Toni Morrison Dies; Beloved Poet Laureate Was 88

Toni Morrison, the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature, died last night in a New York hospital. She was 88 years old. Knopf spokesman Paul Bogaards confirmed the author’s death, but didn’t announce an immediate cause or provide any further details. Morrison was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. She was the second oldest of four children born to George and Ramah Wofford, sharecroppers who had migrated north from Alabama. The couple raised their kids in an integrated, working-class neighborhood, an experience Morrison would later explain as follows to The New York Times: “When I was in first grade, nobody thought I was inferior. I was the only black in the class and the only child who could read.” Morrison graduated with honors from Lorain High School in 1949 and went on to Howard University, where she majored in English and minored in the classics. Morrison’s best known book is likely “Beloved,” which centered on a mother making the tragic choice to murder her baby to save the girl from slavery; it won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988. Five years later, she awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize for Literature, as judges hailed her as one “who in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality. Morrison was also bestowed America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2012. You can see President Barack Obama hang the prize around her neck in the memorable photo above. Overall, Morrison was a renowned figure in literature, with multiple novels under her belt that spoke to the African-American experience. Along with “Beloved,” you may be familiar with “Jazz” and “Paradise,” the three of which comprised a loose trilogy — with the first book being adapted into the 1998 film starring Oprah and Danny Glover. Other notable works include “Song of Solomon,” “The Bluest Eye” and “Sula.” Throughout her unparalleled career, Morrison wrote 11 novels in her life, many non-fiction books, five children’s books, two plays, two short fiction stories and one libretto. She also wrote numerous essays and university papers. Morrison is also sort of relevant right now for a very unfortunate reason. On politics, she penned an essay shortly after the election of Donald Trump for the New Yorker titled “Mourning for Whiteness,” calling out white supremacy. A documentary about Toni’s life was made also earlier this year called “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” In a statement released by Princeton University, where she taught, the author’s family called her “our adored mother and grandmother.” “She was an extremely devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt who reveled in being with her family and friends,” the statement said, concluding as follows: “The consummate writer who treasured the written word, whether her own, her students or others, she read voraciously and was most at home when writing. “Although her passing represents a tremendous loss, we are grateful she had a long, well lived life.” She leaves behind two children — her sons, Slade and Harold — and an endless array of citizens around the world who have been influenced by her works and her words. May Toni Morrison rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

Former Obama Staffers Speak Out Against Trump Era Racism, “We Are Patriots And We Have Plenty To Say About The Direction This Country Is Headed”

Source: DEA / M. BORCHI / Getty 149 Former Obama Staff Members Speak Out Over Racist Rhetoric From President Trump We will not sit idly by and watch America bow to racism under the leadership of Donald Trump . The message could not have been clearer. If you have not read it yet, we BEG you to read the Washington Post op-ed penned by Clarence J. Fluker, C. Kinder, Jesse Moore and Khalilah M. Harris first published on Friday, July 26th, which was signed by 149 former Obama staff members all in agreement with the words which eloquently state we too are Americans, we too are Patriots, we too have love for our country so much so we will not sit idly by and act as if the racist rhetoric being wielded by the man in the highest political post of our country is not absolutely and completely abhorrent. OUR Forever President — Barack Obama himself took to Twitter Saturday to proudly retweet the message: I’ve always been proud of what this team accomplished during my administration. But more than what we did, I’m proud of how they’re continuing to fight for an America that’s better. https://t.co/0cfDltjueP — Barack Obama (@BarackObama) July 27, 2019 We won’t post the full letter, which you can read HERE , but we’re including a brief excerpt below, via the Washington Post: We stand with congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, as well as all those currently under attack by President Trump, along with his supporters and his enablers, who feel deputized to decide who belongs here — and who does not. There is truly nothing more un-American than calling on fellow citizens to leave our country — by citing their immigrant roots, or ancestry, or their unwillingness to sit in quiet obedience while democracy is being undermined. We are proud descendants of immigrants, refugees and the enslaved Africans who built this country while enduring the horrors of its original sin. We stand on the soil they tilled, and march in the streets they helped to pave. We are red-blooded Americans, we are patriots, and we have plenty to say about the direction this country is headed. We decry voter suppression. We demand equitable access to health care, housing, quality schools and employment. We welcome new Americans with dignity and open arms. And we will never stop fighting for the overhaul of a criminal-justice system with racist foundations. YES. YES. And YES. To all of this. We’re so glad that these people are speaking up and speaking out. Right now we should all be shouting at the top of our voices. This is our country too. America cannot be great without us. PeriodT! Writing Op-Eds, speaking on networks , all of these are mechanisms to combat racism but what we need more than anything is to vote against the people who continue to use these tactics! All 149 names and their former titles are listed on the flip

