Jessie J Demonstrates The Dangers Of Nail Art On ‘When I Was 17’

British songstress talks about her early toy-store job on this week’s episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. By Sterling Wong Jessie J on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News British singer/songwriter Jessie J kept herself plenty busy in her teenage years. On this week’s “When I Was 17,” the newcomer shares that as an ambitious teen, she signed up for singing lessons, and to pay for that, she worked at a major toy store in London called Hamleys. Working around fun toys and cute kids must have been a breeze, no? Not quite, according to Jessie! “I did ‘nail jazz,’ and so I was basically drawing snowmen, Christmas trees and smiley faces,” she explained. “And I used to lose my voice all the time ’cause I’d be like, ‘Hello! Would you like a nail jazz demonstration?’ ” Jessie’s voice wasn’t the only thing affected by the job. Because she had to paint so many nails each day, she actually injured her hand in the process! “It was hard work. I actually gave myself an injury. I had a specific muscle that I basically ripped, because I did so many nails every day,” Jessie says. Who knew working in a toy store could be detrimental to your health? Still, Jessie looks at the bright side of things. “The positive of the job was that now I can draw a snowman or a Christmas tree on anyone’s nails!” With her star firmly on the rise and with her debut album dropping in the U.S. on April 12, Jessie’s probably not going to be doing more nails anytime soon! “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Jessie J, Tyrese and Lupe Fiasco — airs Saturday (April 2) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Tyrese Talks Twitter, New Movies, Book And Album On The Cover Of JET Magazine

See original here:

Singer, actor and now author, Tyrese Gibson, caught up with the editors of JET magazine recently where he discussed topics like his upcoming roles in Fast Five (apart of the Fast and the Furious series) and another Transformers movie which are both scheduled to hit theaters this summer. Tyrese also spoke about his new album which is set to his stores this year and even his first book, “How to Get Out of Your Own Way”, which is set to hit bookstores this April. Looks like Tyrese has been pretty busy lately! The 32-year old also had time to do a full length interview and although all of the Q&A session did not make the magazine, we’ve got the scoop on the interview outtakes below. When Asked why he tweets about God so much : “It’s overwhelming. I’ve actually had people to say, ‘Man this dude talk about God so much, I’m-a unfollow.’ He don’t supposed to follow me. If you don’t want me talking about God, this is my Twitter page, it’s my timeline, I can shout out the man, I can shout out my source as much as I want to. Period. And at the end of the day, I feel like so many people are inspired and motivated by my story and my career and whatever else, I’m giving people an understanding that I didn’t make it this far in my life on talent alone. I’m a thinking man. I’m a God-fearing man. I recognize that God has blessed me and ordered my footsteps, but I’m also saying to everybody, “I’m doing the work.” Like, ain’t nobody given me nothing. Period. And so, I look at Twitter as me saying Thank you to all of my fans.” When asked why he doesn’t edit himself on Twitter: “It’s not something that I purposely do. It’s not coming from a space of rebellion. I just really want people to know some of the things I know. I’ve had people say, ‘I was a big fan of yours, but me loving you just went to a whole other level because of the things that you write and the things that you speak.’ And so, unfortunately this is a town and Hollywood in particular, where people can fall in love with who you appear to be, the surface, right? But then when they get off camera, there’s somebody completely the opposite.” When asked how he stays hungry: “I live my life by these words: ‘You can’t get points today for yesterday’s game.’ You won MVP last week, OK, get over it. It’s like, there’s another level to this thing and people like Will Smith and Denzel and Rev Run and … and like I got a few billion-dollar friends and multi-billion friends … these people have really messed up from showing me this life and lifestyle because I know that there’s a-whole-nother level of playing field out there that I can get to. Now, people get complacent – and I know if you leave this in there, it’s just gonna shake people up – people stop being inspired when they have more than all of their friends. If you do that, then you lose your motivation, because you the highest dude on your playing field. Gotta love that Tyrese.. and his tweets.. Read the rest over at JET. Ultra Music Festival: An Exclusive Tour Of The Grounds

