The singer’s “Born This Way” won the first-ever Moonman for Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday evening. “I’m really proud of the ‘Born This Way’ video, and for it to be nominated is an absolute honor,” Gaga earlier told MTV News. The winner of the Best Video With a Message award, devoted to videos where music and social activism unite with positive messages that delve into some of the biggest issues of the day, was announced during the black carpet Pre-Show — just one of a handful of early awards. Adele won big, taking home three professional awards. She bested Gaga, Katy Perry and Kanye West to win Best Art Direction for “Rolling in the Deep.” The Brit chanteuse’s video also took Editing (over ‘Ye and 30 Seconds to Mars) and Cinematography (over Beyonc
Black carpet co-host Gomez was interviewing boyfriend Justin on Sunday. By Kara Warner Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez on the 2011 VMA red carpet Photo: FilmMagic Although MTV Mews’ Sway Calloway has enough interview experience to get the goods from the biggest and brightest stars, our special VMA Pre-Show co-host Selena Gomez proved to be just as skilled as our season pro when her interview subject was boyfriend Justin Bieber “I’m here with the one-and-only Justin Bieber,” Gomez said when she introduced the singer with a smile. “Who are you wearing? Can you please talk about that?” “I have my snake,” Bieber said, displaying a live pet reptile in his hand. “I have red pants and cheetah shoes.” “What’s your snake’s name?” Gomez expertly followed up. “My snake’s name is Johnson,” Bieber responded. “You’re up for Best Male Video,” Gomez continued. “I wanna know — you’re up against Eminem and Bruno Mars — do you feel a little nervous at all?” “You know, I’m just excited to be in the category with such amazing people,” Bieber said of his fellow nominees. “I’m just happy to be here.” “Rumored to be performing is Jay-Z and Kanye [West], and I know you like them both,” Gomez continued, adding a bit of her Bieber expertise to the conversation. “Are you excited to see them perform?” “Very excited,” Bieber said. “I heard that it was kind of a last minute thing, but I’m really excited.” Gomez, again relying upon her insider Bieber knowledge, prodded Bieber further, asking if he was more excited for Jay-Z and Kanye West, or another of his favorites, Beyonc
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley says ‘Dark of the Moon’ director Michael Bay usually had her ‘hiding underneath something that was about to explode.’ By Jocelyn Vena Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Photo: MTV News It’s almost a given that stunt work on a flick like “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” would be intense. The cast of the Michael Bay-directed movie expected as much, and they were more than up for the challenge. “I loved doing the stunts,” Rosie Huntington-Whiteley told MTV News, adding that she thought Bay “really respected a girl that could get her hands dirty.” “Dark of the Moon,” which hits theaters on June 29, is Huntington-Whiteley’s first appearance in the franchise but she seemed to revel in all of the action. “Everything was a first for me, so it was super exhilarating and exciting. … And we had a lot of fun filming. Every day was a crazy day on set and I think maybe half the time, I was in a harness or jumping through fire or I was running through gunfire or, like, hiding underneath something that was about to explode.” SEE PHOTOS OF ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY AND MORE STARS ON THE MOVIE AWARDS RED-CARPET. Fellow “Transformers” newcomer Patrick Dempsey was equally into it, dishing about the technology Bay used to show the cast how he wanted certain scenes to turn out. “I had some sequences; a lot of explosions,” he said. “He was very good about showing us what the sequence would be like on his iPad. That helped tremendously.” Three films in, Josh Duhamel and Shia LaBeouf were looking forward to getting in on the action, even if it seemed dangerous. “A lot of the times they don’t let us do stuff like that, but Shia and I both teamed up on Michael to let us do this one stunt,” Duhamel recalled. “It was pretty nuts. They tied us on to these latches and they yank you 50 feet up in the air and they yank you back up, but it turned out to be really fun and this is the reason why I love these movies, ’cause you get to do stuff you don’t get to do otherwise.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Twilight’ actor surprises 2011 MTV Movie Awards audience as he presents Generation Award to his friend. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon accepts her Generation Award at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images When it was announced that Reese Witherspoon would receive the coveted Generation Award at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards , we expected plenty of fanfare to surround her presentation and acceptance of the award — especially since her buddy Chelsea Handler and onetime co-stars Patrick Dempsey and Robert Pattinson were her A-list presenting team. What we did not expect, however, was Pattinson’s creative ad-libbing , which included an already-infamous “F bomb” and referring to Witherspoon as “33 percent lesbian.” MTV News caught up with Witherspoon right after her acceptance to find out what receiving the Generation Award meant to her and, most importantly, what she thought of the “Twilight” actor’s comments. About accepting the award in front of the massive Movie Awards audience, the actress said, “It was good — except for Rob Pattinson. I mean, really: He called me 33 percent lesbian, which