Isabel Rock Finally Addresses Pesky Pregnancy Rumors

Isabel Rock has said very little over the years. She hasn’t really had to, of course, as she wasn’t dating Jacob Roloff back when he was a prominent cast member on Little People, Big World The couple mostly got serious after Jacob quit the show back in the summer of 2016. But now, just over a month before she becomes Mrs . Jacob Roloff, Rock has felt a need to speak out. That’s what happens when strangers are all up in your personal business; heck, all up in your person itself, specifically your womb. This is what we mean: Earlier this week, Little People, Big World patriarch Matt Roloff shared a gallery of images to his Instagram account, including a snapshot featuring himself posing alongside his son and future daughter-in-law. Matt did so because he and Jacob had just picked out the latter’s suit for his September 7 wedding. “Look who popped over for a visit ..they wanted to show me the final look of the New Man!” Matt wrote as a caption, adding: “Working hard every day getting the farm shaped up for their big day.” Indeed, Jacob and Isabel will be exchanging their vows on Roloff Farms, just as Tori and Zach Roloff did and just as Audrey and Jeremy Roloff did. However, instead of focusing on these nuptials and/or on Jacob’s fancy look… a bunch of social media honed in on Rock’s stomach and wondered if there was a person growing inside of there. Pretty inappropriate, right? And yet something that happens all the time online. “Are they expecting?” one person asked. “She looks pregnant,” another remarked. “She sure does look pregnant to me that’s for sure,” wrote a third individual. But Rock didn’t let this speculation linger for too long, jumping into the Comments section and writing simply: “ Definitely not pregnant ,” she wrote. “ Just a flowy dress .” Jacob and Isabel got engaged in December of 2018 while vacationing in Iceland, with Roloff dropping to one knee with a ring concealed in a handcrafted wooden box. Wrote Rock on Instagram of the romantic gesture: “My heart started beating so fast. He handed me my gift; a tiny black box, inside of it a tiny bag, with a stunning turquoise ring. I slowly pulled it out, and to my complete surprise, it was a ring we had seen earlier that day — a handmade Icelandic ring that was my favorite color. “But it was definitely not an engagement ring! “Tripping over my words I said, ‘Oh.. it’s.. it’s beautiful,’ because it was, but I will admit I was completely thrown off!” Concluded Rock at that time: “Right then, Jacob spun me around and said, ‘Alright, one more gift…’ and that is the moment he got down on one knee and asked the question I’d been longing to hear… “He asked with a ring box he had hand built out of real wood and my dream ring. I said ‘YES!’ and leapt into his arms to hug him and we both cried.” View Slideshow: Little People, Big World: The Roloffs’ Shocking Scandals… Exposed! [Updated]

Whitney Port Shares Miscarriage Heartbreak With Fans

Sad news out of the world of reality television today. Whitney Port — most recently of MTV’s The Hills revival — has revealed in an emotional Instagram post that she’s suffered a miscarriage. Port married Tim Rosenman in 2015, and the couple welcomed a son named Sonny in 2017. Just weeks ago, Port learned that she was pregnant — and not long thereafter, she was informed that she would be unable to carry the child to term. While that’s always heartbreaking news, Port’s candor is something of a silver lining, as she’s been discussing the incident openly, as well as the wide array of emotions she felt as a result. And we’re guessing many women are feeling less alone as a result of her words. Whitney Port Opens Up About Miscarriage On Tuesday, Port posted a video of herself discussing the miscarriage during an appearance on her With Whit podcast. While she was obviously devastated by the loss of the fetus, she admits that she was suffering severe anxiety about the prospect of another pregnancy, particularly considering the complications she experienced while carrying her first child: “The amount of various emotions I felt in the past couple weeks have been extreme…from shock to sadness to relief, which then led to guilt for feeling that relief,” Port said. “My identity has been shaken in regards to who as a mom and human being,” the 34-year-old continued. “I’m currently in the process of learning to accept that my feelings are valid no matter what they are. Whether or not people feel the same way as me or not. “They are my personal emotions that are the result from my own journey.” Port says the early weeks of her second pregnancy were intense and she braced herself for the complications she experienced the first time around: “What’s weird is that I was having massive pregnancy symptoms for the first six weeks, I was really nauseous and really exhausted,” she shared with listeners. “And all of the sudden they kind of just stopped, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, maybe the second pregnancy is gonna be amazing and I’m not gonna feel all this crap that I felt.'” Port added: “And I was really thinking glass half full at that moment.” “I feel like I’m not pregnant.” Whitney recalls telling her husband, adding that she wasn’t experiencing “any symptoms anymore.” “We went to go get an ultrasound and my doctor said things didn’t look good but that it was still kind of too early to tell,” Whitney said on her show. “And he said to wait it out. It felt so horrible to be in this limbo position.” “We ended up going back to the emergency room for a second time because the bleeding got worse,” Port revealed. “And we got confirmation that my blood level was at a 3,000 and at the point I was in my pregnancy it’s supposed to be at about 10 to 20,000, and we found out that there was no heartbeat and there should’ve been a heartbeat at that point.” Whitney went on to admit that she’s surprised by some of the emotions she’s experienced in the two weeks since the miscarriage occurred: “I can’t say I feel relieved,” Whitney said. “I feel sad because the whole thing is just traumatic, it’s traumatic to think about your body going through this and something being in you that could have been someone like a Sonny or something,” she added. “I feel sad but, I do also feel happy that my body is still my own right now and that this isn’t an extra thing we didn’t plan for.” As for whether or not she and her husband will try again for a second child, Port says that remains undecided  “If this happens on its own, then amazing, it is meant to be and we will have a second child. And if it doesn’t happen, then we’ll discuss it when we’re both ready to have it,” she says. Port admits to still feeling “scared” about the prospect of another pregnancy and says she experienced mixed emotions after learning that her pregnancy was not viable. “I felt extremely ashamed and guilty that I felt this way,” Whitney said. “And so, these layers of shame and guilt make it so hard to talk about.” We can see why Whitney would feel confused by her own emotions. But we’re guessing millons have felt the same, and no doubt many of them are glad that she shared her story. View Slideshow: The Hills Premiere: 13 Crazy Moments We Still Can’t Get Over

