Kristen Stewart’s Big ‘Nerdy’ Week

The ‘Breaking Dawn’ star’s ‘Snow White’ trailer and possible ‘Akira’ casting are hot topics on ‘Talk Nerdy to Me.’ By Josh Wigler Kristen Stewart in “Snow White & The Huntsman” Photo: Universal Kristen Stewart is having a big week. Not only is she kicking off the first of her final two “Twilight” films with Friday’s (November 18) release of “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” she also set the geek world on fire with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer and reports that she could join the cast of “Akira,” based on the beloved Katsuhiro Otomo anime and manga of the same name. But the reactions to those two projects have been decidedly mixed — as with all things, there’s some good and some bad — so it’s up to us to dive into those topics and more on this week’s episode of “Talk Nerdy to Me.”Keep reading for a taste of all the “Nerdy”-ness that awaits you this week! KStew Approaches “Akira” News dropped earlier this week that an offer has been made to Stewart to join the cast of “Akira” as Kei, the psychokinetic female lead. It’s not necessarily Stewart’s casting that has fans so up in arms, but the very nature of the project itself: Gone are the Asian influences of the original “Akira,” as Neo-Tokyo is renamed Neo-Manhattan and an all-Japanese cast is turned into an all-white one, among other grievances. “Nerdy” resident fanboy Brian Phares and MTV Geek’s Alex Zalben were divided on their feelings on the “Akira” adaptation; find out what they had to say in this week’s episode. Kristen’s Total “Snow” Out While not everyone is on-board with Stewart approaching “Akira,” the support for her work in “Snow White and the Huntsman” is unanimous. Kristen’s debut as the fairy-tale-princess-turned-cunning-warrior electrified the Web last Thursday and continues to impress over a week later. But Stewart’s not the only fairest maiden around: Lily Collins made her Snow White debut in the “Mirror, Mirror” trailer, which has not been as warmly received … with the exception of one “Talk Nerdy” host (definitely not yours truly, you guys), who can’t contain his excitement for Tarsem Singh’s next movie. (Seriously, I’m really pumped.) Doctor Potter Moving away from Kristen for a moment, the nerdosphere was taken by surprise this week with the announcement that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” director David Yates would be launching a big-screen take on “Doctor Who,” the popular BBC television series that’s been around for nearly 50 years now. There’s some skepticism that this vision of “Who” will ever see theaters, though Zalben, our resident “Who” expert, has a different take on the news. Men of Steel, Too! In other surprising movie news, rumors emerged this week that “Man of Steel” is already ramping up its sequel. Warner Bros. is reportedly seeking writers for a follow-up to Zack Snyder’s Superman film — a year and a half ahead of that movie’s June 2013 release, mind you — and Team Nerdy pondered whether it’s just too early to look so far ahead. “Breaking” the Box Office We closed out this week’s episode with another round of Stewart-related goodness, examining the box-office prospects for “Breaking Dawn.” Spoiler alert: It’s going to make a metric you-know-what ton of money. We also looked ahead at next week’s new releases and vocalized our support for the return of the “Muppets.” Get all of our box-office analysis in this week’s “Talk Nerdy.” Tell us what you thought of this week’s “Talk Nerdy to Me” in the comments section! Jennifer Hudson Asks ‘Where You At?’ On ‘American Idol’

‘It feels good to be home!’ the ‘Idol’ alum exclaims after her performance. By Kara Warner Jennifer Hudson performs on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: FOX In the midst of the season’s most surprising results episode , “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson returned to the stage to perform the new single from her just-released album I Remember Me. After Ryan Seacrest proudly introduced J.Hud to the crowd, emphasizing the fact that the season-three contestant is the show’s only Oscar winner, Hudson took the stage to perform the ballad “Where You At?” Sporting a black dress with cut-outs at the shoulders accented with bits of gold, Hudson’s look was fresh, elegant and sophisticated, much like her performance of the song, which is filled with heartbreak and words of love lost. At the end of “Where You At?,” Hudson was warmly received by the enthusiastic audience. “It feels good to be home!” she exclaimed. One of the major highlights in Hudson’s performance, in addition to the song itself, was the sight of her fellow season-three contestant George Huff singing backup. Huff, who was as smiley as always, received a hearty round of applause as soon as Seacrest pointed him out to the crowd. Regarding Hudson’s new album , as well as her transformation — both mentally and physically — over the last couple of years, she recently told MTV News that she feels like a new person. “Oh my God! It’s like a new me. It’s like a new introduction of myself — for myself and to others as well — in every way, from image to music to everything,” she said. “And it’s like, in a way, for me, I’m rediscovering myself at the same time. I like the old me too … if I could just marry the two together, then I feel like I’m in good shape.” What did you think of Hudson’s new single? Let us know in the comments! What Has Danny Gokey Been Up To Since ‘American Idol’?

