Scientists Conduct Consent-Free Experiments Disproportionately on Blacks, Study Says

Read this article:

G iven the African-American experience with the infamous Tuskegee experiment , it’s worrisome that the risks associated with consent-free experiments are not fairly spread out by race. See Also: Blacks Underrepresented In ‘Life And Death’ Clinical Research, Study Finds A study released on Monday found that African Americans are enrolled in clinical trials that don’t require patient consent at a disproportionately high rate, Stat News reported. This involves administering experimental emergency medical procedures and drugs on patients who often can’t give consent because they’re unable to respond to questions. The Food and Drug Administration permits researchers to conduct these treatments under certain guidelines. The study , published in Health Affairs, found that 29 percent of the patients involved in these experiments are Black, although African Americans represent about 13 percent of the population. African Americans are overrepresented in many clinical trials that don't require informed consent. My @statnews story on today's research: https://t.co/4FdSnjs4kd — Ike Swetlitz (@ikeswetlitz) October 1, 2018 This stands in contrast to multiple studies that found African-Americans are underrepresented in consensual medical research. One study published in June , found that doctors have long used  inaccurate guidelines to determine cardiovascular risks, which was particularly the case with at-risk African-Americans patients. A significant part of the problem with the guidelines was that Blacks were underrepresented in the patient sample used to create the guidelines. News about consent-free experiments comes against the backdrop of government experiments, from 1932 to 1972, on African-American sharecroppers in Tuskegee, Alabama. Researchers deceived Black men about receiving treatment for syphilis, which actually went untreated. The experiments have contributed to widespread distrust in the African-American community of medical experiments—especially without consent. The new study also revealed that many researchers who conduct consent-free experiments use a loophole to avoid publishing certain demographic data about the people they test. Government reporting regulations don’t specify which data they must reveal. This only adds to the lack of transparency and distrust. Love Taps: The Danger Of Telling Little Girls “He Probably Just Likes You”

… Most of us have our own experiences with little boys who got physical, only to have their behavior rationalized and eventually dismissed as a school boy crush. But what does dismissing these types of actions for young boys mean? You’re sending the message to both boys and girls that it’s appropriate to express love and affection through violence. You’re telling young boys that this action doesn’t warrant punishment. What does ignoring or brushing off a traumatic experience do the psyche of a young girl? It could make her feel that her pain and emotions are valid or worthy of attention. That the best relationships come with some sort of physical violence. Instead of teaching young boys to either leave the girls alone or instruct them on ways to identify their feelings, violence is normalized from a early age… [ MadameNoire ] Less Frequent Pap Smear Recommendations Result In Drop In STI Screenings Similar to the guidelines recently introduced in the U.S., which advise women ages 21 to 30 to get Pap tests every three years instead of annually, Canada also announced recommendations for less frequent Pap exams. According to Glamour, a small study that was conducted on 200 Canadian women ages 19 to 25 after the guidelines were introduced revealed that some women became quite lackadaisical in regard to their sexual health. Apparently, many were relieved that they no longer had to undergo Pap testing annually, and the rate of testing decreased by 60 percent. Unfortunately, screenings for sexually transmitted diseases and infections also dropped by 50 percent as a result of the new recommendations… [ MadameNoire ] Black Captain America Is An Enemy Of Conservatives Says Fox News The new Captain America, known to Marvel comic book fans as Sam Wilson AKA The Falcon, has been rocking the red, white and blue since last year. However, it appears that Cap has angered the pundits of Fox News, who says the superhero is going after conservatives. The hosts of Fox & Friends actually spent part of their weekend broadcast to focus on the dangers of Captain America and his supposed fight against the Right. After co-host Tucker Carlson opened up the segment, he hands over the spotlight to Clayton Morris who then speaks on Marvel’s supposedly lagging comic sales and so-called “PR stunts.” Carlson chimes in and explains that Captain America’s new nemesis isn’t someone related to longtime enemy HYDRA, but the Sons Of The Serpent, a bunch of zealous, pro-Constitution radicals who are especially harsh on immigrants. Carlson took a swipe at liberals by stating “unlimited illegal immigration” as the main aim of the Serpents… [ HipHopWired ] Trinidad James Launches GoFundMe Campaign For Victims Of A Terrorist Attack In Kenya [ VibeVixen ] ‘OITNB’ Star Dascha Polanco is Single and Open to Chicks [ TMZ ] Deputies Acquitted In Killing Of Inmate Matthew Ajibade [ HuffingtonPost ] Bethenny Frankel Leaving The Spotlight After ‘RHONY’ Return? Twitter Sex Scandal: Vine App Features Adult Video in Editor’s Picks

Vine’s recent “sex scandal” became a nightmare for parent company Twitter after an adult video appeared in the app’s “Editor’s Picks” this week. Twitter rushed to keep its younger users away from questionable content Tuesday, while Vine announced it had blocked searches for adult material. Hashtags like #sex and #porn no longer turn up results. The social network, currently valued at $9 billion, recently tuned up its photo capabilities to compete with Instagram and launched its video service , Vine, last week. Vine lets users make and share six-second looped videos. Some of its users turned it to less tasteful ends, however, a problem highlighted when Vine accidentally featured a video called “Dildoplay” in its Editor’s Picks. Twitter apologized in a statement: “A human error resulted in a video with adult content becoming one of the videos in Editor’s Picks, and upon realizing this mistake we removed the video immediately.” “We apologize to our users for the error.” It wasn’t necessarily a one-off, however. Vinepeek, a new site that lets you watch streams of so-called Vines from around the world, began to feature porn as well. Over the weekend technology websites reported that a simple search for “#porn” in the new app brought up many videos with, yes, hardcore porn. Funny how that works. Vine says that users can report this content and the video will be covered with a warning message and that if a video violates its guidelines it will be removed. “Uploaded videos reported and determined to violate our guidelines will be removed, and the user account that posted the video may be terminated,” Twitter said. Vine’s Terms of Service does not explicitly say anything about pornography or nudity, however, and clearly there are filtering needs that must be met here.

Maine allows some sex offenders to be removed from registry

A new law will allow some Maine sex offenders to remove their names from the state's sex offender registry, but state police say there is a whole list of criteria sex offenders need to meet in order to take advantage of it. Among the guidelines, the offender must been convicted between January 1, 1982 and June 30, 1992, and must have been discharged from the correctional system before September 1, 1998.
