Bill Cosby To D.A.: “Charges Are Meritless, I’m Ready To Fight”

Bill Cosby Says D.A. Is Shady In Case Against Him There’s an interesting twist in the charges brought up against Bill Cosby earlier today . The District Attorney in the case is not even sworn into office yet…and may be trying to “make an example out of him”, as promised to voters. Here’s the report via TMZ : Bill Cosby says he’s the victim of a district attorney trying to make a name for himself in a meritless case. Cosby’s attorneys are indignant, making it clear their client was the centerpiece of a hotly contested election for D.A. in Montgomery County, PA. It’s interesting … Kevin Steele, who went before reporters Wednesday to announce the sexual assault charge is not even the D.A. yet … he takes office Friday, and he ran on a platform of prosecuting Cosby. Cosby’s legal team says they plan to mount a “vigorous defense against this unjustified charge.”   Do you think Cosby has legs to stand on with this claim? Sopranos Creator David Chase Fulfills A Dream In Not Fade Away

Sopranos writer/director/producer David Chase resisted saying his latest venture, Not Fade Away is autobiographical, but it certainly resembles large swaths of his upbringing. Born in Upstate New York and raised in suburban New Jersey, he used to dream of becoming a successful drummer in a rock band. He is also unabashedly a fan of ’60s-era music and all those elements fit front and center in his first big return to the spotlight since The Sopranos had its final shot in 2007. Fittingly, James Gandolfini stars as the father in Not Fade Away , the title of course being an ode to the 1964 Rolling Stones cover of a song credited to Buddy Holly and Norman Petty. The film will have its Gala World Premiere as the Centerpiece of the New York Film Festival Saturday night. In the film, however, Gandolfini is anything but the underworld kingpin he is in the famous HBO series that made him a household name. The movie celebrates youth and more specifically, youthful angst. The so-called generation gap – a term that was popularized in the era – hits the audience over the head throughout the film. The conflict between accepting life’s conventions and the innate yearning for something different is liberally dished out. “The theme for the movie for me is the conflict between security and freedom,” Chase said at a Lincoln Center pre-gala screening Friday. “Humans are always in that conflict. There’s the desire to be babied and taken care of. And there’s the need to say, ‘go fuck yourself, I want to do what I want, I want to be free to do what I want.’ That’s what initially made me interested in doing this.” In Not Fade Away John Magaro stars as Doug, the nucleus of a pack of suburban Jersey kids who throw off the conservative shackles of their parents and grow their hair out, put on some funky threads, party at each other’s house’s like rock stars and dream of being – well, rock stars. He trades steely glances from his disapproving middle class father (Gandolfini) as he and his pack of spirited friends slowly but assuredly take on the physical and philosophical offshoots of the counter-culture. While it is a rock ‘n’ roll coming-of-age movie, there is no obvious end point. In the kids’ minds, they’re on the threshold of making it, though internal jealousies and conflicting ambitions hold them back. Still, the band gets progressively better and Doug, originally playing drums, eventually takes over lead vocals when it becomes apparent he has the better voice, which of course enrages the guitarist/singer and now competitor he in effect replaces, Eugene (played by Boardwalk Empire ‘s Jack Huston). Musician, songwriter, producer and all around rock legend Steven van Zandt served as executive producer/Music Supervisor on the film and told Chase that it was important to find actors who could ‘play the music.’ Still, Magaro said they were initially very green to music when they came on board. “We were terrible. We’d eek out a song and we were just terrible,” he said. “[At first] we’d look at David and he’d say something like, ‘that’s very encouraging…'” “Part of the authenticity is that most bands are cover bands, or they should be,” said Van Zandt – better known as Little Steven. “But these days, not so much. Most good bands – Rolling Stones, Beatles, E Street Band – they spent a few years covering songs, analyzing them [deconstructing] them and that’s how they learn.” Van Zandt helped create some original music for the movie, but if there’s a soundtrack that comes out – by all means get it. Mostly the band, however, does cover songs and the film is peppered with hits from the era. Just try and not wiggle a bit in your chair while watching this movie. Chase said the film has been an idea of his even before The Sopranos came along and it may be easily interpreted as a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The music and heartfelt performances do carry the film, though it did seem to fall a bit flat ultimately. “I don’t want to get into this thing about bragging about the ’60s. But I think I was lucky to live through that time,” said Chase. “I was living in one of the best musical eras in history. Music at that time was a way into everything. It’s how I learned about art, poetry, fashion, humor , film, politics. Music was everything. And I don’t think that’s the case anymore.”

