MTV’s Musical March Madness: The Champion Is …

Coheed and Cambria upset My Chemical Romance to win MTV’s Band Bracketology crown! By James Montgomery Coheed and Cambria Photo: Sony/Getty Images/MTV News It’s all over but the shouting, and there’s probably going to be a whole lot of that. The title game of MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament is in the books, and in an upset of colossal proportions, 15th-seeded Coheed and Cambria knocked off #5 My Chemical Romance to claim the championship. In a contest that saw more than 120,000 votes cast (from 149 different countries — shout out to our voter in Tajikistan!), C&C did what Butler couldn’t against Duke in Monday night’s NCAA basketball finale, belting heavily favored MCR 67-33 (83,078 votes to 40,290) to win one for underdogs everywhere. And now, their names will be forever etched on the MTV Musical March Madness trophy! It was a fairly convincing victory for the guys in Coheed, but, as is the case with most great match-ups, the championship tilt wasn’t without some controversy. Voting for the finals opened Monday on the Newsroom blog , and though things remained close overnight, C&C surged to a huge lead in the early hours of Tuesday, which raised our suspicions a tad. So we did some digging in our poll software and discovered that some rather overzealous Coheed fans (and, to a lesser extent, some MCR ones too) had employed bots to juice up the polling numbers — seriously, when one IP address votes 4,576 times for Coheed and Cambria, you know something’s amiss. So we plowed through the results, removed any and all suspicious IP addresses, and Coheed was still winning — by a lot. Still, MCR made a late surge, but in the end, C&C’s lead was too insurmountable to overcome. And just to make sure the final results were legit, we did another round of IP pruning Wednesday morning. What can we say? We take our tournament seriously, and would hate to have its legacy ruined by salacious cheaters. But now is not the time to tarnish Coheed’s victory, or the efforts of the 64 other bands — and their fanbases — that voted in the tournament. Thanks to everyone who participated (well, except the bots), and special thanks to Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — who do bear a striking resemblance Cobra Starship’s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez — for their genius recap of MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament on Monday. It’s been a blast to watch unfold, and we’re definitely going to do it again next year. Oh, and when we do, we’re pretty sure Coheed will be seeded a lot higher than #15 — that’s just one of the perks of being crowned champion. Congrats guys, enjoy the tickertape parade. And come get your trophy — it’s here, waiting for you! What do you think of Coheed’s big win? Who would you like to see take the crown in next year’s tournament? Let us know in the comments below! Nicole Scherzinger Brings ‘Slapstick’ To ‘Dancing With The Stars’

‘We’re taking it old school,’ she says of performance plans with partner Derek Hough. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Nicole Scherzinger at her “Dancing with the Stars” rehearsal on Friday Photo: MTV News Last week Nicole Scherzinger scored the highest of all the celebrity dancers on “Dancing With the Stars,” receiving a near-perfect total of 28. When the fans voiced their opinion, it was Shannen Doherty who was voted off the show , leaving Scherzinger to dance another week. So what should fans expect to see when they tune in this week? “We had the quick step. We decided to take a risk and do something that we wanted to do on our own,” Scherzinger told MTV News recently about her partner’s strategy. “We’re not really playing by the rules necessarily.” Scherzinger and dance partner Derek Hough plan to try out some more unconventional dance moves with a routine that will be anything but strictly ballroom. “We’re taking it old school. We’re going back to the basics of, like, sheer entertainment and being performers, kind of like slapstick comedy,” she shared. “And [we’re] just having a good time. I don’t know if the judges are gonna necessarily like it so much. We’ll see.” The Pussycat Doll is used to all the hard work thanks to her strenuous pop-star schedule, but her “DWTS” routines are definitely the hardest thing she’s had to do in a long while. “I didn’t anticipate, honestly, that it was going to be so challenging,” she said. “I’m used to hard work, being on tour with the Pussycat Dolls and going non-stop, but this style of dance is so foreign to my body. It’s quite frustrating at times.” Are you looking forward to seeing Nicole and Derek perform again on “Dancing With the Stars”? Tell us in the comments below! Cobra Starship Recap MTV’s Musical March Madness Tournament

