My Chemical Romance Call Danger Days ‘A Missile Directed At Rock And Roll’

‘The best way to love rock and roll is to shoot it in the head,’ band says. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: MTV News In the four years between The Black Parade and Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, My Chemical Romance were no strangers to the grandiose statement. It seems that, in every interview they gave, the band found a new way to describe their (then upcoming) album, calling it everything from a “very pure” bit of punk rock to — most famously — “a love letter to rock and roll” . The end result, of course, was Danger Days, an album that is both of those things (and neither), often at the same time. And yet, it has basically been defined within those parameters. So, looking back on it now, do MCR regret anything they said in the lead-up to the album? Not really. “It makes me laugh when I [read it now],” frontman Gerard Way said, smiling. “Part of the problem was: We tried to define the record before we made the record. And it’s not all our fault,” guitarist Frank Iero added, “because everyone kept asking us, ‘Oh, what’s it going to be?’ And when we said, ‘Oh, we don’t know,’ they’re like, ‘Well, whadaya mean? What’s it going to be? Can you speculate?’ And it’s like, ‘Well, it’s going to be this,’ and when we found out what that is, it changed.” And that change was, of course, necessary. Both for the band’s survival and the scope of the new album. In retrospect, MCR stand by everything they said about Danger Days, because, really, deep down in its chrome-plated heart, it still is “a love letter” to American rock and roll . It’s just written from My Chemical Romance’s rather-unique perspective. “At first, we said, ‘It’s a love letter to rock and roll,’ and we found out that the best way to love rock and roll is to shoot it in the head,” Iero said. “So we made a record that was like a missile directed at rock and roll. “It just started to change and evolve, and then the band evolved at the same time. And I think that’s the way you have to make a record: in a very organic way.” What do you think of Danger Days ? Give us your review in the comments! My Chemical Romance Fans Get Batty, Battered At L.A. Gig

‘I got kicked [and] hit on the head, but it never felt so good,’ gushed one fan at MCR’s Danger Days release party. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way performs in Los Angeles on Monday Photo: MTV.com HOLLYWOOD — My Chemical Romance threw a party on Monday night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip to celebrate the release of their brand new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys , and the members of the MCRmy showed up in their Killjoy finest. Both inside and out, the House of Blues was transformed into a Day-Glo diaspora, part postapocalyptic fashion spectacle, part bizarre performance-art piece, as My Chem fans donned neon masks, brightly colored bandanas and a variety of blinking accessories (glasses, necklaces, bracelets, etc.), all in the name of Danger Days. They strolled through the “Zone 5 Carnival,” scarfed down cotton candy, avoided the menacing Draculoids that patrolled the grounds and — perhaps most importantly — witnessed one heck of a concert. “It was amazing. They’re my favorite band, so I was just completely stoked the whole time,” 17-year-old MCR fan Ryan Johnson said. “There was a lot of moshing going, and it was kind of crazy. The energy was amazing.” And that energy was matched only by some MCR followers’ dedication … they came from miles around (and a half a world away) to be here on this night, to be with their fellow fanatics and say they were there on the night their favorite band released its most ambitious album to date. “It was one of the most amazing concerts of my life … the utter energy that MCR puts out to the fans and the love all of us have for them, we all come together and it’s like one big family having an amazing get-together,” 15-year-old Matt Jennette said. “I came all the way here from Chicago because this is the album-release party and I love them with an unholy dedication. I had to see ’em. I paid like $200 for the tickets and it was worth it without a shadow of a doubt.” “I came from Italy, just because I love them more than my life. Their music makes me feel happy,” Stefania Fiorese, 24, added. “We were in the first row and it was amazing. I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Paris, and it was so good, but this one was better. The crowd was pushing so hard — everyone was jumping, everyone was trying to reach them. Tomorrow I will be purple all over my body but I don’t care.” That sentiment was echoed by pretty much every MCR fan who MTV News spoke to on Monday, many of whom limped out of the House of Blues a little battered, but completely, totally, blissed out of their minds. “They never cease to amaze me, they’re always great shows,” John Conaty, 20, beamed. “I got kicked, crowd surfed on, got hit on the head numerous times, but it never felt so good. At every My Chemical Romance show, getting crushed feels the best.” “I got kicked in the face! I didn’t even see it coming!” 16-year-old Savannah Hill laughed. “There was a crowd surfer and then they just came out of nowhere and whammed me in the face, but then I continued to watch the show. It was awesome.” Have you seen My Chemical Romance live? Tell us about your concert experiences in the comments. Related Videos Live In LA: My Chemical Romance Related Artists My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance Celebrate Danger Days’ Release Live From L.A.

