New Documentary ‘Straight/Curve’ To Investigate The Controversial Body Diversity Issues In Fashion

New York City-based journalist and documentary filmmaker Jenny McQuaile has taken the leap of faith to tackle those issues head on and make a lot of designers, agents, and influencers in the industry very uncomfortable. Straight/Curve is a documentary film that deeply investigates the lack of diversity in fashion. But what began solely as a look into the evolution of the plus-size modeling world, grew to include both the thick and thin of the industry, and most importantly its praise with youth and whiteness. “Representation is important because every human being on the planet deserves to see themselves reflected and feel good about themselves,” McQuaile told Refinery 29 in a recent interview. “It is a really hard thing to wake up in the morning every single day and feel good about yourself, and it gets worse if it is compounded by the industry, and the media, and movies, and music…” Straight/Curve comes out early 2017. It’s a Curl Thing, the brand’s latest initiative, is a curly-haired campaign dedicated to aiding ladies with find the right product for their tresses… “Beauty is personal, and perhaps nothing is more personal than hair — and curly hair in particular!” Jessica Phillips Perez, Sephora’s director of hair merchandising, told Refinery 29. “Every curl is unique, which usually means [the customer] needs to try and try again to find the right regimen and product cocktail that works.