Who will win the championship: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? By James Montgomery Cobra Starship’s Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton Photo: MTV News You could call MTV’s Musical March Madness many things (and, in light of Tokio Hotel’s Final Four ousting, their fans already are), but “predictable” is not one of them. This was, after all, a tournament determined entirely by your votes, which meant that, really, anything was possible — a fact we quickly realized when three of the four #1 seeds lost in the opening round (and the fourth lost in the second ). It was a tournament defined by upsets and run by underdogs, be they the Hold Steady or Panic! at the Disco, Patrick Stump or Alice in Chains — or, most notably, Tokio and Coheed and Cambria, two bands who were basically tossed into the tournament at the last minute and made it to the Final Four. In Coheed’s case, they made it all the way to the championship game, where they’ll face off against My Chemical Romance — you know, a band that hasn’t released a new album in, like, four years and is currently without a drummer . Basically, this whole thing made absolutely zero sense. Watching it unfold was a total blast, but attempting to recap the whole thing has seemed nearly impossible. That’s why we turned to a pair of sportscasting legends who know a thing or two about pulling off the impossible — CSPN analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — to do the recapping for us. (And yes, we’re aware they look very much like Cobra Starship ‘s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez; we’ll just chalk that up to a coincidence.) With Newsroom blog, we figured now would be a pretty good time to roll out Bagwell and Twice’s tournament recap. Watch it while you vote. Perhaps it will help sway you one way or the other (that Dick is a persuasive guy — trust us). We’ll crown our Musical March Madness champion on Wednesday. Who are you pulling for in the championship game: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? Let us know in the comments below! And make your vote count by hitting the Newsroom blog . MTV’s Musical March Madness: Championship Matchup Revealed!

It’s My Chemical Romance vs. Coheed and Cambria For the championship of MTV’s Band Bracketology! Winner will be revealed Wednesday! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News Well, it’s come down to this. After hundreds of thousands of votes, 65 teams, 20 days and 5 rounds, we’ve reached the championship game of MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament. There have been shocking upsets, overtime thrillers and even accusations of voter fraud, all of which is going to make for one heck of a “One Shining Moment” montage . We plowed through regions, busted brackets, whittled our list down to a Terrific 32, a Sweet 16, an Elite 8 and a Final Four . And now, there are just two bands standing. Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! So who are they? Well, before we unveil the two acts who will battle it out for the March Madness crown, let’s take a look back at the Final Four, which pitted #2 Muse (champions of the Midwest region) against #5 My Chemical Romance (champs of the West) in one semifinal, and #15 Coheed and Cambria (the unstoppable champions of the South) against #16 Tokio Hotel (the unlikely champions of the East) in the other. Both looked like they’d be hotly contested matchups on paper, but as it turned out, neither of them was particularly close (sort of like Duke/West Virginia). You can take a look at the updated bracket here . Voting on the championship game begins Monday (April 5) afternoon on the Newsroom blog and will run until Tuesday night. On Wednesday, we’ll unveil our champion. And much like Final Four voting, results will remain secret until the champ is crowned, so you won’t be able to keep track of the percentages as you vote. (This is what we in the business call building suspense. ) Anyway, who will be playing in the championship game?!? Why, none other than My Chemical Romance and Coheed and Cambria. And judging by both band’s performances up to this point, our title game is gonna be a doozy. My Chem got to the championship by hammering Muse in the semifinal, winning 69-31, getting balanced scoring from the Way brothers and a triple-double from guitarist Ray Toro, who abused Muse’s Christopher Wolstenholme in the low post. Thanks to the fanatical support of their MCRmy, My Chem have knocked off not only Muse, but upstarts Panic! at the Disco, tournament favorites 30 Seconds to Mars, the mighty Pearl Jam and the upset-minded Gorillaz, and now they stand on the precipice of claiming their first-ever championship. Of course, it’s not going to be easy, because standing in their way are Coheed and Cambria, who may be unstoppable at this point (they are definitely the Duke to MCR’s Butler), especially after C&C mauled Tokio Hotel in the semifinal, winning 62-38 (the actual numbers were 30,788 votes to 18,491.) And yes, we’re aware that there were some, uh, shenanigans being employed by Coheed fans, but they don’t seem to have overly skewed the results, so Coheed move on! (Take heart, Tokio fanatics, the band’s defeat will not be in vain: We’re going to safeguard finals voting against any further chicanery using top-secret technology.) So who will come out on top in our Musical March Madness championship game, My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? The MCRmy or the Children of the Fence? It’s going to be one for the ages, for certain. So get your voting fingers ready, polls open Monday afternoon on the Newsroom blog … on Wednesday, only one band will be left standing.