2011 UMF will ‘be like nothing that anyone has ever seen before,’ festival president Russell Faibisch says. By Adam Stewart Photo: MTV News To the estimated 150,000 fans who will be passing through the gates of the most anticipated dance festival in the U.S., the building anticipation for the Ultra Music Festival is sort of like that of a child’s on Christmas Eve. Starting Friday night and running through Sunday, the Ultra Music Festival will be taking Miami by storm. As crews put the finishing touches on a behemoth two-week-long build, a camera-shy Russell Faibisch, president and executive producer of UMF, was gracious enough to give MTV News a tour of the festival grounds. “Ultra Music Festival 2011 is something that’s going to be like nothing that anyone has ever seen before, on any level,” Faibisch said. “The production is unlike any other festival. The caliber of lineup is second to none. Everyone who walks away from here will be trying to figure out what just happened!” The now three-day event will again be held in downtown Miami’s Bicentennial Park, which for this year will be arranged slightly differently than in years past due to a construction project that’s going on in its traditional footprint. “While we lost one corner to construction, we cleared out a lot of space on the other side of the park that wasn’t usable before,” Faibisch said. “When you add it all up, it about evens out, and the layout is actually much more functional for us this year.” Said shuffle has given birth to the insanely impressive Carl Cox and Friends arena, which will be home base for the man of the same name on Friday and Saturday. The arena will then be handed over to Dutch trance legend Armin Van Buuren, who will be broadcasting his “A State of Trance 500” show live via satellite to a worldwide audience estimated at 20 million. “We’re really proud of this thing. We brought it out from California — we’ve never had it out here in Florida before,” Faibisch said of the arena, which boasts two floors and an estimated capacity of over 10,000 all on its own. “We have VIPs on the second level inside, and the production that’s going on there is really going to be out of this world.” Adjacent to the mega-arena, several high-tech “domes” garnish the grounds, including the Tower of Ultra, which will play host exclusively to Dubstep artists on Saturday and Sunday, all to a visual 3-D display that is sure to make Skrillex blush during his live set. But the granddaddy of them all is, of course, the Ultra Main Stage, and with this year’s immense superstructure graced by the presence of Ti

‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Victorious At Box Office

The apocalyptic sci-fi flick had a $36 million opening in its first weekend in theaters. By Ryan J. Downey Michelle Rodriguez in “Battle: Los Angeles” Photo: Sony Pictures The big bad wolf and cartoon Martians were no match for aliens of a much more sinister kind at the box office over the weekend. “Battle: Los Angeles” was the #1 movie with a $36 million debut, while the sci-fi flick’s fellow new releases — “Red Riding Hood” and “Mars Needs Moms” — failed to muster the same type of excitement from moviegoers. While the UFO-invasion flick starring Aaron Eckhart (“The Dark Knight”), Michelle Rodriguez (“Avatar”) and Ne-Yo was victorious in the battle for tickets, it failed to conquer film critics. “Battle: Los Angeles” currently has a 33-percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Conversely, last week’s #1 picture, “Rango,” boasts an 89-percent rating with critics. The animated film about a lizard sheriff, which features the voice talents of Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Isla Fisher (“Wedding Crashers”), was #2 on the tally with a $23 million take, making its two-week total $68.6 million. (All box office figures are according to studio estimates.) Amanda Seyfried (“Mean Girls”) stars in “Red Riding Hood,” a PG-13 take on the classic children’s tale, which debuted at #3 after bringing in $14.1 million. The dark fantasy tale was the worst-reviewed film in the top 10 over the weekend, with a paltry 12-percent critical-approval score. “Red Riding Hood” was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, whose last movie was the first entry in the “Twilight” series, which, of course, launched an international box-office phenomenon. And Seyfried’s recently starring vehicle, the 2010 romantic drama “Dear John,” has earned more than $80 million. “The Adjustment Bureau” was #4, earning $11.4 million for a two-week total of $38.4 million. The mind-bending thriller stars Matt Damon (“The Bourne Identity”), whose “Green Zone” opened during the same weekend last year with just a $14.3 million debut. Damon’s new movie has already earned more than “Hereafter” or “Invictus” in just two weeks. With an estimated production budget of $150 million, it’s safe to say that “Mars Needs Moms” absolutely needed more viewers. The performance-capture Disney flick brought in just $6.8 million in its debut week to land in the #5 spot. The take was the lowest in history for a 3-D animated movie opening in more than 2000 theaters. (It premiered on 4,400 screens.) “Mars” was, of course, competing with another Disney kids movie, “Gnomeo and Juliet,” which was #10 after earning $3.5 million to bring its total to $89 million. “Gnomeo”‘s opening five weeks ago was four times that of “Mars.” The raunchy comedy “Hall Pass” was #6 six with $5.1 million for a $34.9 million total. “Beastly” continued to underperform with just $5 million for a $16.9 million total. Adam Sandler’s “Just Go With It” headed closer to the $100 million mark by adding another $4 million to its domestic haul. Its $93.9 million total, of course, is still nowhere near the $160 million-plus earned by the comic actor’s “The Waterboy,” “Big Daddy” or even the more-recent “Grown Ups.” Multiple-Oscar-winner “The King’s Speech” was #9 with $3.6 million for a $129 million total. For a small-budget historical drama, it’s getting surprisingly close to star Colin Firth’s biggest box-office successes — “A Christmas Carol” and “Mamma Mia!” — and has already passed pictures like “Shakespeare in Love” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” This weekend’s new releases will include “Limitless,” “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Paul.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battle: Los Angeles,” “Rango” and “Red Riding Hood.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
