Nicki Minaj’s Swagger And Skills Make Her A Prime ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’ Candidate

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010′ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: Johnny Nunez/ Getty Images “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” Candidate: Nicki Minaj Nicki Minaj is in the running for MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” because of her massive attack — not her single of the same name , which came out earlier this year and has a big-budgeted video full of eye candy. Minaj’s appeal is about more than one song, more than one type of flow, more than one genre of music, even more than one gender. Her charisma and versatility have made her today’s face of female rap, but her appeal is universal. The Young Money MC has an army of female supporters she calls her “Harajuku Barbies” that are enthralled with her style and persona. The guys love her audacity and precision on the mic as well as her beauty. From Southside Queens to Down South in Atlanta, the New York native credits grinding down-bottom with helping to make her one of the most versatile MCs in the game right now. “[Lil] Wayne liked me,” Minaj told MTV’s “Sucker Free” backstage in Boston earlier this year. “He saw me on [“The Come Up”] DVD and he wanted a female for Young Money. I moved to Atlanta, me and Gucci [Mane] started working crazy. People started thinking I was a Down South girl. I feel more diverse because I did that — because I’m not a rapper that just stayed in Jamaica, Queens. It was a great thing. “Sometimes people see the glitz and the glamour. That’s why they envy you,” she added. “They don’t see three, four, five years ago. They don’t see when I was selling my mixtape for two dollars on Jamaica Avenue [in Queens]. They don’t see when I couldn’t get New York DJs — I lived in New York my whole life — to even play a song. At the end of the day, it’s all about hard work. You clearly see that hard work; that’s all it takes. If you really want it, direct your energy on positive sh– and it will happen.” She’s laced dozens of guest spots along preeminent spitters such as Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, Ludacris, Jadakiss, and of course her Young Family members, and just like her skills on the mic, Nick’s work ethic can’t be questioned. She’s a fashion icon, a sex symbol, she appeals to men and women and she has a huge fan base. The only thing she’s lacking at this point is a debut LP. “I am still hungry,” Minaj, who says her main goal this summer is to sit in the studio and complete that album, said with a smile. “I’m not hungry in monetary way, I’m hungry like I wanna feel what its like to have 10 albums under my belt. I think when you’re a perfectionist — when you are an artist, you want to be great at your craft — sometimes it’s not about money. I feel like I’m still a new artist, I still gotta prove myself, I still have to prove myself to me that I can do this. The features are great — I thank all the artists that gave time, the opportunity to feature with them. But I’m Nicki Minaj, I’m capable of doing what they do. I just wanna get out here and prove it. The album is coming soon. Its something I can’t date. I’m not rushing it. The album will come when it’s ready, in its natural time.” Nicki and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Drake, Nicki Minaj Open Up About His ‘Crush’ On Her

Drake says the MCs have a ‘playful relationship.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj and Drake Photo: Young Money/Cash Money Young Money stars Nicki Minaj and Drake are two of the hottest MCs in hip-hop, and their relationship has some thinking that the pair are hooking up in ways beyond a label affiliation. The stars were candid about their feelings for each other in recent interviews with MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown” — and addressed rumors that their relationship isn’t strictly platonic. “Me and Nicki have a really playful relationship,” Drake told DJ Envy. “When I was on tour … I saw Nicki for the first time and, like, literally fell in love. She had this snap-back hat on that said ‘Minaj.’ She used to wear that every single day. She was like a theater student and she was so cold at rapping.” Drake — who rushed to Minaj’s defense last week after Lil’ Kim said some untoward things about her — said that before breaking through, he had to contend with her somewhat icy demeanor. “I remember one of the first nights that we were out in Miami and I went to Jerry’s [Famous Deli]. I was like [to Minaj], ‘You want food, you hungry?,’ and she was like, ‘Yeah, I want some food.’ I was like, ‘I’m in, we gon’ eat food together.’ I came to her door and she took the food and shut the door in my face! I was just like, ‘Man, this is gonna be a long road for us.’ ” But Drake maintains that his feelings for her have always been genuine. “I’ve always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she’s always just looked at me as, like, her little brother.” Envy pointed to a line on the track “Miss Me” from Drake’s Thank Me Later LP — which is released Tuesday — where he says he wants to put a ring on it as proof of his true feelings for Minaj. “I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I’d admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we f—ing did it/ And girl, I’m f—ing serious/ I’m with it if you with it/ ‘Cause your verses turn me on and your pants are mighty fitted,” Drake spits. But Drizzy insisted the lyric is not that deep. “That line on the album is just me playing with her. I’ll be playing with her for years until she’s ready to go, and then I’m ready,” he added. For her part, Minaj shrugged off any notion that she and the Young Money heartthrob are more than friends. She giggled when Envy broached the subject but then immediately shut down rumors. “Drake does not have a crush on me,” Minaj assured Envy. When Envy brought up the “Miss Me” lyric, Minaj responded, “Drake knows how to get you guys’ attention.” As one of the most sought-after MCs in the game right now, Minaj is probably getting stepped to all the time. But when Envy asked how dudes should approach the diva, she dismissed the idea of a relationship. “I don’t want to be hollered at right now. I just don’t. I wanna go and hibernate and coop up somewhere and be alone,” said Minaj, adding that she’s waiting until after her debut hits shelves before she gets scooped up. “Then maybe we can talk.” Catch more Nicki Minaj with DJ Envy on the “Sucker Free Summer Countdown” from Boston’s 94.5 Summer Jam, this Sunday, June 20, at noon ET only on MTV2. Drake ‘Didn’t Respect’ Lil’ Kim Dissing Nicki Minaj