MTV’s Musical March Madness: Presenting The Final Four!

Muse, My Chemical Romance, Tokio Hotel and Coheed and Cambria face off in the semi-finals. By Kyle Anderson Muse’s Matthew Bellamy Photo: Bradley Kanaris/ Getty Images The NCAA basketball tournament heads into its Final Four games on Saturday, which means it’s only appropriate that MTV News’ Musical March Madness tournament also holds its two semi-finals this weekend. The Elite Eight round was aggressive and intense, full of comebacks and near-misses. While no matchup came close to the My Chemical Romance/ 30 Seconds to Mars showdown in the Sweet 16, as far as last-second intensity goes, there were still four well-fought games worthy of their inclusion this deep in the tournament. MTV News’ Band Bracketology In the end, nearly 100,000 votes were cast in 48 hours for the four polls. Who advanced to the Final Four? Check out the updated bracket here and head over to the Newsroom blog to start voting in the Final Four round on Friday. One note about the voting from here on out: The results will remain secret until the winners are revealed, so you won’t be able to keep track of the percentages as you vote. But fear not! We have some surprises in store for the reveals next week. Midwest The White Stripes had one of the more unlikely runs in this year’s tournament, as they were one of the few participating groups who don’t technically exist at the moment. Still, the enthusiasm for Jack White’s oeuvre carried them past the likes of OK Go and Patrick Stump. But the bucked stopped in the Elite Eight for Jack and Meg, as Muse continued their dominance for the victory. They’ve established themselves as the Duke of this bracket — the high-seeded team that used fundamentals to push their way up. The results: (2) Muse def. (4) The White Stripes, 69-31 West The Wild West has been by far the most action-packed bracket, with a number of close calls and nail-biting finishes. So, it was a little bit surprising that My Chemical Romance took down the surging Panic! at the Disco so handily. After besting the likes of Gorillaz, Pearl Jam and 30 Seconds to Mars in games decided by razor-thin margins, the fans of My Chemical Romance (aided by a pact with 30 Seconds to Mars enthusiasts) pushed their favorite band past Panic! and into the Final Four. The results: (5) My Chemical Romance def. (15) Panic! at the Disco, 69-31 That sets up Muse and My Chemical Romance in the Final Four. Which rock powerhouse will find themselves in the finals? East Tokio Hotel have pounded their way through this tournament by eviscerating titans like Coldplay and Radiohead, but Owl City didn’t show up just to roll over. They actually jumped out to an early lead before getting overwhelmed by the German juggernaut. It remains the closest round that Tokio Hotel have had, though it still seemed inevitable that they would advance to the Final Four. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def (3) Owl City, 58-42 South The South bracket has been Thunderdome since jump street, with underdogs like Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Creed and Coheed and Cambria dominating more mainstream acts like Nick Jonas, Adam Lambert and top overall seed Kings of Leon. In the end, the South was being Coheed and Cambria’s world, as they pounded Alice in Chains in the Elite Eight’s most lopsided finish. The results: (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (13) Alice in Chains, 74-26 That creates an incredible Final Four showdown between Tokio Hotel and Coheed and Cambria. Both groups have scorched the earth on their way here, but only one can make it to the finals. Voting opens soon at the MTV Newsroom blog and will stay open until Sunday at 10 p.m. ET. We’ll reveal the finals on Monday, when a champion will be decided. Happy voting! Related Photos Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?!