Season-eight alum shows off his country makeover on ‘Idol’ results show with ‘My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.’ By James Montgomery, with additional reporting by Gil Kaufman Danny Gokey Photo: F. Michelotta/ Getty Images for Fox On Thursday night’s (March 4) “American Idol” results show, amid the carnage and the castaways, Danny Gokey performed “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me,” the first proper single from his just-released debut album, My Best Days. It was a pretty sage move by show producers, and not just because Gokey has a disc to promote. The newly departed “Idol” hopefuls could learn a thing or two from the song’s inspirational message. And from Gokey himself. Rocking a leather jacket, jeans, a burgundy shirt and his signature specs, Gokey’s gravelly soul voice was warmly received as he sang the peppy country pop tune about the power of positive thinking. “I can be whatever I want to be/ My best days are ahead of me,” he crooned over a twanging pedal-steel riff. “I’ve got sunsets to witness, dreams to dance with/ And beaches to walk on and lovers to kiss.” Asked why he went country for his first album, Gokey — who tried to get an invite from Ellen DeGeneres to dance on her show after his performance — said it was suggested by one of last year’s mentors, country icon Randy Travis. “When I did ‘Jesus Take the Wheel,’ he came up to me after … and he said, ‘Have you ever considered doing country?’ And I started telling him how country influenced me when I was younger … and he said, ‘Well, you need to do country. The amount of soul and passion you put into it, the fans would embrace you and love you.’ ” After spending most of his “Idol” run being tagged as “the guy with the tragedy” — a reference to the death of his young wife Sophia four weeks before his audition — Gokey said he wanted to come out with a first single that showed how much hope “Idol” gave him. “I just found out the writer of the song lost his wife too and he wrote this song a few months after she passed away. And without me knowing it, I picked it up, I recorded it and put it on radio. … It’s an anthem for me. I’m excited about life again.” Ever since he was eliminated from “Idol” last season , Gokey has been working tirelessly to make his dreams a reality. Over the summer, he began meeting with Nashville record execs and announced plans to reinvent himself as a country singer , telling MTV News that “country music kind of houses the message that I like … and it carries a lot of meaning for me. So I never thought about it before, but I could see myself doing it, if we could just get the twang right.” In September, he officially signed with RCA Nashville (he was the last of season eight’s final four to land a record deal) and began work on his debut album. In November, during a phone interview with hometown radio station FM 106.1, he unveiled the first song from the record, a ballad called “It’s Only,” which was written by Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley and produced by Mark Bright, who had previously worked with Gokey’s fellow “Idol” alum Carrie Underwood. Gokey described the song as his favorite off the album. “It has such a touching lyric. It’s so beautiful,” he said. “I love all the songs that appear on my CD, but this one … when I sing this song, a passion comes out of me. … I feel it when I sing it.” He performed at the venerable Grand Ole Opry and shot a video for “Best Days,” which replaced “It’s Only” as the first single from his record. The song began climbing country radio’s top 40 chart, and just last month, it was announced that Gokey would serve as the opening act on Sugarland’s spring tour. The country makeover, it would seem, is complete. In the meantime, he continues to work with Sophia’s Heart , the charitable organization he established in honor of his late wife. In addition to using funds to provide relief to the victims of January’s Haitian earthquake, the organization plans to launch a Nashville-based music and arts program this year. In Defense of Throwing Tomatoes at Sarah Palin

Since we opened up that can of stewed pears by praising the guy who threw tomatoes at Sarah Palin , we figured it’s a good time to explain why it was cool that he did that. In other words: Food fight ! Here are the reasons (besides the obvious ones) that we think it was a good idea for Jeremy Paul Olson to throw food at Sarah Palin today during her Minnesota reading, for which he is currently incarcerated: Throwing food at people has a long, messy history The first recorded incident of throwing food at a public figure in history, according to our ten minutes of Googling, was in 60-something AD when Roman emperor Vespasianus Ceaser Augustus was “pelted with turnips” at a riot, most likely by people sick of having nothing to eat but turnips. In the 1770s, preacher John Crook was similarly assaulted when he tried to convert the heathens of the Isle of Man to Methodism
