When The Check Stop Coming In: Ex-NFL Star Irving Fryar And Mother Convicted In $1.2 Million Mortgage Scheme

The Former Eagles star and his mother could face up to 10 years each, yikes! This is what  Philly news is reporting: Former Philadelphia Eagles player Irving Fryar and his mother, Allene McGhee, were found guilty Friday of charges of conspiracy and theft by deception stemming from a $1.2 million mortgage scheme that prosecutors said victimized seven lending institutions in South Jersey and Philadelphia in 2009. Fryar, a Pro Bowl wide receiver who retired from the NFL in 2001 after playing for 17 years with four teams, and his mother, a retired school bus driver from Willingboro, showed no emotion as a jury in Mount Holly announced the verdict after more than 11 hours of deliberation. After the jury of nine women and three men was ushered out, McGhee sobbed softly and stayed in her seat for several minutes in apparent shock, as Fryar and two supporters went to hug and console her. Fryar, 52, and McGhee, 74, face a maximum of 10 years in prison when they are sentenced by Superior Court Judge Jeanne T. Covert on Oct. 2.   Seems like Philly has taken a lot of losses this week! We hope their luck turns around.   Splash News

The time has come to make a decision about whether or not George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin Jury May Have A Verdict In The George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin Trial Today Via OrlandoSentinel Will there be a verdict today in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial? No one knows how long the jury will deliberate. The panel resumed deliberaions at 9 a.m. today to decide whether Zimmerman is guilty or not not guilty of committing a crime when he shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. A verdict is possible as soon as today in the closely watched, ultra-high-profile trial. The jurors began the process on Friday at 2:30 and deliberated until 6 p.m. when they asked to break for the day. Once the jury has reached a verdict, it could be about one hour before that verdict is announced. The jury can find Zimmerman guilty of second-degree murder, guilty of manslaughter, or not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. If the jury finds Zimmerman guilty of second-degree murder, he faces a maximum of life in prison. If they find him guilty of manslaughter, he faces a maximum 30-year prison sentence. The verdict will be read in Circuit Court Judge Debra Nelson’s courtroom at the Seminole County courthouse about an hour after the jury decides. There is a lot of speculation about exactly how long the jury will deliberate, but one thing is for sure, we will be watching every minute until we get word that a verdict has been reached. John Edwards Jury Deadlocked, Sent Back to Continue Deliberation

A federal judge told jurors in the John Edwards trial that they must continue deliberating, just moments after the jury announced a verdict – on one of six counts. The courtroom was briefly thrown into confusion this afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. All sides were told a verdict had been reached, but once in court, the jury announced it had only reached a unanimous verdict on Count 3 of the indictment. On the other five counts, the jury was deadlocked. The Count 3 verdict was not read. Edwards’ defense team asked the judge to accept the verdict on Count 3 and declare a mistrial on other charges. The judge considered, but denied that motion . Judge Catherine Eagles told the jury, who has been deliberating in the case since May 18, must continue to work towards a verdict on the other charges. The trial centers around whether Edwards illegally received over $700,000 in donations to conceal his illicit affair and illegitimate child with Rielle Hunter . The nearly month-long trial at times sounded more like a steamy soap opera about his life than a trial on the intricacies of campaign finance rules. Charged with six counts of violating federal campaign laws, Edwards was accused of soliciting money to cover up his affair and advance his election bid. If convicted, Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison and be fined more than $1 million, although it is unlikely he will face the most severe penalties. Any lies John told, his lawyers, were to keep the affair a secret from his wife, Elizabeth, who was dying of cancer, not to advance his political career. In short, being an ass is not illegal.