Album-release concert will stream live on MTV.com starting at 10 p.m. ET tonight! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero and Gerard Way Photo: MTV News HOLLYWOOD — My Chemical Romance went to the brink and back to make their new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. So, as you can probably imagine, on Monday (November 22) — the day Killjoys hit stores — they were in the mood to celebrate. And how did they go about doing that? By buying their album, of course. “Me and Mikey [Way] went and bought it earlier today,” guitarist Frank Iero laughed. “It’s kind of a tradition.” And with their very own copies of the album in hand, MCR headed over to the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard, where they’ll throw a rather raucous album-release party — they set up a carnival and everything — and play a sold-out show for their fanatical MCRmy. (You can watch it too: My Chemical Romance’s “Live From L.A.: Killjoys Make Some Noise” will stream live on MTV.com beginning at 10 p.m. ET.) Outside the building, the mood was already electric, as fans lined up around the block to rush the stage. And inside, the mood was about the same: Guitar techs mashed out chords, stage hands hoisted MCR’s massive “Killjoys” American flag to the rafters, and the guys in the band, well, they were practically buzzing with excitement. They’ve already tested Danger Days out on audiences in Europe and the U.K., but on Monday night, they’ll debut the songs for fans here in the States. And they couldn’t wait to get up on the stage and let it rip. “Usually, there’s an awkward period right before you release a new record … but on this record, or at least these tours, there’s been no awkwardness,” Iero said. “It feels like the material has a place, and there’s an innate feeling where it’s like, ‘Man, it feels like I’ve known this all along.’ ” It’s a feeling MCR haven’t had in a while. They’ve made it through the hard part, and now, rejuvenated by a brand-new album and a renewed sense of purpose, they’re ready to share that feeling with their fans. “It really feels like freedom. I feel like a totally different individual up there, I feel like I’m really myself,” frontman Gerard Way beamed. “I feel like I don’t have a giant sandbag on my back. I feel like, it’s like pulling a mask [off] and showing somebody who you really are. It’s like getting rid of your secret identity.” My Chemical Romance’s “Live From LA: Killjoys Make Some Noise” will stream live on MTV.com beginning at 10 p.m. ET. Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. My Chemical Romance Offer LeBron James ‘Free Tix For Life’ If He Signs With Knicks

MCR guitarist Frank Iero posts offer on Twitter. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero Photo: Gary Miller/ FilmMagic Sure, his good pal Jay-Z may be a part-owner of the New Jersey Nets, and teams like the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers can also offer him pretty sweet deals. But if LeBron James signs with the New York Knicks, he’ll get free My Chemical Romance tickets for life. Yes, in a move sure to anger Cleveland Cavaliers fans — and lift the deflated hopes of Knicks supporters everywhere — MCR guitarist (and Knicks superfan) Frank Iero took to his Twitter account Sunday in an attempt to lure James, who can opt out of his deal with the Cavs this summer, to Madison Square Garden, where he will presumable resurrect the once-proud Knickerbocker franchise and bring them their first championship in nearly 40 years. “I would like to sweeten the deal & offer LeBron free MCR tix for life if he decides to play for the Knicks next year,” , before adding the hashtag

My Chemical Romance’s New Album Is Not Called The Midnight Curfew

Unauthorized biographical DVD about MCR was mistakenly labeled as band’s new LP. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Reprise Over the weekend, My Chemical Romance fans got a bit of a shock when a page on MTV.com appeared, listing both a title and release date for the band’s long-in-the-works new album. According to the page, MCR would return on June 29 with The Midnight Curfew, a new album on a new label: Pride Music. This seemed odd for a number of reasons, chiefly the fact that frontman Gerard Way had recently been tweeting about the title of the album, hinting that he would be announcing it “in a special way this time … maybe some sort of event.” Info about the new album’s title and release date quickly began spreading, until bassist Mikey Way took to his Twitter to defuse the whole thing, writing that “the new album is not titled Midnight Curfew. That is an unauthorized biography DVD that we have nothing to do with. Buyer beware.” And so, it is. The “Curfew” DVD can actually be pre-ordered on Amazon.com right now. So how did “Curfew” end up on MTV.com? Well, data for upcoming releases is automatically pulled from AllMusic.com , which does, in fact, have a page listing for the DVD. MTV News’ e-mails to AllMusic seeking comment were not returned by press time. Digging a little further — using the product code for the DVD listed on AllMusic — it turns out that “Curfew” is being actually being released through Chrome Dreams , a U.K.-based media company that sells biographical books, DVDs and CDs of everyone from Lady Gaga to 50 Cent. Under their “Pride Music” label, they’ve recently released a two-disc “unauthorized” look at the making of Guns ‘N Roses Chinese Democracy album and a retrospective DVD about Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love. By press time, the company has not responded to an e-mail seeking clarification and/or comment about “The Midnight Curfew.” And through all this, we still don’t know the actual title (or release) date for My Chem’s new album. E-mails to MCR’s actual label, Reprise Records, were not returned. Related Artists My Chemical Romance

