages to the people of Japan through social sites like Twitter — using the hashtag #SINGItForJapan — which they’ll then compile into a video to be paired with the song. “We’d like to send messages of hope to Japan from people all over the world. … Go wherever your creativity and heart takes you. It could be as simple as you holding up a sign with ‘#SINGItForJapan’ written on it, or anything else you can dream up,” guitarist Ray Toro wrote on the band’s official site. “From what we’ve seen on tour, we know you guys can dream bigger than we ever could. Don’t be afraid to get your families involved. If you are inspired to do something alone, that’s great too. But we encourage you to get a big group of people from your community together. We want Japan to know just how many people are behind them.” Toro added that the band got the idea after noticing that, in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that ravaged Japan, fans were sending messages of support to the nation using the hashtag. “After the news of the earthquake and tsunami spread, I did what most people did. I stopped and stared at the TV. I sat at the computer, constantly refreshing CNN in hopes of some good news,” he wrote. “And I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I noticed a hashtag, ‘SINGItForJapan,’ where you kids were writing messages of hope, saying prayers and sending your condolences and well wishes to survivors. It moved me in a profound way.” The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET. There’s no news on just when the band’s new version of “Sing” will be made available, but for more information — and to submit material for #SINGItForJapan — check out My Chemical Romance’s official site .
