Has The Immigration Ban Caused An Increase In Mental Health Services?

Last week, graduate students at the University of Southern California petitioned the university for enhanced mental health services. They requested these services for “Muslim, refugee, immigrant, international and other marginalized student groups” in response to the president’s immigration ban and other executive orders that affect the student population. Is this a reasonable ask? In a word, yes. The primary motive behind the immigration ban and the emotion it evokes are the same: fear — fear of being deported; fear of being permanently separated from family members; fear of going back to a country where the threat of persecution and even death are present. And that fear has a huge impact on mental health. Fear is the body’s response to uncertainty and adversity. It has well-known physical components like sweating, rapid heartbeat, and nausea. Longer term effects of fear include stress, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances. Research indicates up to 20% of women (8% of men) who experience a traumatic event — like the enacting of the immigration ban — are likely to develop serious emotional problems. This could mean an increase in the number of students seeking psychological services for relief. [ madamenoire ] LeBron James Apologized To Wife Savannah For Often Putting Basketball Before Family When you’re trying to juggle a career, a marriage, a family and still hoping to find a way to carve a little something out for yourself, something’s got to give. In an attempt to excel in one area, usually our professional careers, many of us take for granted the other aspects of our life that require tender love and care. It’s one thing to know you’re slacking in such a way, it’s another to actually acknowledge, apologize to and celebrate those who’ve been put on the backburner. LeBron James is doing just that. While speaking with teammates Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, who have the podcast Road Trippin, he James stated that his drive to be the greatest to play in the NBA has caused him to, at times, sacrifice being with his family so that he can train, practice and play. It’s something he decided to apologize to wife Savannah for. “I am addicted to the process. I’m addicted to the process,” he said. “It’s so funny. I just told my wife the other day, I apologized to her. She was like ‘What are you apologizing for?’ I said ‘Because the journey that I’m on to want to be the greatest to ever play this game or to the point where no one ever forgets what I accomplished, I’ve at times lost the fact of how important you are to this whole thing.’” [ madamenoire ] Diddy Announces Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: The Bad Boy Story Documentary Finally, we are getting a documentary about one of Hip-Hop’s most storied record labels and crews, Bad Boy. First Black “Bachelorette” On The Pressure To Pick A Black Man: “I’m Not Choosing A Man For America”

In February, we told you that the newest “Bachelorette,” make that “Black Bachelorette,” had been picked earlier than usual. She is 31-year-old Rachel Lindsay, a civil defense litigation attorney from Texas. Lindsay was just eliminated on last night’s episode of The Bachelor to move on to bigger and better things. “To be the first African-American woman is a beautiful thing,” Lindsay said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about what’s next for her. “I’m honored and humbled to be the one chosen. Because that’s how I feel: like I was chosen to be in this role.” When speaking to PEOPLE last month about her excitement, Lindsay said that she was happy to “represent myself as a Black woman in front of America.” As a Black woman going on a dating show to find love, Lindsay told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s received a lot of questions from fellow Black people who wonder if she will pick a Black man (which was debated in our comment section when we announced Lindsay as the next “Bachelorette”). [ madamenoire ] The Lesson Even Beyoncé Could’ve Learned From Emma Watson’s Feminism When I first saw Emma Watson’s titties on the pages of Vanity Fair I didn’t think anything of it. She’s a woman. She has breasts and that day she felt like showing them. No big deal. But then came all this conversation about Emma being a feminist and whether or not feminists should exploit their bodies in this way. I rolled my eyes. It’s an old and tired argument. If the decision to show a bit of side boob, was indeed her own, then what was the problem? During this time of apathy, I stumbled across a tweet from For Harriet founder Kimberly Foster. I wondered what that meant for a second but still didn’t care to do the research. Then yesterday, I discovered that Emma was defending her comments and clarifying her statements made about Beyoncé. Ding! That’s the ticket. Not only was the story made more salacious and outrageous by the attack on one of my faves, the best entertainer of our generation. It also positioned White feminism against Black feminism or even more simply a White woman against a Black one. That’s when I started paying attention. First, I heard that Emma allegedly questioned Beyoncé’s feminism when she saw the visuals for the album that “stopped the world” Beyoncé dropped. But before that narrative could even percolate, Emma came through with the transcript to clear her name. Joey Bada$$ might’ve overreached when he said he was better than Tupac, but even Pac would appreciate Joey’s clip to “Land Of The Free” where KKK sponsored police persecute Black lives in the middle of the desert. After You’re Dead And Gone, Would You Be Cool With Your Sibling Dating Your Spouse?