Deadmau5 Wants To ‘Keep Doing New And Cool Things’

‘I keep setting the bar for myself,’ the ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ dance hitmaker says. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 Photo: MTV News You probably know his music from the promo for “America’s Best Dance Crew” and might even have fallen in love with the sinister sound — but who is behind the infectious beats and anthemic sounds? Meet Deadmau5. Pronounced “dead mouse” and known to his family and friends as Joel Zimmerman, the Canadian born, Grammy-nominated producer is one of the hottest dance acts around, and his headlining appearance at the Winter Music Conference’s Ultra Music Festival in front of 100,000 fans has only further solidified the fact that the Mau5 is here to stay. But who is the man behind the mask that has become so iconic in the dance-music community? “Long story short, a mouse went into my computer and died, and I found him in there when I was changing my video card,” he explained. After word spread on the Internet through various chat rooms and blogs, “everyone just statted calling me ‘that dead mouse guy’ because of he story, and it just stuck. And the 5 was because I couldn’t spell out D-E-A-D-M-O-U-S-E because it was too long to have as a name in the chat room, so I had to trim a character, so I was just like, whatever, and I put a 5 in there and it stuck.” A computer buff turned international dance-music superstar, Deadmau5 has had a rapid rise to success. Just four years ago at Winter Music Conference 2007 he was peddling his CDs and stickers on the street like scores of other DJ and producer hopefuls do each and every year. “It’s incredible to see someone catapult from obscurity to stardom in less than two years,” said David Waxman, longtime DJ and current Ultra Records executive. “He’s taking art to a new level. He’s not just a DJ remixing on the fly, but more of a musician and a producer — he makes it a lot more interesting.” Indeed, Deadmau5 has not only become an icon to the electronic music novice and fanatic alike, but he is also redefining what it means to produce dance music. And his shows have become legendary in the dance-music community, as he works with a lavish intricate array of mixers, MIDI devices and computer software — all while wearing his unmistakable evil “Mau5Head.” With the massive success of “Ghosts N Stuff” from the “ABDC” promo, Deadmau5 insists there’s more to him than that one track. “I’ve just got to keep doing new and cool things and being on par with that, because I really, really don’t want to be this ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ guy, you know what I mean? So I really got to, like, I keep setting the bar for myself and sort of, like, screwing myself because I’m like, ‘Oh man, I’ll never do that again, something on that level,’ and that’s kind of cool because it just pushes me to come up with something like that.” Coming off of a massive year with his smash release For Lack of a Better Name with singles like the aforementioned “Ghosts N Stuff” along with “Strobe” and killer Kaskade collaborations “I Remember” and “Move for Me,” ‘Mau5 has solidified himself as an electronic music star whose frenzied fans have put him on the top of his game, often imitating his signature mau5head. “Dude, I’ve been at some shows and some kids rock out these mau5heads that are better than mine!” he said. However, he’s planning to debut his brand-new, one-of-a-kind mau5head at the upcoming Coachella festival in Indio, California. “It’s just like an HD, LED matrix that’s insanely huge all in a big mau5head, so it’s, like, no longer a mau5head — it’s a compound spherical video surface. It’s the only one in the world!” With his new album on the horizon and set to be released before summer, Deadmau5 assures us he has some surprises in store. Unveiling Tommy Lee as his surprise drummer at Ultra Music Festival at the end of March, who will he pair up with next? “I’m working on my wish list right now and I don’t want to give it away, because I’m working with these artists and everyone knows who they are and everyone is going to go, ‘WHAT!?!?’ but it’ll sound good — don’t worry, it’s not Justin Bieber or anyone crazy!” ‘Mau5 joked. Are you excited to hear Deadmau5’s new album? Let us know in the comments below! When you’re not showing off your moves at the club, stick with MTV News for Dance Music Week. Nicole Scherzinger Brings ‘Slapstick’ To ‘Dancing With The Stars’

