Classic hip-hop special will air on MTV2 after first annual Sucker Free Awards. By Gil Kaufman Photo: MTV2 Call it the “Beavis and Butt-Head” factor, but suddenly everything old is, like, cool again. Or something. Case in point: On December 4, MTV2 will herald the return of one of the most beloved franchises in MTV history, “Yo! MTV Raps.” The show, which originally aired from 1988 to 1995, was the first major hip-hop program on a network, and it helped rap videos blow up globally as it gave some of the biggest stars of the day a forum to talk about their music with hosts Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Dr. Dre. The 30-minute retrospective, entitled, “Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts,” will air just after the first annual Sucker Free Awards , which premiere at 11 p.m. on December 4. The show’s original hosts will be on hand to discuss some of the clips that aired on the program, including interviews with the masterminds behind three of the all-time “Yo!” classics: A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario,” Geto Boys’ “My Mind’s Playing Tricks on Me” and Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day.” “It’s a great moment to be reconnected with ‘Yo!’ and examine the music that had a role in introducing hip-hop to music lovers globally,” former co-host Ed Lover said. “By looking back at these classic songs in hip-hop it becomes clear that hip-hop would inevitably transcend distance and generations.” Among the artists viewers will hear from on the special are: Q-Tip, Scarface, Ice Cube, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Khaled, Questlove, Busta Rhymes, Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, Young Jeezy, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife, Fat Joe, Common, Mike Epps, Ice-T, Meek Mill, Tyga and Naughty by Nature. As a bonus, DJ Premier will also be in the house to remix the iconic “Yo!” theme song. “In this Classic Cuts special, people will go back to a seminal time in hip-hop, which many have called the ‘Golden Era,’ resulting in records that are as meaningful today as they were back then,” said original host and hip-hip pioneer Fab 5 Freddy. “In order to appreciate how far hip-hop has come, you have to pay respect to the songs and artists that helped catapult the genre from a small community of fans to world domination.” The “Yo!” special will also cap a monthlong celebration of hip-hop that will culminate with the Sucker Free Awards hosted by MTV’s Sway Calloway. Vote for your favorites now on SuckerFreeAwards.MTV2.com , and don’t forget to tune in December 4 at 11 p.m. ET on MTV2 for the first Sucker Free Awards! Related Videos Yo! Weezy-featuring ‘The Motto’ and T.I.’s ‘Headlines’ freestyle unveiled on L.A. radio Monday. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne and Drake Photo: Getty Images With just two weeks until he releases his sophomore album, Take Care, Drake blessed fans in L.A. with new music when he debuted “The Motto” (featuring Lil Wayne) and T.I.’s version of “Headlines” on Power 106 Monday night. “The Motto” is believed to be Take Care ‘s last bonus track , though a track list on Zune’s website has the song as “Untitled.” Regardless of where it will end up and how it will be placed, the Weezy-assisted song is equipped with a deep rolling bass and staccato drums — a real party starter. From the first few bars, Drake throws it up for his YMCMB fam and responds to Luther Campbell’s claim that non-Miami natives Lil Wayne and DJ Khaled should pay tithes of some sort considering that they now live in the city. Drake throws a not-so-subtle nod to the 2 Live Crew legend’s jabs spitting, “Tell Uncle Luke I’m out in Miami too/ Clubbin’ hard, f—in’ women, there ain’t much to do/ Wrist bling, got a condo up on Biscayne … ain’t sh– change.” Drake also pays homage to late Vallejo, California, rapper Mac Dre , who was gunned down seven years ago Tuesday (November 1). “I’m in the building and I’m feeling myself, rest in peace Mac Dre/ I’mma do it for the Bay, OK,” Drizzy respectfully spits. For the final verse, Wayne utilizes his usual free-associative rhyme pattern with lines like “Talk stupid, off with ya head/ N—a money talks and Mister Ed” and “Ain’t sh– sweet, n—as on the streets like hookers.” For his second premiere of the night, Drake unveiled T.I.’s “Headlines” freestyle. As soon as the beat drops, T.I. makes the beat his own, adding an original flow to the popular beat. “I ball all night, go hard all day, fall deep up in your broad all day,” he starts off his verse. “I liked the record and it was spazzin’, and I felt like, ‘Let’s see what I can add to it,” T.I. told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway about his version of “Headlines” when he visited his “Sway in the Morning” radio show on Shade 45 in October. Since being released from prison in September, T.I. has gotten on a number of high-profile rap songs like Future’s “Magic,” the Throne’s “N—as in Paris” and now Drake’s “Headlines,” and while each freestyle has been well-received, Tip admits that he wasn’t exactly commissioned to jump on the tracks. “None of these people approached me. I did it and got with them [after] and let them know that I did it.” What do you think of Drake’s “The Motto” with Lil Wayne, and T.I.’s “Headlines” freestyle? Tell us in the comments! ‘It’s crazy how a phrase like that can change somebody’s mentality,’ Esco says about album title’s good vibes. By Rob Markman Nas Photo: MTV Nas is living the good life. After the Queensbridge MC revealed the title of his 10th studio album over the weekend, he