Obama: US on Target to Reduce Emissions by 17%

Well there’s an interesting statement. In Rolling Stone’s recently published and widely circulated interview with Barack Obama , the president explains his thoughts on climate change and current US energy policy. Discussions of his frustration with the failure to pass national climate policy, how a new strategy to implement clean tech is needed, and so forth seem more than reasonable–and then he says this: The progress that we’re making on renewable energy, the progress that we’re making on retrofitting buildings and making sure t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

New Drug Test May Save Endangered Vulture from Extinction

Image credit: Wikimedia Commons In 1985, the Indian white-backed vulture was described as one of “the most abundant large bird of prey in the world.” Since then, things have changed dramatically. Since the 1990s, the population has dropped by more than 97 percent and conservationists believe that the species is reaching the point of unavoidable extinction. The culprit: Diclofenac, a bovine painkiller that poisons the birds. In spite of bans, … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Tiny turtle causes taxiing plane to return to gate

ATLANTA (AP) — A caged, 2-inch turtle traveling with a 10-year-old girl caused a crew to turn around a taxiing plane, take the girl and her sisters off the flight and tell them they couldn't bring their pet along. The sisters threw the animal and cage in the trash and returned to their seats crying Tuesday after AirTran Airways employees on the jetway said they couldn't care for the turtle while their father drove to retrieve it. Two days later, however, Carley Helm was reunited with Neytiri even though at first the family thought the pet was emptied with the trash. Carley was heading home to Milwaukee after visiting her father in Atlanta with sisters Annie, 13, and Rebecca, 22, when the flap unfolded. Rebecca said the three were led onto the jetway and told they'd have to get rid of the baby red ear slider — named Neytiri after the princess in the movie “Avatar” — if they wanted to reboard. “I asked, 'What do you mean get rid of it?' and they said throw it away,” she said. “I was very sad, and I felt bad for my littlest sister because it was her first pet and she was planning to take care of it herself.” While the sisters say they were told to put the animal in the trash, AirTran says they chose that themselves, despite an offer to fly later at no extra charge. AirTran company policy bars animals other than cats, dogs and household birds in the cabin, said spokesman Christopher White. White cited a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that says the reptiles have been known to carry salmonella bacteria. The sisters say they made it past security screeners and an AirTran gate agent before boarding. One flight attendant told them to stow the cage under their seat, they say. But with the flight rolling toward its takeoff, an attendant told them the turtle wasn't allowed in the cabin. Rebecca Helm called their father, and he began driving back to the airport. She asked an AirTran employee to make arrangements with her father to look after the pet until he could get there, but the employee refused. “I basically had to make a really fast decision because the whole plane was being delayed,” Rebecca Helm said. The bin wasn't very full and she thought the turtle could be found easily once her dad arrived, she said. Rebecca twice declined the offer to take a later flight, White said. “We don't have the personnel or the facilities to care for people's pets,” White said. Rebecca asked if throwing the pet away would allow for them to get back on the flight, White said. The gate agent did not tell the sisters what to do but said they could not get on the plane with the turtle, White said. “At no time did any AirTran Airways crew member order or suggest that they put the turtle in the trash,” he said. Half an hour later, the sisters' father called, saying he wanted to come look through the trash, White said. The gate agent looked, couldn't find the turtle and assumed it had been emptied, he said. The airline, a unit of AirTran Holdings Inc. discovered Wednesday that the ramp supervisor had rescued the turtle from the trash “out of his own compassion” and given it to another crew member, who took it home for her 5-year-old son, White said. AirTran told that crew member the original owners wanted it back, and the airline arranged for the turtle to fly as cargo to Milwaukee on Thursday, White said. The sisters' mother reported what happened to animal rights group PETA, which sent a letter to AirTran demanding an investigation and disciplinary action. For their part, Rebecca Helm says her sisters “are very happy to have the turtle back.” http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Tiny-turtle-causes-taxiing-apf-1122992999.html?x=0 added by: MotherForTruth