‘We’re taking it old school,’ she says of performance plans with partner Derek Hough. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Nicole Scherzinger at her “Dancing with the Stars” rehearsal on Friday Photo: MTV News Last week Nicole Scherzinger scored the highest of all the celebrity dancers on “Dancing With the Stars,” receiving a near-perfect total of 28. When the fans voiced their opinion, it was Shannen Doherty who was voted off the show , leaving Scherzinger to dance another week. So what should fans expect to see when they tune in this week? “We had the quick step. We decided to take a risk and do something that we wanted to do on our own,” Scherzinger told MTV News recently about her partner’s strategy. “We’re not really playing by the rules necessarily.” Scherzinger and dance partner Derek Hough plan to try out some more unconventional dance moves with a routine that will be anything but strictly ballroom. “We’re taking it old school. We’re going back to the basics of, like, sheer entertainment and being performers, kind of like slapstick comedy,” she shared. “And [we’re] just having a good time. I don’t know if the judges are gonna necessarily like it so much. We’ll see.” The Pussycat Doll is used to all the hard work thanks to her strenuous pop-star schedule, but her “DWTS” routines are definitely the hardest thing she’s had to do in a long while. “I didn’t anticipate, honestly, that it was going to be so challenging,” she said. “I’m used to hard work, being on tour with the Pussycat Dolls and going non-stop, but this style of dance is so foreign to my body. It’s quite frustrating at times.” Are you looking forward to seeing Nicole and Derek perform again on “Dancing With the Stars”? Tell us in the comments below! Cobra Starship Recap MTV’s Musical March Madness Tournament

Who will win the championship: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? By James Montgomery Cobra Starship’s Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton Photo: MTV News You could call MTV’s Musical March Madness many things (and, in light of Tokio Hotel’s Final Four ousting, their fans already are), but “predictable” is not one of them. This was, after all, a tournament determined entirely by your votes, which meant that, really, anything was possible — a fact we quickly realized when three of the four #1 seeds lost in the opening round (and the fourth lost in the second ). It was a tournament defined by upsets and run by underdogs, be they the Hold Steady or Panic! at the Disco, Patrick Stump or Alice in Chains — or, most notably, Tokio and Coheed and Cambria, two bands who were basically tossed into the tournament at the last minute and made it to the Final Four. In Coheed’s case, they made it all the way to the championship game, where they’ll face off against My Chemical Romance — you know, a band that hasn’t released a new album in, like, four years and is currently without a drummer . Basically, this whole thing made absolutely zero sense. Watching it unfold was a total blast, but attempting to recap the whole thing has seemed nearly impossible. That’s why we turned to a pair of sportscasting legends who know a thing or two about pulling off the impossible — CSPN analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — to do the recapping for us. (And yes, we’re aware they look very much like Cobra Starship ‘s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez; we’ll just chalk that up to a coincidence.) With Newsroom blog, we figured now would be a pretty good time to roll out Bagwell and Twice’s tournament recap. Watch it while you vote. Perhaps it will help sway you one way or the other (that Dick is a persuasive guy — trust us). We’ll crown our Musical March Madness champion on Wednesday. Who are you pulling for in the championship game: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? Let us know in the comments below! And make your vote count by hitting the Newsroom blog . MTV’s Musical March Madness Final Four Preview: My Chemical Romance

