Viola Davis On Maids In Movies: “People Need To See An African-American In The 21st Century Who Is Not In Servitude!”

Heck No, Them Maid Roles Gotta Go! Just in case you didn’t believe her the first time she said it, Viola Davis is speaking up LOUDLY about how modern cinema needs to portray black people — as something other than maids and slaves! Via Salon.com : Viola Davis, nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her role as a maid in the Civil Rights Era-set movie, “The Help,” will most likely never play a maid again. She recently told CNN, “I’m tired of that,” explaining, “Me and Octavia [Spencer], Aunjanue Ellis, Roslyn Ruff – we all played maids in ‘The Help’ and it was fabulous. It’s a fabulous story because we were personalized and all of those things, but I think that people need to see an African American in the 21st century integrated in the life of this town and family who’s not in servitude.” Except that in “Beautiful Creatures,” the book that Davis’s next movie is based upon, her character Amma is, again, a maid. She told the Hollywood Reporter that “[Director] Richard LaGravenese forbade us from reading the book. He said, “Do not touch the book.” (Naturally, Davis then got the book). “I read half of it and then I put it down because Amma is a maid, and I just said, ‘Ok, there’s nothing I can learn from this.’ ” But then LaGravenese changed the character for the film adaptation, who became a hybrid of Amma and a local librarian who has magical powers. Davis called it “a total reimagining of the character,” and said that even though it veers from the original text, the change makes sense in the greater context of the movie: “I’m going to be confident and bold and say I like it because, listen, I understand and I respect the book and I think the book is wonderful but this is 2013 and I think that when black people are woven into the lives of characters in 2013, then I think they play other roles than maids. I think that that needs to be explored and I hope that the audience is willing to suspend their disbelief and embrace what Richard LaGravenese has given them.” The movie explores the budding romance between Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lena Duchaness (Alice Englert), a mysterious newcomer with supernatural powers, set in a fictional South Carolina town. So basically she’s a maid who got promoted to a librarian with magic powers? AND they still made her wear dashikis — so is that really any better? We realize this is no joking matter and we’re glad Viola Davis has finally come to her senses. Black actresses have played enough maids for all time. They’ve also played enough hoes and dope dealers. When will Hollywood get the memo though?

Still I Rise: Viola Davis Says Eff The Hollyweird BS And Vows “I’ll Never Play A Maid Again!”

We hear ya Vi, ain’t nobody got time for that! After defending The Help from accusations that the roles were setting Black people back half a century last year, Hollyweird actress Viola Davis is finally admitting she is rather tired of playing a downtrodden black soul! Via US Weekly reports : Viola Davis has been there, done that. The actress, who earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as a Southern maid in 2011′s The Help, says she has no intention of playing a domestic worker ever again. In her latest film, Beautiful Creatures, Davis plays a librarian named Amma. The character is a hybrid of two characters, a maid and librarian, who first appeared in the popular book series by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. “I’m tired of that,” Davis, 47, tells CNN of playing a housekeeper. “Me and Octavia [Spencer], Aunjanue Ellis, Roslyn Ruff — we all played maids in The Help and it was fabulous. It’s a fabulous story because we were personalized and all of those things, but I think that people need to see an African American in the 21st century integrated in the life of this town and family who’s not in servitude.” Directed by Richard LaGravenese, Beautiful Creatures tells the story of an ordinary high school student, Ethan Wate, who falls in love with a potentially dangerous caster named Lena Duchannes. Davis praised newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert for bringing the characters to life on the big screen. “They weren’t thinking about, ‘Everything is resting on my shoulders, how are people going to receive the movie?’ That is not your job as an actor,” Davis tells CNN. “They were artists doing their job, in the moment, without vanity, with courage. And that’s what I respected about them, I really did. There’s no sense of stress in any of them. It was wonderful to watch.” Beautiful Creatures is in theaters Feb. 14. SMH. NOW she’s tired of playing a maid? She sure wasn’t talking this yang last year. Wonder what made her see the light? Oh yeah all the attention she got from playing a maid. Talk about irony. Do you think Viola will regret her vow if Hollywood comes to her with another blockbuster with lots of juicy maid parts? You can do it Viola. You is kind, you is smart, you is important!!!!

‘Beautiful Creatures’: Exclusive First Look At The Magical Set!

MTV News travels to New Orleans, where four stars of the upcoming YA adaptation talk about the supernatural romance. By Amy Wilkinson Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich on the set of “Beautiful Creatures” NEW ORLEANS — This is a story of boy meets girl. Or, more accurately, boy meets caster. What is a caster, you may be asking? In the southern gothic world imagined by “Beautiful Creatures” authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, casters have magical powers much like witches. Some can seduce men with one lick of a lollipop. Others can mutate their arm into a slithering snake. And still others can channel Mother Nature, bending weather to their will. This is the supernatural realm MTV News stepped into recently during our exclusive visit to the New Orleans set of “Beautiful Creatures.” While there we got the scoop on the adaptation straight from the film’s four young stars. “Lena is a young girl who also happens to be a caster, and she’s moved around — she’s moved to a lot of small towns and problems follow her,” Alice Englert told us of her character. “She’s just come to Gatlin, which is so insignificant it doesn’t have a Starbucks, etc., and [the theater] gets the titles of movie names wrong, and everyone thinks I’m a Satanist.” Just the usual adolescent angst, right? Englert conceded that underneath her supernatural surface, Lena struggles with issues any typical teen would: “I think Lena is like most girls when you feel massively insecure.” Few things can make one feel more insecure than being bullied by classmates, which just so happened to be the theme of the scene being shot during our visit. “We’re shooting a scene where there sort of begins this class persecution of Lena, and it’s very blatant,” Englert explained. “The girls in class are sort of this awful clique of girls, who are always being mean to her, and they start tormenting her,” chimed in co-star Alden Ehrenreich , who plays Lena’s love interest, Ethan. “It’s getting out of control, and she gets of control,” Englert concluded. This particular scene was just one of many effects-laden moments scheduled during production — one in which the windows of the classroom shatter in magnificent fashion. “I forgot that we were shooting, and I just stood there, like, [ drops jaw ], my eyes crossed. It’s going to look so ridiculous,” enthused Zoey Deutch, who plays mean girl Emily. “It’s really fun. It was insane. It was so loud. I really thought there was an earthquake.” Special effects aside, Deutch was also impressed with the film’s source material, counting herself among the many fans of “Beautiful Creatures.” “I loved the books, I thought they were incredible,” she said. “I thought they were smart and like nothing I’d ever read before. I’m an avid ‘Harry Potter’ fan, and [‘Beautiful Creatures’] was kind of my favorite series I’ve read since then.” But for those wanting to draw parallels between protagonist Ethan Wate and the Boy Who Lived (or even a certain sparkly vampire), Thomas Mann, who plays Link, said not so fast. “I think it’s definitely going to be unique from those stories,” he assured. “Beautiful Creatures” hits theaters February 15, 2013.