Sharron Angle’s Fringe Third Party Sponsored Virulently Anti-Gay Flier In ’90s

The far-right third party that Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle called home in the 1990s supported abolishing “the debt money system” and ran a vitriolic anti-gay insert in state newspapers that portrays LGBT people — or, as Angle's party called them, “sodomites” — as child-molesting, HIV-carrying, Hell-bound freaks, according to documents obtained by TPM. As we reported earlier this month, Angle was a member of Nevada's Independent American Party, a Christian conservative-cum-libertarian third party, for at least six years while she was getting her feet wet in politics in the 1990s. Independent American Party members told us that Angle switched to be a Republican in 1997 out of political expediency as she was preparing to make a run for state-level office. But the details of her time in the Independent American Party have been somewhat shrouded in mystery — which brings us to the two documents we obtained from that era. This is a 1992 petition, signed and circulated by Angle, that was part of a successful push to get the Independent American Party on the ballot. It features the Independent American manifesto — including the acknowledgment “That many Americans have ignored the Laws of God.” The petition says that party members support a proposed Constitutional amendment called the Liberty Amendment, which would “compel the Federal Government to halt its unconstitutional programs and wasteful expenditures such as foreign aid and welfare corruption. It will prohibit the financing of the New World Order with American taxes.” The amendment would also “eliminate the debt money system and restore Constitutional money to the people. It will thus eliminate the contrived purposes for income taxes and will abolish the Marxist graduated income tax and the fearful I.R.S. It will transfer public lands in the West to State ownership and control. It will restore freedom and prosperity to America.” Angle's campaign did not respond to a request for comment about her time in the party. In 1994, the party attracted considerable controversy by placing a 16-page advertising insert in Nevada newspapers promoting an amendment to the state constitution that would explicitly permit discrimination against LGBT people by businesses and government. Janine Hansen, the current executive director of the party and the editor of the '94 insert, told TPM earlier this month that “in general [Angle] agreed with our position on the issues.” The ad insert, which approvingly cites an 1814 legal treatise titled “Consequences of Sodomy: Ruin of a Nation,” is a digest of articles that refer to LGBT people alternately as “homosexuals,” “sodomites,” and “brazen perverts.” The insert includes virtually every homophobic myth ever conceived. Sample headlines include: “Homosexual Curriculum In The First Grade” … “Flawed Science Nurtures Genetic Origin For Homosexuality” … “No Constitutional Right To Be A Sodomite.” Here's a passage from an item headlined “True Homosexual Character Revealed”: Homosexuals argue that they are a peaceful and gay people. Yet … Dr. Paul Cameron of the Family Research Report writes “the top six U.S. male killers were all homosexuals.” Probably the coup de grace of the insert is the article “Can the HIV Virus Survive in Water?”. Writer Lorraine Day, M.D., concluded that yes, the virus can survive in the water. Citing medical journal articles, she raised the specter of HIV infection through public pools, hot tubs, and municipal water supplies. Independent American Party supporters could buy “Homophobia – No | Homonausea – Yes” bumper stickers for the special low price of $1. added by: TimALoftis

Silversun Pickups Revive The ’90s With ‘Royal We’ Video

Directed by famed photographer Matt Mahurin, clip features angsty, out-of-focus close-ups of the band and scenes of outstretched hands and skylines. By James Montgomery Silverson Pickups’ “The Royal We” Photo: Dangerbird Records You may have to take my word for it, but the 1990s were a totally insane decade. Especially when it came to music videos. It was a time when basically every artist got to do whatever they wanted when it came to making videos, no matter the cost, which meant that, sure, we got lots of super-epic “November Rain” types of clips and the occasional iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” kind of thing, but mostly, we got lots and lots of introspective, not-entirely-in-focus mood-pieces. Which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. I have fond memories of watching hours and hours of angsty, obtuse videos featuring shadowy dudes peering ominously off into space, or brightly lit (yet totally blurry) actors doing things that were supposed to be “deep.” White flashes were frequently used between cuts. There was usually water involved. Or spooky trees. Billowing fabrics with images projected onto them. Grainy, purposely scratched film. Symbolism. Animals running in slow motion. It was all pretty amazing, in retrospect. The reason I’m bringing all of this up isn’t to kick-start your week with a dose of nostalgia, but rather because the Silversun Pickups — a band who are frequently compared to ’90s mainstays the Smashing Pumpkins — have just unveiled their brand-new video for the song “The Royal We,” and, wow, is this thing airlifted right out of the Clinton era. Directed by famed photographer Matt Mahurin (who made a whole lot of these types of videos in the 1990s for acts like Metallica, Bush, Soundgarden and Blind Melon), “Royal We” is like a four-minute walk down memory lane. Angsty, out-of-focus close-ups of the band (or, alternately, angsty, in-focus-yet-shiftily-lit close-ups.) Blurry, brightly colored scenes of outstretched hands and skylines and dudes sprinting towards something. Bizarre, presumably symbolic shots of stuff like a torso with a crumbling tower for a head. Oh, and as an added bonus, Mahurin makes most of the footage skip and stretch, sort of like you’re watching the whole thing on a VCR (adjust the tracking, stat!). Seriously, this thing made me feel 13 again. And that’s what I like best about it. I’m guessing that the guys — and gal — in SSPU are about the same age as I am, which means they undoubtedly grew up watching the exact same videos I did … which means that this is sort of a dream come true for them. It’s exactly the same kind of video I’d make, had I the budget or wherewithal. Perhaps it will inspire a ’90s revival, and I’ll get to enjoy even more really weird videos. My inner 13-year-old can still dream, can’t he?