‘That just wasn’t G to me at all,’ he tells MTV’s ‘Sucker Free’ of Kim’s onstage comments. By Shaheem Reid Drake and Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Drake said that, even without an album, Nicki Minaj is the best female MC to ever do it. So the 23-year-old MC was pretty ticked off at Lil’ Kim and Ray J’s recent onstage comments that Minaj is biting Kim’s style and that Nicki needs to pay homage to her. Drake elaborated on his anger while talking to DJ Envy on MTV’s “Sucker Free” over the weekend. “I feel like Lil’ Kim is a G in the game. I feel like you’re a part of an era that’s classic, that we’ll never forget as young kids, me and Nick,” he said of his Young Money family member. “You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to get onstage and tell people to pay homage; that’s a given. I’ve watched Nicki pay homage time and time again. I didn’t respect [Kim’s comments] at all. Whoever else was onstage with her, I didn’t respect that at all. You just wearing your heat on your sleeve. You’re showing that you’re upset. Nobody’s done that to me yet. I would never expect Jay or ‘Ye to get onstage and be like, ‘Pay homage to me. You need to respect me.’ They know they command my respect with their music and talent. I feel that’s signs you’re just losing it. I really did take that personally. That bothered me. I really don’t get caught up with the Twitter and Internet stuff, but I did see it. And I feel like you’re supposed to be a G. That just wasn’t G to me at all.” For her part, Lil’ Kim told Philadelphia radio host Kendra G on Philly 100.3 on Saturday that “all females that come in the game, we need to stick together, and I always try my best to embrace them. But what happens is, when they come in the game and they realize that I’m not going away, and my fans are still here and they can’t just step on me, they get upset, and then they don’t want to be my friend anymore. I think that’s really childish and stupid. Because all I ask for is respect, and I show the same respect back. Pay homage. At the end of the day, a lot of things go on behind the scenes that people don’t know about. It will be aired out, because you can’t hide the truth.” Nicki hasn’t spoken in public about Kim’s comments, but she has hinted on her Twitter page that she is taking the high road. “Raise ya hand if u don’t have 2 diss ppl to feel better about urself,” she wrote on Thursday. “Jealousy is a disease. It kills @ a fast pace. Kisses 2 my bad bi—es” Do you think Lil’ Kim was out of line in her comments to Nicki Minaj? Let us know below! Related Artists Nicki Minaj Drake

Nicki Minaj Calls Lil Wayne’s Jail Time ‘An Emotional Roller Coaster’

‘We wouldn’t wish it on any crew in the game,’ she says at mtvU Spring Break. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj Photo: Johnny Nunez/ Getty Images It’s been a trying time for the Young Money camp since Lil Wayne began his yearlong prison bid. The rapper’s sentencing and subsequent jail stint were delayed numerous times before he finally entered New York’s Rikers Island. Nicki Minaj called the experience “confusing.” “His actual time to go in had been changing, up and down,” she said during mtvU Spring Break. “So it’s been an emotional roller coaster for all of us involved because we never knew when the last text message or that last hug was the actual last text message or hug. It was very, very strange. We wouldn’t wish it on any crew in the game.” Lil Wayne took advantage of the additional time he was afforded to shoot more videos — he shot nearly 20 clips leading up to his imprisonment — and to make a guest appearance during Young Jeezy’s set on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour stop in New York. While Wayne is away, his team has pledged to keep the YM torch scorching hot. Drake vowed to take the lead in Wayne’s absence. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song [‘Over’]: keep us afloat till he gets back,” he told MTV News. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Minaj described the unusual circumstances that led to her, Drake and the rest of the Young Money crew appearing at mtvU Spring Break without Lil Wayne. Last year, Wayne was a part of the festivities, which also included performances by Jim Jones, Asher Roth and Kid Cudi. He brought Drake and Nicki along as guests during his set. Now, it’s their turn to apply the lessons Wayne taught them, Nicki said. “We remember last year being at MTV Spring Break, and Wayne was obviously the headliner,” she recalled. “He’s so much more than a headliner, he’s a person that I look at, and I can’t believe this guy is still going, after 20 to 30 minutes in the hot sun. To not have him here, it’s like a life lesson for all of us — always work as if we have no one else to depend on — and that’s what he teaches us. He did, like, 1,000 videos before he went in, knowing that he had to go to jail. A lot of us wouldn’t do that. A lot of us would be curled up on a ball like, ‘Oh my God, my life is about to be over.’ So shout-out to Lil Wayne. We’re honored that he chose each and every one of us, handpicked us. And we love him.” Young Money will appear on the “Sucker Free Countdown” Sunday at noon on MTV2 when Funkmaster Flex will interview the camp. Whose performance did you like best at Spring Break?
