Criticizing Hillary Clinton has been a regular pastime for a large swathe of America for the past two or three decades, and that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. Not even following the horrific Mandalay Bay massacre in Las Vegas that killed 58 and injured more than 500. Critics claim that Hillary’s tweet following the massacre was overly political and displayed “ignorance” of firearms. Did it? Those who were still up on Sunday night and those waking up to terrible news on Monday morning expressed their reactions to the absolute horror of the shooting in Las Vegas. Everyone on Twitter, from big-name celebrities to friends to coworkers to that one guest star you thirst-followed three years ago, was speaking out. Those who couldn’t find the words themselves retweeted those who could. Hillary Clinton, the 2016 candidate preferred by the majority of American voters and regarded by many as America’s monarch-in-exile, tweeted appropriately. “Las Vegas, we are grieving with you — the victims, those who lost loved ones, the responders, & all affected by this cold-blooded massacre.” We all saw the horrifying videos and heard the unmistakable sounds of gunfire. Hillary did, too, and followed up her tweet with this: “The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get.” We’ll talk about that bill, don’t you worry. “Our grief isn’t enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again.” Obviously, this was the cue to everyone who’s ever read a Cracked article to try to make themselves sound like an expert on firearms. Hillary was referring to H.R.367, the almost absurdly named Hearing Protection Act of 2017. Despite it’s name, it’s not a proposed law about noise pollution or public nuisances or hearing aids. It’s an NRA-backed bill that would make it easier to get silencers for guns by removing restrictions on silencers so that they are regulated just like regular ol’ guns. As you may have guessed, Hillary’s critics mocked her by pointing out that silencers don’t actually make guns silent; they just muffle the noise somewhat. An NRA spokeswoman tweeted: “Suppressors only reduce by a few decibels, still same decibel level as a jack hammer.” A radio host tweeted: “Appallingly stupid, and entirely irrelevant, Mrs Clinton She knows nothing about firearms, and even worse, she doesn’t care.” Though Hillary’s tweet doesn’t immediately convey whether or not she’s aware that silencers do not make guns literally silent, let’s remember two things: One, Hillary Clinton is an almost frighteningly intelligent person. That’s based on basically every interaction that she’s ever had. Two, if gunshots are quieter, even just a little bit, that means that fewer people will be aware of them. Have you ever been to a concert? There are absolutely concerts at which “a few decibels” could make the difference between a gunshot being audible and it going unnoticed save to those who get shot. Countless public voices have called out for the US to actually, for once, do something to prevent future mass shootings. Ariana Grande called for gun control , and she is obviously no stranger to terrorist attacks at concerts. Politicians who rely upon NRA endorsements and funding continue to turn a blind eye to common-sense solutions that have been proven to work in other countries — most notably in Australia. There are those who characterize the NRA as the greatest ally of domestic terrorists. At this point, that is getting harder and harder to dispute. But it’s much easier for the pro-gun lobby to criticize people calling for common sense gun regulations than it is for them to explain why, exactly, massacres in which hundreds and hundreds of people are hospitalized are becoming a staple of American existence. This might be the most random feud that we’ve ever seen. But it’s 2017 and nothing makes sense anymore. The horrific shooting Las Vegas that left nearly 60 people dead and more than 500 injured has engendered a lot of conversations about gun control, public safety, and terrorism. But it’s also prompted this weird feud. This is not the time, guys. Dakota Meyer has military experience, but his role in the armed forces isn’t why he’s famous. He’s the husband to Bristol Palin, which makes him Sarah Palin’s son-in-law. (Seriously … he wasn’t born into the Palin clan — he willingly married into it. Can you imagine ?!) And then there’s Dan Bilzerian. The professional poker player got rich by gambling and now he shows off his wealth by, well, owning a lot of guns, parading a lot of hot women around him in various states of undress, and being an internet personality. Basically, Bilzerian is cashing in on hypermasculine fantasies by living out the dreams of your average male failure and, therefore, earning their respect and admiration. (Well … at least he appears to live it out. It might be a bit much to suggest that Bilzerian actually has sex with every hot model featured in his very staged-looking photos) Bilzerian also makes a habit of making anti-feminist statements, associating with truly terrible people like Floyd Mayweather, and generally coming across as a huge douche. You’d