FaceApp Conspiracy?: Russians Now Own All Your Old Photos & Information

Source: MStudioImages / Getty Faceapp had social media going crazy over the past week with people posting pictures of what they would look like as seniors.  It even started a viral hashtag called the #faceappchallenge but now people who participated may have voluntarily given their information to Russians. Experts are concerned about the privacy and security of the app and it’s permissions and what it could be collecting from it’s users.  Basically if you have the app the Russians who created the app can now have access to your personal information and identity which could pose a problem on many levels. Via NYPost: But be warned: FaceApp, which you grant permission to access your photo gallery, also includes in their Terms and Conditions that they have the right to modify, reproduce and publish any of the images you process through its AI. That means that your face could end up being commercialized — or worse. UK-based Digitas strategist James Whatley said on Twitter, “You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable… royalty-free… license to use, adapt, publish, distribute your user content… in all media formats… when you post or otherwise share.” That means they can also use your real name, your username or “any likeness provided” in any format without notifying, much less paying, you. They can retain that material as long as they want, even after you delete the app, and you won’t be able to stop them. Even those who set their Apple iOS photo permissions to “never,” as  Tech Crunch points

Iowa Public Official Fired After Shouting Out Tupac In A Company Email To 4,300 Employees

Source: Al Pereira / Getty We may have found the biggest Tupac fan in the Midwest. And no, it’s not who you think it is. The Associated Press reports that 66-year-old Jerry Foxhoven , formerly Iowa’s Department of Human Services Director, was let go from his job after sending a Tupac-referencing email to all 4,300 of the agency’s employees. Now, other folks had complained about Foxhoven’s Tupac themed emails before and according to company documents, Foxhoven released about 350 pages worth of emails with the words “Tupac” or “2Pac” sent to and from him during his two years at the Department. Want your mind blown? This, is Jerry Foxhoven. He would host “Tupac Fridays” parties in the office, traded lyrics with employees and marked his own 65th birthday with a Shakur-themed party, complete with “Thug Life” decorated on the cookies. All in all, Foxhoven seemed to be inspired by the “So Many Tears” rapper, telling colleagues that he was inspired by lyrics that included: “it’s time for us as a people to start makin’ some changes.” Foxhoven’s final email told his co-workers to celebrate Father’s Day  and Tupac’s birthday (June 16th) by listening to tracks like “Changes” and “Ambitionz Az A Ridah” among others. The next day, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds told him to resign. Yeah, all because HE didn’t forget about Pac, even if some employees didn’t care for the slain rapper. But, nobody knows for certain why Foxhoven was let go from his position. And according to Iowa law, state agencies are required to release the “documented reasons and rationale” when employees resign instead of being terminated. “As the governor has said, a lot of factors contributed to the resignation of Jerry Foxhoven and now Gov. Reynolds is looking forward to taking DHS in a new direction,” spokesman Pat Garrett said. Joy-Anna Duggar Shares First Photo Since Miscarriage Reveal