At NYFF: Michelle Williams Talks Up Wry, Romantic My Week With Marilyn

It almost wouldn’t be the New York Film Festival these days without Michelle Williams, whose My Week With Marilyn marks the actress’s fourth effort in five years to grace Manhattan’s venerated fall-movie showcase. It’s inarguably her highest-profile work to splash down here — a world premiere debuting in the festival’s prestigious Centerpiece slot, glowing with awards-season ambition and hinging almost entirely on Williams’s risky interpretation of Marilyn Monroe. But come on: We’re talking about Michelle Williams here. Of course she pulled it off.

Please Describe the My Week With Marilyn Trailer to Me

My Week With Marilyn screens this weekend as the Centerpiece selection of the New York Film Festival, and seeing as I have every intention of hauling my sleeping bag and lantern and Boggle game over and camping out overnight for a seat, there is no way I’m compromising a shred of my anticipation by watching Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh and the rest of the principals gathered in the film’s first trailer. But! That doesn’t mean I won’t read your inspired descriptions of what happens within.

Ultra Music Festival: An Exclusive Tour Of The Grounds

2011 UMF will ‘be like nothing that anyone has ever seen before,’ festival president Russell Faibisch says. By Adam Stewart Photo: MTV News To the estimated 150,000 fans who will be passing through the gates of the most anticipated dance festival in the U.S., the building anticipation for the Ultra Music Festival is sort of like that of a child’s on Christmas Eve. Starting Friday night and running through Sunday, the Ultra Music Festival will be taking Miami by storm. As crews put the finishing touches on a behemoth two-week-long build, a camera-shy Russell Faibisch, president and executive producer of UMF, was gracious enough to give MTV News a tour of the festival grounds. “Ultra Music Festival 2011 is something that’s going to be like nothing that anyone has ever seen before, on any level,” Faibisch said. “The production is unlike any other festival. The caliber of lineup is second to none. Everyone who walks away from here will be trying to figure out what just happened!” The now three-day event will again be held in downtown Miami’s Bicentennial Park, which for this year will be arranged slightly differently than in years past due to a construction project that’s going on in its traditional footprint. “While we lost one corner to construction, we cleared out a lot of space on the other side of the park that wasn’t usable before,” Faibisch said. “When you add it all up, it about evens out, and the layout is actually much more functional for us this year.” Said shuffle has given birth to the insanely impressive Carl Cox and Friends arena, which will be home base for the man of the same name on Friday and Saturday. The arena will then be handed over to Dutch trance legend Armin Van Buuren, who will be broadcasting his “A State of Trance 500” show live via satellite to a worldwide audience estimated at 20 million. “We’re really proud of this thing. We brought it out from California — we’ve never had it out here in Florida before,” Faibisch said of the arena, which boasts two floors and an estimated capacity of over 10,000 all on its own. “We have VIPs on the second level inside, and the production that’s going on there is really going to be out of this world.” Adjacent to the mega-arena, several high-tech “domes” garnish the grounds, including the Tower of Ultra, which will play host exclusively to Dubstep artists on Saturday and Sunday, all to a visual 3-D display that is sure to make Skrillex blush during his live set. New Plan of Attack on Climate: Shame Big Polluters?

