Did You Know: Study Shows Black Men Get 20% Longer Prison Time Than White Men For Commiting The Same Crime

Are you surprised? According to a new study by the U.S. Sentencing Commission, prison sentences handed out to black men in the past seven years have been almost 20% longer than sentences given to white men for the same crimes. Black Men Get Longer Prison Time Than White Men Via WSJ reports: In the two years after the [2005 US v Booker ruling, which gave federal judges more discretion in sentencing], sentences of blacks were on average 15.2% longer than the sentences of similarly situated whites, according to the Sentencing Commission report. Between December 2007 and September 2011, the most recent period covered in the report, sentences of black males were 19.5% longer than those for whites. The analysis also found that black males were 25% less likely than whites in the same period to receive a sentence below the guidelines’ range. There’s a quandary, though. Since judges have been allowed to use their own discretion more in sentencing, black men are receiving harsher sentences. But when judges did have to follow sentencing guidelines, those guidelines did things like impose far stronger penalties for crack than for powder cocaine—meaning black men tended to receive harsher sentences. It’s almost as if, no matter which way you look at it, black men will inevitably be screwed by the US criminal justice system. Nothing new to the Black community…

Kourtney Kardashian Explains Pregnant Hair Dyeing: It’s Safe!

Yes, Kourtney Kardashian dyed her hair a couple weeks ago. And, yes, she’s pregnant with a girl . But, no, despite the criticism Kourtney thinks she’s been getting, this decision was not an irresponsible one. She explains why in a new blog entry. I “followed all of the guidelines from my doctor and took the proper precautions necessary,” Kourtney wrote yesterday. “I highlighted my hair, which is considered the safest form of hair color while pregnant, and not to the root, so nothing ever touched my scalp. I also used products that did not contain any ammonia.” In Kourtney’s defense, she has no way of making money aside from coloring her hair, posing in a bikini , fabricating tabloid stories, etc. So she really did make this move with the best interests of her child in mind. Saying she thought it was “time for some fun,” hence the change, Kourtney koncluded: “Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I take caution in all the products I use all the time, but especially when pregnant.” Yes, the one thing anyone who knows anything about Kourtney Kardashian would cite about this reality star is that she takes caution in all the products she uses all the time, especially when pregnant.

Maine allows some sex offenders to be removed from registry

A new law will allow some Maine sex offenders to remove their names from the state's sex offender registry, but state police say there is a whole list of criteria sex offenders need to meet in order to take advantage of it. Among the guidelines, the offender must been convicted between January 1, 1982 and June 30, 1992, and must have been discharged from the correctional system before September 1, 1998.
