Jesse Helt, Miley Cyrus’ VMA Date, Sentenced to 6 Months in Jail

Jesse Helt is making like Teresa Giudice : The young man – who made headlines in August for accompanying Miley Cyrus to the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards and even giving a speech on her behalf – is headed to prison. The 22-year old received a six-month jail sentence yesterday for violating his probation, according to NBC News. Jesse Helt Surrenders to Police Helt accepted Miley’s Video of the Year trophy at the aforementioned event and then went on to tell viewers about the plight of homeless individuals such as himself. Cyrus later took to social media to explain that she was trying to use her fame for good, as she and Helt helped raised over $200,000 for a homeless shelter in Los Angeles through their stunt. But Miley received criticism from critics who claimed she was simply exploiting Helt, while it eventually came out that Helt wasn’t actually homeless. To make matters worse, the public then learned that several warrants were out for Helt’s arrest , ranging in seriousness from burglary to criminal mischief. Helt turned himself in to police not long afterward and was permitted to speak on his own behalf in court on Tuesday. He told a judge that he’d “like to be viewed as a good person.” Judge Monte Campbell, however, cited continuing probation violations as the reason to revoke his probation and send him to jail. Helt was credited with 57 days served. At the VMAs, his speech did manage to make folks aware of the issue of poverty in America, as Helt told the millions watching at home: “My name is Jesse, and I’m accepting this award on behalf of 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth who are starving lost and scared right now. I know this because I am one of these people. I have survived in shelters all over this city…Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight.” 2014 MTV VMAs in GIFs! 1. Obama Tax Rate Falls to 18.4 Percent in 2012

U.S. President Barack Obama paid an effective federal tax rate of 18.4 percent in 2012, down a bit from the year before, when he earned more money. The President and Michelle Obama reported adjusted gross income of $608,611 last year, a drop from $789,674 in 2011, and paid $112,214 in total taxes. That came out to an effective 18.4 percent rate , compared to $162,074 in taxes paid, or 22 percent of their $844,585 income the previous year. Times are tough for book sales! The Obamas’ income consists of his salary as President and royalties from his two books, which have fallen greatly from his pre-White House days. He reported earnings in the seven figures as recently as 2009. Last year, Barack and Michelle Obama reported giving $150,034 to various charities, representing roughly 25 percent of their adjusted gross income. Their largest gift was $103,871 to the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that provides housing for military families near military hospitals. In addition encouraging healthy lifestyles among youth, Michelle Obama has made supporting the military one of her top public causes as first lady. Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, reported adjusted gross income of $385,072 and paid $87,851 in total federal taxes last year.  Obama has pressed for wealthy people such as himself to pay a greater share in income taxes, and made this a major issue during the 2012 election . GOP opponent Mitt Romney , a wealthy former private equity exec who had an effective tax rate of 14.1 in 2011, became a campaign poster boy. Effective tax rates will vary wildly from one taxpayer to another because of the many tax breaks available, but average just 11.8 percent nationally. Of course, this figure is also skewed. In 2011, research shows that 46 percent of Americans paid no federal income tax at all, most of them because they were poor, elderly or unemployed. This places a disproportionate burden on earners, conservatives argue in opposition to Obama’s proposal, saying they are taxed enough as it is. Incidentally, in 2012, the Obamas overpaid their taxes, entitling them to a refund of $16,815. They chose to apply that total to their 2013 estimated tax.  Smart accounting.

Henican On Mosque: Pundits Shouldn’t Be As ‘Ignorant’ As Other Americans

Talk about your teachable moments, the Ground Zero mosque controversy has taught us in just what contempt many in the liberal media hold their fellow Americans. As I noted here , last week on MSNBC, Cenk Uygur accused Americans who oppose the mosque of being “ignorant.”  This weekend on Fox News Watch, Ellis Henican also used the i-word, saying that when it comes to the mosque, pundits shouldn’t be as “ignorant” as other Americans. Jim Pinkerton pounced, pointing out the condescension of which Henican had convicted himself. Henican had opened the mosque segment by saying that those such as himself who live in lower Manhattan are more receptive to the mosque than people who live farther away, speculating that in Idaho are 99% against it. Later came this exchange . . . JIM PINKERTON: This whole exercise, for the media, let’s just focus on the pundit sector.  It’s been a chance for them to demonstrate their moral superiority over the average American by taking this “enlightened,” multi-cultural position. ELLIS HENICAN: At the risk, Jim, of sounding enlightened, it is not the role of us in the punditocracy to be as quickly as ignorant as the least ignorant [sic, presumably meant “most ignorant”] member of the public. There are some complex principles here that don’t get played out easily in a left-right angry exchange on cable television, and I think frankly we have some responsibility to remember what those principles are. PINKERTON: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the defendant has just convicted himself. HENICAN: Of enlightenment! I plead guilty as charged, sir.     Note: This week’s News Watch was quite the treasure trove.  Brad Wilmouth earlier noted the shout-out Pinkerton gave Tim Graham for his observation of the way the New York Times buried the news of the Justic Department’s dropping of its investigation of Tom DeLay, and Noel Sheppard reported the way Rich Lowry aced  Henican regarding the liberal media’s coverage of the Iraq war.