Photo: thewritingzone , Flickr, CC Yes, the climate bill is dead . No, we’re probably not going to see any meaningful legislation to address carbon pollution for years to come. But climate change is still occurring. Which means that if we’re going to head off the worst case scenarios, we’re going to have to find another route outside of Congress . 311 Talk Plans For ‘Ultimate’ 311 Day Show In Las Vegas

Thursday’s show in Las Vegas celebrating the band’s legacy could last as long as five hours. By James Montgomery 311’s “P-Nut” Aaron Charles Wills Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Are you at work today? You totally shouldn’t be. After all, it’s 311 Day, which is practically a national holiday at this point. Ever since March 11, 2000 — when 311 decided to perform an extended 46-song set at New Orleans’ State Palace Theatre — celebrating 311 Day has become an annual tradition for the band’s diehard fans. And every other year, the band gets in on the act as well, throwing an elaborate, certifiably epic concert that also doubles as a fan convention, party, and de facto rite of passage for 311 obsessives. This year, the band has taken over Las Vegas for a three-day extravaganza, the centerpiece of which is Thursday (March 11) night’s performance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. (MTV News has two fans on the ground in Sin City .) In anticipation of the show — which, rumor has it, will last five hours — we spoke to 311 bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills, who was already preparing himself for the looming marathon. “I don’t think we’d be able to physically play a show like this, not even once a month. But I’m ready. I’m trying not to think of it as this huge thing, because, if you think about it, the people who attend most rock shows are on their feet for the same amount of time,” Wills said. “It helps to see it from that side of things. We’re the entertainment, but of course the fans are going to be there with us the whole time. Then again, [frontman] Nick [Hexum] does do marathons, so I know he’s going to be ready. We all are, because we think of this as a huge opportunity to do something special, to play the ultimate show every two years for our most fanatic fans. It’s perfect.” And while Wills wouldn’t reveal any of the surprises the band has in store for fans at Thursday’s show, he did say that things are most certainly going to be epic. It’s only fitting, after all. “It’s just going be as big as it gets for us. It’s going be nuts,” he said. “I’ve only seen some of the sketches of what our set is going to look like, and it’s amazing. Our front-of-house guy designed it, and he’s kind of a nutcase, but we trust him.” And while the idea of playing the ultimate show before their ultimate fans is inspiring, what really drives Wills, and the rest of the band, is what 311 Day represents. It’s a gathering, a community, a chance for both the band and its fans to share the love. “It’s a great experience for our fans and for us. It’s a rite of passage. So we know we’ve got to bring it,” he said. “I know we will, too. This will be the best of the best, both from our fans and from us. And I know that at the end of the set, we’ll probably want to play even more. We’re out to chop heads off. Unless we’re playing reggae, then it’s a different vibe.” Related Artists 311

Monument lifted from Cleopatra’s underwater city

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt – Egyptian archaeologists on Thursday lifted an ancient granite temple pylon out of the waters of the Mediterranean, where it had lain for centuries as part of the palace complex of Cleopatra, submerged in Alexandria's harbor. The pylon, which once stood at the entrance to a temple of Isis, is to be the centerpiece of an ambitious underwater museum planned by Egypt to showcase the sunken city, which is believed to have been toppled into the sea by earthquakes in the 4th century. Divers and underwater archaeologists used a giant crane and ropes to lift the 9-ton, 7.4-foot-tall pylon, covered with muck and seaweed, out of the murky waters.

Diary of Stephanie Birkitt at Center of David Letterman Extortion Scandal

Excerpts from Stephanie Birkitt’s private diary make up the centerpiece of Robert Halderman’s alleged plan to extort $2 million from David Letterman. Halderman (who is also known as Joe Halderman) threatened to expose his inter-office affairs if he did not comply, according to law enforcement officials. The writings of Stephanie Birkitt was presumably not meant for the eyes of former lover Letterman, or a more recent one, CBS News producer Halderman
