E. Dan Talks Building Wiz Khalifa’s Sound ‘From Scratch’

Rolling Papers producer tells Mixtape Daily they found ‘natural rhythm.’ By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: Raymond Boyd/ Michael Ochs Archives/ Getty Images Mixtape Daily: Behind the Beats Fans might not know Pittsburgh producer Eric Dan (E. Dan for short), but they sure as heck know his work. After crafting six out of 14 tracks on Wiz Khalifa’s debut album, Rolling Papers , it shouldn’t be long before hip-hop heads start catching on. In 2003, Dan opened his own studio, ID Labs, outside of Pittsburgh. When a young Wiz Khalifa strolled in looking to record, the producer took the Taylor Gang general under his wing and has been working him every step of the way. “It’s been a great thing for [ID Labs] to be involved with an artist almost from his inception to where he is now,” E. Dan said. Where Wiz is now is at the top of the charts. It was the rapper’s #1 single “Black and Yellow” that spearheaded the Khalifa craze, helping Rolling Papers sell just under 300,000 copies since its March 29 release, but it was songs like the E. Dan-produced “The Race” and “When I’m Gone” that provided the LP with its substance. “With this album, we wanted to go in together from scratch,” said Dan, who splits production duties with his partner, Big Jerm. According to Dan, the bulk of the tracks on Rolling Papers came together organically, thanks to the comfortable relationship Dan and Wiz had been building for years. “Working with somebody from that young and working with him for so long, you fall into a natural rhythm, and over time you end up building this sound together,” Dan said. The recording session for Wiz’s “The Race” sticks out in E. Dan’s mind as an example of their overall organic chemistry. “Wiz fell asleep,” the producer recalled. “We put [the beat] together; a couple of hours later, Wiz woke up and said, ‘Whoa — that’s it!’ Next thing we knew, he jumped in the booth and did the song.” From there followed “Star of the Show,” “Get Your Sh–,” “Fly Solo,” “Cameras” and the intro, “When I’m Gone.” Dan has already worked with Pittsburgh breakouts Mac Miller and Chevy Woods, but said he is excited about branching out and adding to his resume. With upcoming production for international rap star K’Naan, it shouldn’t be long before the Pittsburgh producer is a worldwide name. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out . New West Artist Casey Veggies Is ‘Dreaming Big’

We profile Sleeping in Class MC for New West Week. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Casey Veggies Photo: MTV News Main Pick Rap Scholar : Casey Veggies Representing : Inglewood, California Mixtape : Sleeping in Class Real Spit : Casey Veggies is an MC who’s looking to make sure you don’t snooze on him or his talented peers, and MTV News is spotlighting the artist to start off New West Week . After catching the rhyme bug and getting positive feedback from some tracks he posted on MySpace, Casey released the Customized Greatly, Vol. 1 mixtape in 2007. Steadily improving with each new song, Odd Future knew what was up early, with Tyler the Creator throwing a couple of beats on Casey’s sophomore mixtape, Customized Greatly, Vol. 2 back in 2009. Last year, he dropped Sleeping in Class, an offering that further reveals the Inglewood, California native to be from the school of fresh beats and rhymes. “I didn’t really want Sleeping in Class … for people to think, ‘Oh he’s sleeping in class.’ That’s ignorant,” Casey told Mixtape Daily . “Really, it was like a sub-meaning and it meant that I was sleeping on everything that everyone else was telling me was the truth and what was right to do. That’s class, that’s the teacher talking to you. I was sleeping on that and I chose my own route. I chose to do what I wanted to do. So that means I’m sleeping, I’m dreaming big and I’m doing my thing.” We weren’t kidding about Casey being a student of the game, literally. While making a name for himself as an artist to watch from the West side of the map, the Inglewood High School senior made the honor roll with a 3.5 GPA. Commend the man. Joints to Check For

New West Week Kicks Off With Odd Future, Casey Veggies, More

We take you inside the re-emerging L.A. hip-hop scene, including exclusive interviews with Dom Kennedy, Nipsey Hussle, Tyga and more. By Steven Roberts Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: Roger Kisby/Getty Images In recent years, Los Angeles hip-hop has lost its place at the top of the rap game. Dr. Dre’s once ubiquitous G-Funk sound has largely disappeared thanks in part to the emergence of other super-producers, the growing dominance of southern hip-hop and the good doctor’s own absence from the scene. As a result (with the exception of the likes of Game and Snoop Dogg), the region has been mostly dormant on a national scale — until now. In recent years, a new wave of hip-hop acts has emerged, awakening a newfound interest in L.A. hip-hop culture. These artists have each individually carved their own lane without the help of their rap forefathers, creating a sound in contrast to the G-Funk/ gangsta rap sensibility. Beginning Monday, April 18, MTV News will be highlighting some of the best of L.A.’s talented and diverse acts with our weeklong coverage of the New West. The week kicks off with a mixtape double-feature highlighting Nipsey Hussle’s The Marathon and Casey Veggies’ Sleeping in Class. The up-and-coming Casey Veggies has made a lot of noise in the last few months — all while trying to graduate high school. Our second piece is on rising star Nipsey Hussle, who many fans once hoped would singlehandedly bring back the West. Nips’ momentum has slowed a bit in recent months, but the MC won’t be deterred. Nipsey has since embarked on his own marathon, planning to take his career to the next level. One crew that has been pegged as “the next big thing” is the much-hyped Odd Future . OF have made waves in recent months, though, the question remains whether the 10-man collective can take the next step to the mainstream. Then there’s the four-man group known as Black Hippy, made up of Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and School Boy Q. The foursome have made quite a bit of noise on the underground and it they seem to have already caught the attention of some important people in the industry. But it’s not just the MCs that have been making noise in L.A.; the city’s party and dance scene has also been the focus of hip-hop fans and spawned nationwide trends. The Jerk, the Dougie and Cat Daddy (all dances, of course) have not only brought about new crazes, but they’ve helped to shed light on how L.A. youth are reviving the culture. Finally, can Dom Kennedy, Pac Div and Young Money MC Tyga overcome their underdog status and make their mark outside of L.A.? Each act has been grinding for years, but can they defy the naysayers and prove they’re the cream of the crop? Before the New West Week kicks off, MTV News will be gearing up by talking to a few heavy hitters about the scene. The Doggfather Snoop Dogg talks to us about how the New West MCs have made a name for themselves without a co-sign from the old guard and also shares a little bit about his new artist, Pilot. And Renaissance man Chris Brown opens up to us on Friday about how he got inspiration from L.A.’s party and dance scene while rejuvenating his career. All week, we’ll be bringing you interviews with these artists to watch, breaking it down into four categories: the Black Hippy, the Future, Up and Coming, the Party and the Underdog. Each day, MTV News’ Sway and our hip-hop beat team will focus on a theme and recap the following day. Starting Monday, stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping to restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era. Keep it locked here for the next week for more on the West Coast up-and-comers!- Related Videos The New West: An In-Depth Look At L.A.