was a gross underestimation of my lesbian-ness,” she joked. Really? What percentage would Witherspoon give herself, pray tell? “At least 55 [percent],” she said, laughing playfully. “I mean, what? Not enough.” (Check out photos of Robert Pattinson and other “Twilight” stars at this year’s big show!) With regard to Pattinson, Witherspoon seemed to shrug off whatever awkwardness he sustained during his presentation, and emphasized the fact that no matter what, the two of them are “really good friends.” “We laugh a lot,” Witherspoon said of their friendship, which began on the set of the 2004 drama “Vanity Fair” and continued as they worked together in this year’s romance “Water for Elephants.” “He’s cool. You have good friends, you have people you make lasting relationships [with]. It’s definitely a relationship I really value in my life,” she said sincerely. ‘Twilight’ actors Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner heat up red carpet. By Mary H.K. Choi Kristen Stewart at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Swoon. There’s nothing like an entire sea of sartorial goodies from an awards show to get the MTV Style squad good and excited, and Sunday’s (June 5) 2011 MTV Movie Awards red carpet was nothing short of bananas! You can check out our blow-by-blow palpitations on our live blog . Sharing the podium with none other than our Christian Siriano — and his darling boyfriend, jewelry designer/photographer Brad Walsh (who, by the way, was wearing the same grey, black grosgrain-accented suit as a baby cub member of the “Twilight” wolf pack) — we witnessed an awesome style potpourri. White was a huge trend for the night, and “The Last Exorcism” actress Ashley Bell sidled up in a gorgeous embroidered, knee-length dress cut demurely at the knee with the loveliest sweetheart neckline. Selena Gomez also wore a two-piece Giambattista Valli with a printed ivory top and a beige ruched miniskirt. “Gossip Girl” and “Monte Carlo” co-star Katie Cassidy wore a gorgeous floor-length ivory crocheted dress. Pssst! Floor-length was a huge hit for the night. Generation Award winner Reese Witherspoon, “Transformers” star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Snow White-to-be Lily Collins were all visions of ferocious awesomeness in animal print (leopard, tiger and leopard again, respectively), but the breakout aesthetic that dominated the red carpet was massive sequins, angular shards of jewels and beading galore. , Lil Mama (in Sherri Hill) and “Gossip Girl” and “Monte Carlo” co-star Leighton Meester all wore the sparkly stuff, but the curveball of the night had to be “True Grit” breakout actress Hailee Steinfeld not wearing Miu Miu (the brand for which she’s a spokesperson), instead sporting a wholly refreshing Louis Vuitton black, sequined lapel tuxedo! We just about dropped dead from the rampant elegance. Elle Fanning also threw us for a loop in a summery, saturated-hue pink romper with matching floral-printed wedge heels, both Dolce & Gabbana and marvelously age-appropriate. And though Kristen Stewart would typically, tidily slot nicely into the segment about beading, , while it did feature the glitz factor in scads, needed to be pulled out for a round of 360 mega-props. All that glittered was not gold, but row upon row of safety pins that gleamed menacingly and gorgeously. Not unlike a certain vampire’s twinkling nude torso in sunlight, no? This is the skin of a killer! Speaking of hot dudes, motorcycle jackets reined supreme on the red carpet as did dark jeans. Peter Facinelli (a.k.a. Carlisle Cullen. Team Edward forever! Also, let’s face it, Team Jacob, too) wore a moto, as did Jason Bateman and Taylor Lautner in head-to-toe D&G. Spider-Man-to-be Andrew Garfield, Kellan Lutz and Robert Pattinson all wore dark denim. All the better to stealthily march into our hearts, dreams, wakeful reveries, loins … too much? MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . Experts dish their advice for making the best-dressed list … and avoiding the worst-dressed list. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Paul Warner/WireImage The VMA show is a stomping ground for eclectic fashion — both good and bad. And that means that when the show kicks off on Sunday with everyone from Lady Gaga to Ke$ha to Katy Perry hitting the red carpet, people will be talking by the watercooler for days to come about what those fashionistas wore to the big show. In the past, Lady Gaga has stunned at the VMAs in her Victorian-style dress, Perry has embraced her pinup-girl roots, and Taylor Swift has sparkled and dazzled in sequins. While it’s unknown who will show up wearing what to Sunday’s big show, some fashion experts have some key advice for staying off the worst-dressed list. Faran Krentcil, Nylon magazine’s digital director, credits Gwen Stefani as a VMA fashion “do” and says that the only way to make the best-dressed list come Sunday is to make the effort to be on it. “I think you have to first decide that you want to be on the best list because some people just want attention. So if you want attention, then do whatever you want,” she advised. “What you need to do is get a good stylist to help you pick stuff out. You need to worry a lot more about what looks good on your body than what’s trendy and probably take whatever you’re the most proud of in your music and translate that into fashion.” Celebrity stylist Derek Roche advises that if you want to do VMA fashion right, resist the desire to overdo it. “I think the easiest way is not to think. It’s about simplicity,” he explained. “People think they have to go and be all dolled up and they have to compete with Rihanna and Beyonc