caught up with DJ Envy of MTV’s Sucker Free and dropped more details about Life Is Good. “Life is also good; the moment you think it ain’t good, it’s over,” Nas said. With his 1994 debut album, titled Illmatic, Nas introduced new slang; he sparked debate with his 2006 album title, Hip Hop Is Dead ; and then he started a whirlwind of controversy when he first proposed to name his 2008 LP N—–. And for this upcoming project, Nas said the title has meaning too, a reflection of his positive outlook on life. “Look at the life we’re in, look at the world we’re in — I just think people need to realize the blessings. Let’s stop worrying about the dark side,” he said. “The end result is life is good, and it’s crazy how a phrase like that can change somebody’s mentality.” Nas even revealed the name of the album’s first single, “Nasty,” which is a play on his original moniker, Nasty Nas. Still, even though he’s giving a nod to his lyrical beginnings, the rapper promises that the track will fit the times. “We ain’t going backwards, we’re staying forward though,” he said. Life Is Good isn’t finished (Nas said it’s “almost there”), but it will be a very personal work. Nas insisted he won’t shy away from addressing what he’s been through in the past few years, including his divorce from singer Kelis . “This album is just a piece of my blood, flesh and bones. This album right here is like — this is the one. They all are the ones, I love all my joints, but this one right here is, ‘Life is good.’ I’m letting a lot go on this. I’m happy that I’m here, man. I’m just a survivor and I look at a lot of us as survivors,” he said. “Everything is addressed; it’s all life. No matter what, at the end of the day, everything is a blessing. I’m a learner, I learn from my experiences.” And it’s all good. Are you excited to hear new music from Nas? Tell us in the comments! Chicago MC continues aggressive comeback on leaked track off Rozay’s upcoming Teflon Don. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage Kanye West continues his furious comeback , this time with a guest turn on Rick Ross’ “Live Fast,” a track from the Miami rapper’s upcoming Teflon Don album. West delivers a super-boastful verse, matching the tone and aggression he rapped with on his most recent number, “Power.” “I’m back by unpopular demand/ Least you still poppin’ in Japan,” ‘Ye raps over staccato-paced drums. “Shopping in Milan, hopping out the van/ Screams from the fans: ‘Yeezy, we always knew you’d be on top again!’ ” A snippet of the track was first made available on Thursday (July 1) — before the entire song leaked later in the day — through a preview of Ross-go-to-director Spiff TV’s Teflon Don: The Bossumentary. Spiff TV is the man behind many of Rozay’s viral Web videos . In the preview clip , West discusses working with Ross, pointing to a number of similarities between him and his Def Jam labelmate. “I just remember Ross had so many verses,” West said. “When I started hearing the records come out, I always felt a connection, ’cause I felt like we came from similar places and we paid so many dues. We all had ups and downs in our lives and sh–. And now, this is the highest caliber you can get to, you know what it is. And it didn’t happen overnight, it’s 10, 15, 20 years in the making.” In addition to West, Ross recently announced he recruited T.I. to appear on Teflon Don ‘s “Maybach Music 3.” “I had to do it real big with someone I never collaborated with before: Tip,” Ross told “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy of T.I. “We got a full orchestra, a live orchestra from the strings on down. It’s gonna be a masterpiece.” You’ve heard Kanye’s “Power,” and now “Live Fast.” Can we call it a comeback? Sound off in the comments! Related Artists Kanye West Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Kanye West Spits Furious Verse On Rick Ross’ ‘Live Fast’
‘I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses,’ Ross says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross Rick Ross’ “Maybach Music” featuring Jay-Z was one of the standout tracks from his sophomore set, Trilla. The Miami rapper upped the star power on the sequel, recruiting Lil Wayne and Kanye West to join him on “Maybach Music 2.” Now, to complete the trilogy, Ross, is connecting with yet another heavyweight MC. “I had to do it real big with someone I never collaborated with before: Tip,” Ross told “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy of T.I. “We got a full orchestra, a live orchestra from the strings on down. It’s gonna be a masterpiece. It felt good to work with him. He just came home and got in the lab. He heard the music, he knows the legacy of part one and part two. And I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses. It’s that ‘Rubber Band Man’ flow.” In the past, Ross spoke out in a lighthearted manner about not being included on Tip’s “Swagga Like Us” record , which also included Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. “How could you forget about me?” he asked in his own freestyle over the M.I.A.-sampled track. “I feel like everything happens in time,” Ross told MTV News about the omission. “What T.I. had on his plate and what he had going on, I think that was the roster for him to put together. He had to make it as big as he could. It’s Paper Trail. He had to make it explosive. … The way I make music, I’m hater-free. So I don’t have egos. I’m a fan.” Ross is putting the finishing touches on his next album, Teflon Don, which is slated for release next month. What are you expecting from “Maybach Music 3”? Let us know in the comments!
