Paranormal Activity 4 Trailer: Webchat Terror

Yet another Paranormal Activity sequel is heading to theaters this fall, but the increasingly repetitive found footage franchise is introducing some new elements to its scare tactics. For instance, a blonde chick, after three movies of brunettes! Even more original: Paranormal Activity 4 will deliver its spooks via Skype — so tech-forward, so of the moment — the likes of which we totally haven’t seen before. Or have we? The October four-quel is set in November of 2011, five years after Katie (Katie Featherston) and her boyfriend (Micah Sloat) suffered the supernatural attacks that set the half-billion dollar Paranormal Activity train off into microbudget blockbuster history. Forget the dumb shenanigans that sent prequel Paranormal 3 running off the rails into horror hokum; this one’s about teenagers and the internet and webcam technology! … which might feel a lot more cutting edge if it hadn’t already been done, and well, by director Joe Swanberg in the horror anthology V/H/S , which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival just weeks after a fourth Paranormal Activity was announced. In Swanberg’s V/H/S segment, a girl and her boyfriend chat via Skype as strange happenings befall one of them, suspense building from the clever use of the obscured and fragmented perspective of “found” chat window footage. At Sundance, I spoke with one of the producers of the Paranormal Activity franchise and one of the major horror titles on his radar was — surprise, surprise — V/H/S . Conveniently enough for Paramount and the PA4 filmmakers, indie horror fave V/H/S won’t be released until October 5, and in limited release at that; shame mainstream audiences aren’t likely to even hear it before PA4 barrels along into wide release on October 19. Meanwhile, as fast and on the fly as these Paranormal Activity movies seem to be made, the last installment was something of an extra-unusual curiosity in that a good portion of footage (and, seemingly, entire plot threads) teased in earlier trailers were cut out of the final film . Shooting cheaply, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (the Catfish guys, back behind the camera on PA4 ), seemed to have filmed a number of potential endings that went discarded in favor of the lamest ending imaginable. I’ll admit I’m curious to see how they stitch together a story this time and if we’ll see anything from this and subsequent trailers in the eventual theatrical cut. Verdict: Oh, fine . Watch PA4 , but make sure to seek out V/H/S this October. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Breaking Nudes from Sundance: Midnight Movie Madness

The Sundance Film Festival’ s midnight movies have quite a reputation, what with (sk)incidents of festival-goers passing out, freaking out, throwing up, and being carried away by EMTs during screenings every single year . It’s probably just clueless filmgoers woozy from the high altitude, as Devin Faraci points out in a recent Badass Digest article , but as the filmmakers behind The Killer Inside Me (2010) and The Woman (2011) (both of which had contentious Sundance screenings) will tell you, there’s no such thing as bad publicity when your goal is to shock. So which nude, crude flicks made Sundance spew this year? Get the skinny from our Skin Skout after the jump!

Sundance Diary: Ice Loves Coco Loves Sundance and 9 Other Random Fest Highlights

As Sundance 2012 passed the halfway point, the celebs and hangers-on and people watchers started filtering out of Park City, leaving the sidewalks actually walkable and the shuttles downright spacious. I prepare to go home tomorrow, with many more interviews and reports to come, but the glorious peacefulness has me misty-eyed about the week that was; here’s a quick rundown of highlights from the first week of the fest — the movies I loved, the events that transpired, and yes, the time I met with Ice-T and Coco to talk hip-hop while they munched on pancakes. Select highlights, in no particular order: – Ice-T and Coco (above): I spotted her, badonk-first, at the premiere for Ice-T’s The Art of Rap: Something from Nothing . The next day we met over breakfast — theirs, not mine — and I chatted with Ice about his directorial debut. – On Air : Joined indieWIRE’s Eugene Hernandez on his fest radio show, The Daily Buzz, broadcast live from Park City’s NPR affiliate KPCW, which is conveniently located directly above the nearest state liquor store. Just sayin’… – V/H/S : As if the horror anthology itself wasn’t great enough, the poster for V/H/S was simple and clever enough. Plus, it probably cost about $.35 to make. – Anthony Mackie and His Eyelashes Ride the Shuttle : Who knows why, but I looked over and caught the Hurt Locker star riding the shuttle to Eccles one day. With us normies ! – Napoleon Sigh-namite : Meanwhile, one day on Main St. I watched as a mob of autograph seekers followed Jon Heder as he strode uptown, clamoring the whole time, “Hey, it’s Napoleon Dynamite!” Poor Jon Heder. – Drop Drop Dat… Uncle Luke of 2 Live Crew stars in a short film in competition ( Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke ) which is one of the most fun and fresh (to def, even) films I saw here. Plus, who can resist a man who has his own whoopee cushion? (Image via @BorschtCorp) – Group Cry : That moment during The Surrogate when I could hear the entire theater quietly crying, a symphony of sob sniffles all moved to the core in the same single moment… – Leave the Favorite : That moment during Stephen Frears’ Lay the Favorite when a dozen people around me walked out and I daydreamed that they’d taken me with them… – Spike + Mic : That moment in the Red Hook Summer Q&A when Spike Lee shut down a woman who was less than pleased with his film’s ending: “Miss, Miss, Miss… it’s early in the morning, let’s not start.” – And Last But Not Least…: Karaoke . One-Handed Workout: Eroticise [VIDEO]

This week’s One-Handed Workout is an example of skinplicity at its finest, and will bring back many slappy memories for guys who spent most of the ’80s with a VCR remote on one side and a tissue box on the other. Courtesy of Vestron Video , the distributor of such skinfamous titles as 1977’s Cinderella (the porn), Takin’ it Off (1985), Chained Heat (1983), Blame it on Rio (1984) and H.O.T.S. (1979), Eroticise stars gazonga goddess Kitten Natividad in a naked (pun intended) attempt to bring together the ’80s aerobics trend and the ever-expanding (pun also intended) market of teenage boys too young to rent XXX porn, but still looking for some quality T&A on VHS. Work up a sweat with Eroticise after the jump!