think that, as different as their lifestyles might be, politics alone would put Dan Bilzerian and Dakota Meyer on the same side. But not this time. Dan Bilzerian filmed the mass shooting in Las Vegas . Or, at least, what he experienced of it. In the (very upsetting — there are no “good” videos from that event) video, Dan describes his experience as he flees the massacre. “A girl just got shot in the head. This is so crazy.” Horrific. Dan claims that he is headed to retrieve one of his guns, which would be almost comical if this weren’t such a serious subject. “Had to go grab a gun. I’m f—ing heading back. [Expletive] it’s so crazy — some kind of mass shooting. [Explective] guy had a heavy caliber weapon for sure. Saw some girl f—ing get shot in the face right next to me, her brains f—ing hanging out. Stupid-a– me didn’t bring a gun.” The self-proclaimed King of Instagram then updated his followers. “They got one of the guys. I’m headed back. I don’t think there’s much I can do.” There was never anything that Dan could do, of course. Even if he were as badass as he’d like his followers to believe. The shooter was in a hotel room. Did Dan intend to just start shooting into windows of the Mandalay Bay? There’s a lot to criticize there. Care to see what struck a nerve with Dakota Meyer? Meyer took to Instagram to vent his frustration with the man. “This is why children shouldn’t classify heroes by their followers or their photos. @danbilzerian this is what kills me about people like you. Always playing ‘operator dress up’ and so so tough when the cameras are on.” That is fair. Dan got rich gambling and it’s not inaccurate to describe so much of what Dan does as playing dress-up. Having a sizable gun collection is a sign of all sorts of issues and insecurities, but it’s not an indication of military prowess. “A woman just got shot in the head and you are running away filming that’s not what operators do. Please stop trying to be someone your not. People are dying, you’re running away not helping them and pretending it’s worthy of a video is disgusting.” We do have an issue with that last bit. In that … most people absolutely should run away from a shooting in most situations. Staying in the area will just make you another person for law enforcement to need to protect. Even if you die, law enforcement will need to determine that you’re dead or they will very likely want to treat you as an injured person who is in danger of being shot again or injured in a crossfire. But Dan Bilzerian’s brand means that he has to pretend, to his followers, to be a brave, manly hero or he’ll majorly lose face with them. His lame excuses in the video are fairly self-evident. The fact that he felt a need to broadcast them at all is, honestly, a little sad. So we are, against our will, forced to agree with Dakota Meyer, here. Mostly. On Wednesday, the Seattle Seahawks star was overcome with emotion during a press conference when talking about the Vegas police incident. He told reporters, “It sucks that the country that we live in now, sometimes you get profiled for the color of your skin.” Bennett got emotional when talking about being a Black man in America and his daughters, saying, “I try to tell my daughters every single day that they matter.” Bennett got some emotional, he abruptly left the press conference. Despite the touching moment, Las Vegas police department held a press conference of their own. The Vegas Metro Police Department say they don’t believe Michael’s incident was racially motivated and that they may have the receipts to prove it. Sheriff Kevin McMahill claims there is bodycam footage, which shows officers clearing out dozens of people of various races just before the incident with the football star. He says officers only chased Bennett when he acted suspiciously during the intense search. McMahill added, “Due to Bennett’s actions [police] believed Bennett may have been involved in the shooting and they gave chase. I see no evidence that race played any role in this incident.” You may recall that Bennett said in an open letter that police forced him to the ground and and threatened to “blow my f***ng head off.” As for the shooting that police thought Bennet may have been involved in — there was no shooting. By the time they reined her in after her nearly 3-month spending spree, they discovered she had blown an average of $860 a day, which is a huge amount by South African standards. The total missing from the account is $65,000. A fellow student said about Mani, “She went from a hard-up, humdrum, run-of-the-mill student to one who was leading a lavish lifestyle and seemed to have no bottom to her purse and lived the high life.” I guess getting an accidental mil isn’t as lit as expected. Mani said she was not denying anything and would tell her side later, but she has fled the campus and gone into hiding. Walter Sisulu University spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said, “she will have to repay the money” and Intellimali chief executive Michael Ansell said, “Legal action will be taken against the student. A forensic investigator had been appointed.”