After a hard-won victory over 30 Seconds to Mars, MCR face Muse in the Final Four. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Chapman Baehler/Getty Images/MTV News Who : The last band standing in the certifiably wild West region in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament , My Chemical Romance have to be considered the favorites to win it all at this point, based on the bands they’ve bested and the help they’re getting from their friends in 30 Seconds to Mars (more on that in a bit). Up until the departure of drummer Bob Bryar , My Chem were one of the few bands in the tournament who could field an actual basketball team (there were five of them) but even when playing a man down, they’re a formidable squad, with the Way brothers running the show from the guard positions, Frank Iero scoring from the wing, and the indomitable inside presence of Ray Toro. Dude can totally dunk. How They Got Here : My Chem’s tournament was really a story of two halves — everything leading up to their Sweet 16 tilt against 30 Seconds to Mars and everything after it. MCR entered the field as a #5 seed and bounced opening-round opponent Gorillaz with relative ease. In the second round, they were pitted against formidable #4 seed Pearl Jam, and to the surprise of pretty much everyone, they positively rolled them, winning 63-37. That set up the now legendary Sweet 16 bloodfest against 30STM, a battle of bands with unyielding, fervent fanbases (the MCRmy and the Echelon, respectively). It was a back-and-forth affair, and in a fitting twist, it ended up tied, with each band grabbing 50 percent of the vote. After more than 50,000 ballots were counted, MCR were declared the winners (by a scant 327 votes). Though defeated, 30STM threw their support behind My Chem, which resulted in them absolutely destroying Panic! at the Disco in the Elite Eight. The Outlook : With the power of 30 Seconds to Mars behind them — not to mention the might of the MCRmy — there’s really no stopping My Chemical Romance, and a trip to the championship game seems a mere formality at this point. It almost doesn’t matter that they haven’t released a note of new music in more than a year or that their still-untitled fourth album has been in the works for nearly as long (or that they might not have a drummer right now). MCR are balanced, determined and tournament-tested. They’ll face off against Muse in the Final Four and, call us bandwagon-jumpers, but we like their chances. Throughout the day, we’ll be breaking down the four bands still standing in MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. Voting on the Final Four opens Friday (April 2) on the Newsroom blog and runs until Sunday night. Related Photos Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! MTV’s Musical March Madness: Presenting The Final Four!

Muse, My Chemical Romance, Tokio Hotel and Coheed and Cambria face off in the semi-finals. By Kyle Anderson Muse’s Matthew Bellamy Photo: Bradley Kanaris/ Getty Images The NCAA basketball tournament heads into its Final Four games on Saturday, which means it’s only appropriate that MTV News’ Musical March Madness tournament also holds its two semi-finals this weekend. The Elite Eight round was aggressive and intense, full of comebacks and near-misses. While no matchup came close to the My Chemical Romance/ 30 Seconds to Mars showdown in the Sweet 16, as far as last-second intensity goes, there were still four well-fought games worthy of their inclusion this deep in the tournament. MTV News’ Band Bracketology In the end, nearly 100,000 votes were cast in 48 hours for the four polls. Who advanced to the Final Four? Check out the updated bracket here and head over to the Newsroom blog to start voting in the Final Four round on Friday. One note about the voting from here on out: The results will remain secret until the winners are revealed, so you won’t be able to keep track of the percentages as you vote. But fear not! We have some surprises in store for the reveals next week. Midwest The White Stripes had one of the more unlikely runs in this year’s tournament, as they were one of the few participating groups who don’t technically exist at the moment. Still, the enthusiasm for Jack White’s oeuvre carried them past the likes of OK Go and Patrick Stump. But the bucked stopped in the Elite Eight for Jack and Meg, as Muse continued their dominance for the victory. They’ve established themselves as the Duke of this bracket — the high-seeded team that used fundamentals to push their way up. The results: (2) Muse def. (4) The White Stripes, 69-31 West The Wild West has been by far the most action-packed bracket, with a number of close calls and nail-biting finishes. So, it was a little bit surprising that My Chemical Romance took down the surging Panic! at the Disco so handily. After besting the likes of Gorillaz, Pearl Jam and 30 Seconds to Mars in games decided by razor-thin margins, the fans of My Chemical Romance (aided by a pact with 30 Seconds to Mars enthusiasts) pushed their favorite band past Panic! and into the Final Four. The results: (5) My Chemical Romance def. (15) Panic! at the Disco, 69-31 That sets up Muse and My Chemical Romance in the Final Four. Which rock powerhouse will find themselves in the finals? East Tokio Hotel have pounded their way through this tournament by eviscerating titans like Coldplay and Radiohead, but Owl City didn’t show up just to roll over. They actually jumped out to an early lead before getting overwhelmed by the German juggernaut. It remains the closest round that Tokio Hotel have had, though it still seemed inevitable that they would advance to the Final Four. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def (3) Owl City, 58-42 South The South bracket has been Thunderdome since jump street, with underdogs like Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Creed and Coheed and Cambria dominating more mainstream acts like Nick Jonas, Adam Lambert and top overall seed Kings of Leon. In the end, the South was being Coheed and Cambria’s world, as they pounded Alice in Chains in the Elite Eight’s most lopsided finish. The results: (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (13) Alice in Chains, 74-26 That creates an incredible Final Four showdown between Tokio Hotel and Coheed and Cambria. Both groups have scorched the earth on their way here, but only one can make it to the finals. Voting opens soon at the MTV Newsroom blog and will stay open until Sunday at 10 p.m. ET. We’ll reveal the finals on Monday, when a champion will be decided. Happy voting! Related Photos Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?!