Former Vice President, Joe Biden confirmed the news of the relationship with the New York Post’s Page Six, “We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness. They have mine and Jill’s all and complete support and we are happy for them.” You may be wondering what the hell “N*gga I ain’t worried about nothin’” has to do with all of this. Well, I’m trying to put myself in Beau’s shoes. I’m wondering if my soul would be troubled by the fact that my sibling was now romantically involved with my spouse. A part of me thinks that I would be occupied with more pressing concerns, like how my parents and children were coping in the wake of my departure. I would like to think that I wouldn’t be tripping about the fact that two people who I loved dearly, fell in love with each other. Once you get past the salaciousness of the news, it makes sense. Hallie had just lost her husband. Hunter had just lost his brother and then left his wife. Their names both start with an H. You don’t have to think hard about how they might have ended up with one another. After the music video for Kanye West’s “Fade” debuted at the 2016 MTV VMAs featuring Taylor working it with her “Flashdance”/”Do The Right Thing” provocative dance moves, everyone was talking about how fit and in shape she was. A light bulb obviously went off in Taylor’s head because now the singer has just released her own online workout series aptly called Fade2Fit. “Fade2Fit is a 90-day course, which also comes with tailored meal plans, a workout calendar, dance routines and seven workouts in seven minutes. Currently, the pricing options are three monthly payments of $49.99, for a total charge of $149.97, or a limited-time offer for a one-time payment of $99.79, which will also include added perks such as 10 percent off apparel and equipment and free access to all future Teyana workouts,” reported The Root. [ madamenoire ] Desiigner, D.R.A.M., Lil Yachty Land Spots on Forbes Cash Prince List Forbes just dropped another one of their pocket-watcher alerts. The money magazine has revealed the 2017 iteration of their annual Cash Princes [and Princesses] list. Most of them are names that you’ve been hearing from everyday, all day, all year. Desiigner, D.R.A.M., Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert and Young M.A. are the obvious inclusions as their profiles have been hard to miss. Not obvious additions were Isaiah Rashad and Noname. The list was rounded out by British MC Stormzy [who just dropped a very dope album] and singers Tory Lanez and Bryson Tiller. How does one qualify to be on the Cash Prince list? Obviously, you have to be making some good money. Yachty for example, has secured his bag via Sprite and Target commercials as well commanding $100,000 a show. You also have to be under the age of 30 and have never appeared on the list before. The list was put together by TDE’s Dave Free, Too $hort, Brit rapper Little Simz as well as staffers from Forbes. We Will Never Forget That Moonlight Won Best Picture

Last night will certainly go down as one of thee most memorable Oscars ever! Not because of any incredible speeches. Though we heard those. (Looking at you Viola!) Not because there was a huge upset and disappointment (though Denzel was robbed) and not because Three-Six Mafia won the Oscar for best song. No, the 2017 Oscars will go down in history as the most memorable because of a mistake— a huge one. The Academy, as a safety precaution, prints two sets of cards. And while Emma Stone was given her Actress in a leading role envelope, so was Warren Beatty the presenter of Best Picture. If you saw the moment live last night, you saw Warren pull out the paper and look inside the envelope to see if there was another one inside it. We thought he was joking, trying to stall for time. But that wasn’t the case. He realized that the card was not right and handed it over to actress Faye Dunaway for her assistance. Well, Dunaway didn’t think too much about the fact that Emma’s name was on the card. She said La La Land and the cast, crew, directors and producers started piling up on the stage to accept their golden man. But the one place our eyes always settle is on her skin. And that’s on purpose. When Davis was asked about her style after this year’s SAG Awards she said her fashion goal is simple — “always trying to emphasize my skin…I just always want to celebrate my skin tone — and my boob-age.” And it turns out the product she uses to emphasize that beautiful brown skin of hers is something you and your mama likely already have at home: Vaseline. Yup, good old Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion, made with 100% pure cocoa butter to keep dry elbows and dull skin at bay. Macy Gray’s New Song “White Man” Is Right On Time

Macy Gray is one of those artists who often gets overlooked until she releases a song you can’t ignore and you remember just how incredibly talented she is. Today, the five-time Grammy-nominated singer released a powerful anthem called “White Man” that pretty much sums up how most people of color feel living in Trump’s America right now. She sings in the first verse: Hey white man I am not my grandmother I’m from the city Canton, Ohio I’m just a lady but I think like a man You hating me and I don’t understand You judging me, you want to send me to hell God is my father and I got my band You come for me, let me make it clear [ madamenoire ] Should The Congressional Black Caucus Let An Afro-Latino Into Its Ranks? Should a Latino be allowed to join the Congressional Black Caucus? According to an article in last week’s Politico entitled “Black Caucus chafes at Latino who wants to join,” that’s the million dollar question currently being debated, albeit silently, by Caucus members on the Hill. The Latino in consideration is no other than (D-NY 13th District) Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who last November became the first Dominican-American elected to Congress. While he has not been formally asked to join the 47-year-old organization, he tells Politico writer Heather Caygle that he is currently in discussion with CBC leaders about the “pros and cons” of his potential membership. According to Caygle, more than a dozen CBC members and their aides were interviewed for the piece although very few of the CBC current leadership wanted to go on record, citing the “sensitivity” of the issue. 11 Stars Twitter Wants To Protect From 2016

This has been a pretty rough year in terms of losing our icons, and losing them at ages that are far from what one would consider “old.” After losing George Michael, Ricky Harris and Carrie Fisher in a span of days at the tail end of the year, Twitter users are more than disappointed — they are pretty frightened. People started saying that precautions need to be taken to look out for the icons we have left, whose work we’ve grown up with and followed. Here is a list of stars Twitter users said we need to keep a 24/7 eye on as this disappointing year comes to a close. The 35-year-old has spoken about the hurt of being kicked out of one of the highest-selling girl groups of all time on more than one occasion, but this time Roberson is putting all of her thoughts all in one place: A memoir to be released in the spring of 2017.
