‘If you are serious about the meeting, I want Randy’s Donuts, swivel chairs and a megaphone,’ Tyler, the Creator tells record exec. By Alvin Blanco Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Los Angeles’ OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) are one of the most lauded and debated acts in hip-hop today. Being a hot commodity has granted the collective the luxury of having music executives seek out their services, and Odd Future have in turn conceived some odd requests in order to gain their audience. Odd Future is asking record label execs to meet with them to discuss business at the Supreme skate shop in Fairfax, California, according to the New York Post . SRC Records founder Steve Rifkind was able to get them to his office but allegedly only after acquiescing to Odd Future mouthpiece Tyler, the Creator’s demands. “If you are serious about the meeting, I want Randy’s Donuts, swivel chairs and a megaphone,” Tyler reportedly told Rifkind. It was also revealed that Bad Boy Records head honcho Sean “Diddy” Combs was the one who set up the meeting between Justin Bieber and one of his biggest fans, Tyler, the Creator . Although Tyler has signed a one-album deal with XL Recording and MellowHype is having the album BlackendWhite formally released by Fat Possum Records, Odd Future itself is still unsigned. Some of the other major rap industry players trying to earn Odd Future’s services include Interscope/ Geffen/ A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine, who signed Eminem, and Jay-Z, who signed Rihanna to Def Jam while he was the label’s president and whose Roc Nation is currently home to Jay Electronica and Willow Smith. Jay-Z met with Odd Future during the South by Southwest Festival — over tacos — and left quite an impression. “It was hard for me to look at Jay-Z for 10 minutes. Like, real sh–, this is the godfather of music,” MellowHype’s Hodgy Beats told MTV News. “I just shook his hand in his house. Honestly, it made me want to work harder. Jay-Z is amazing.” Related Videos The Wonderful Adventures Of Odd Future At SXSW 2011 Related Artists Odd Future Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Diddy
The teenagers of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All , or Odd Future for short (or OFWGKTA to get really lazy) have landed on the cover of Billboard Magazine, officially signaling to their fans that the secret is out. The cover is a major feat for a group of kids who have only released their music for free on the internet, and rap about the most depraved subjects sans apology. Top 9 Music Videos Of The 2000s Top 9 Music Videos Of The 1990s The group officially went from internet phenomenon to industry darlings after their February appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon where group members Tyler The Creator and Hodgy Beats ran around the set performing the song “Sandwitches.” In a recent interview with AlLindstrom.com , SRC Records founder Steve Rifkind, aka the man who signed the Wu-Tang Clan, Big Pun and Mobb Deep, has his eyes fixed on the group right now. “Somebody called me today and said you’ve got to sign [OFWGKTA],” he said. “And then you guys bring them up to me just now…I saw some videos for the first time this morning and I saw when they did the Jimmy Fallon show, I’m going after them hard. I think they’re brilliant. I don’t anything a comparison about Wu-Tang. I can see maybe because the music is just so raw, but what I saw I just fell in love with.” OFWGKTA’s de facto leader Tyler The Creator recently signed a one-off album deal with XL Recordings for the release of his forthcoming solo album, Goblin . Group member Mellow Hype has also signed a deal with independent label Fat Possum Records. OFWGKTA will be performing at Billboard’s showcase at this year’s SXSW festival in Texas. And ever since the video kicked off the new decade , the song’s hook has been on repeat on radio.
The ‘It Kills Me’ singer from Toronto is breaking though on Hip-Hop and R&B Week. By Steven Roberts Melanie Fiona Photo: Michele Crow Melanie Fiona didn’t bring home the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy for her soulful ballad “It Kills Me” this past weekend, but her nod in that category seems like a sign that she’s poised for great things ahead. The song has been the #1 R&B/Hip-Hop record for the last four weeks, and she’s currently on tour with Alicia Keys — all of which makes her a safe bet as one of MTV News’ breakthrough artists of 2010