Joy-Anna Duggar will never move on from the tragedy that befell her and husband Austin Forsyth a few weeks ago. This is simply an awful fact of life for anyone who has suffered a miscarriage. But the reality star has , in a way, moved on from the universe-altering event on Instagram at least. For the first time since revealing to her followers that she lost her baby after being pregnant for five months, Joy-Anna has shared an image on social media. It’s simple, yet beautiful, with the camera focused on Joy-Anna and Austin’s one-year old son, Gideon, fast asleep on her mother’s lap. Duggar simply wrote “zzz” and included a baby face emoji and a blue heart emoji as a caption to this precious snapshot. Check it out for yourself: Duggar and Forsyth got married in May of 2017 and welcomed Gideon just a short time later. They surprised fans by announcing earlier this year that they were expecting a sibling for their young son… only to then confir, on July 4 that Joy-Anna had lost this second child. “Today marks one week since we heard these words… ‘So this is your baby’s heart (pointing to the ultrasound screen). I don’t hear a heartbeat or see any movement.’ We had gone in for our 20-week ultrasound and gender reveal. It was a baby girl,” the couple wrote at the time. They went on to add: Although we don’t understand why, God has given us unexplainable peace and comfort during this very difficult time. Yes, it still hurts and we have cried countless tears, but we know that we can trust the Lord. In the words of King David after the loss of his baby, ‘I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me’ (2 Sam 12:23). We don’t grieve as those who have no hope because we trust that we will see this little one again. A couple days after breaking this terrible news, Duggar and Forsyth posted a photo of their stillborn daughter . “We only had her for 20 weeks, Life is fragile and precious,” wrote Joy-Anna and Austin as a caption to this photo, adding: “So thankful the Lord gave her to us for that short time! She will be in our hearts forever! Thank you all for your love and support! We can feel the prayers! “Thank you, @carlinbates98 for coming to town to be here for me and for doing my hair and makeup for pictures with our little girl!” The couple also said it had named their little girl Annabell Elise. In response to the miscarriage, many of Joy-Anna’s well-known loved ones responded with message of sorrow and support. Wrote Jessa Seewald: @AustinandJoyforsyth our hearts are breaking over your loss. Such beautiful words you’ve written in your post. Annabell will forever be in our hearts. We love you all and are praying for God’s peace and comfort during this time. And Anna Duggar: Austin and Joy we love you both so much and my heart aches for your loss, we look forward to meeting Annabel Elise one day in heaven! Lamar Odom Comeback Ends: "Embarrassed" Baller Booted From Big3 League

For a while there, it looked as though former NBA star Lamar Odom was on the verge of a comeback. Sure, he might never make it back to the bigs again, but Odom’s new memoir earned him sympathy from fans who may have previously written him off as a hard-partying hedonist who set fire to both his career and his marriage by indulging his love of prostitutes and hard drugs. Perhaps even more importantly, Odom returned to the sport he loves, having earned a spot in the Big3 summer league founded by Ice Cube. Unfortunately, Lamar’s time on the court didn’t last very long. TMZ is reporting today that Odom has been cut from the roster of the Big3 team bafflingly known as the Enemies. Former NBA stars Baron “Boom” Davis, Bonzi Wells, and Jermaine O’Neal were also deactivated for the remainder of the season, but it was Odom’s name that attracted the attention of the gossip world. And many feared the worst. After all, Odom’s talent for squandering golden opportunities might be matched only by Hillary Clinton, and many feared that he had messed up yet another second chance by returning to the bad behavior that ruined his marriage to Khloe Kardashian. But if there’s a bright side to this situation, it’s that Odom seems to have been cut loose as a result of his performance on the court, not wild nights that might land him in front of a judge. The league issued a statement today clarifying that 39-year-old Odom and his cut companions simply no longer have what it takes to compete at a professional level? “As the premier professional 3-on-3 league in the world, we are always striving to improve the quality of both the live and broadcast experience for our fans as well as the level of competition,” read the statement. In other words, no one wants to see Lamar Odom and Boom Davis chasing each other around unless one wants the other to get off his lawn. Insiders say Odom is “embarrassed” by the league’s decision, but has come to accept it. Lamar barely played for the Enemies, posting just 2 points and 4 rebounds so far this season. And his latest public confessions probably weren’t great for the fledgling Big3 from a PR perspective. Among the revelations contained in Lamar’s book were the facts that he slept with over 1,000 women (with many of those conquests occurring while he was married, and that he once threatened to kill Khloe Kardashian while high out of his mind on a potent cocktail of drugs. And you probably thought no one could make Tristan Thompson look like a good partner! Of course, Tristan would probably humiliate Lamar one-on-one, but that’s a conversation for another time!
