Kim Kardashian and Kanye West may be back together, but that doesn’t mean they’re back on top. In years past, Kimye was a constant presence at big awards season events, but this time around, the couple wasn’t spotted working a single red carpet or after-party. And according to a new report from Radar Online, it’s not for lack of trying: “Kim was hoping to go to the Vanity Fair party, or really any party,” a source close to the Kardashians tells the site. “But she didn’t receive an invitation.” Instead of hobnobbing with the rich and famous, Kim and Kanye reportedly spent the evening on the couch, likely rocking matching pairs of $3,000 Yeezy sweatpants: “They watched the show at home,” the insider says. “Kim is often reminded that she is not a real star when she goes to any of these things, but she and Kanye really wanted to have a fun night out.” Yes, the Kim Kardashian sex tape may have been a hit online, but surprisingly, it hasn’t earned Kim much praise from critics. This isn’t the first year that the Wests have sat out the awards season party circuit, but the source says they were hoping to send a message by attending some of 2017’s biggest events. Kanye was hospitalized following an emotional breakdown back in November, and there have been murmurs about the state of his mental health ever since. On top of that, Kim and Kanye divorce rumors have been flooding social media non-stop. Popping up at a few red carpet soirees would have been an easy way for the couple to reassure fans and garner a few good headlines for a change. Interestingly, Kim’s not the only member of her family to feel put-off by Hollywood’s biggest night. Production sources say Kris Jenner threw a tantrum while covering the red carpet for E! News. The infamous momager was reportedly pissed that she wasn’t informed about the blue ribbons celebs were wearing to show their support for the ACLU. Jenner felt that she was made to look like a fool for asking about the significance of the ribbon on air. Sounds like the Trumps might not be the only family who chooses not to tune in to next year’s ceremony. View Slideshow: Kim Kardashian: 19 Reasons Why She Isn’t That Terrible

We love spreading the word about talented black folks! And it’s even better when the said talent is an exceptional actress and musician with great pipes and an equally fabulous husband. Such is the case with Alicia Hall Moran. Here’s a little info via Ozy.com : If you’d asked Alicia Hall Moran how she was feeling a year ago, fresh off the heels of a Broadway run, the Harlem-based opera singer would sigh and say it was like finally getting “off the treadmill.” It’s an understatement, considering she wasn’t just in the ensemble of Broadway’s Porgy & Bess; she was also the understudy for Audra McDonald’s Bess and performed the role every Wednesday. Juggling eight shows a week, rehearsals for two parts, five-year-old twins, a weeklong commission she was asked to do for the Whitney Museum Biennial and, you know, sleep, left her feeling depleted — and energized at the same time. And it also explains why she has signed back on, heading out in November to star as Bess in the national tour. “Doing theater every day is like pushing a rock up a mountain. There’s the exertion of always moving it forward and also going out there, raw and wondering, ‘How is this going to end?’” she admits. “But with Porgy & Bess, it’s like being in the Olympics. I learned to do a vault on a jacked-up ankle and nail that thing!” But nailing hard-to-execute routines has been the norm for Hall Moran throughout her career. “I’ve departed from the classical mold, which is that you’re assigned music, you learn it and you perform it,” explains the mezzo-soprano. “I’m co-creating the music now, which is highly improvisatory.” That sounds fancy and hard and innovative, but what does it actually mean? It means that there are going to be more creations like the Motown Project, where she recreated the world of Mozart and translated it for a contemporary audience through Motown lyrics. Or new collaborations with her husband, Jason Moran, a jazz pianist and the Kennedy Center artistic director of jazz. Or works with others, like a late September performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center called “Gershwin & Beyond” featuring guitarist Bill Frisell. Clap for Mami… She’s dope. Check out a performance from her below: Pretty amazing right? Facebook Continue reading →

As Steven Soderbergh said at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s preview screening of Side Effects on Wednesday, “There’s Movie A and there’s Movie B and there’s Movie C.” The director was making the apt point that Side Effect s could have been a heavy-handed movie about a) Big Pharma or b) insider trading, two of the film’s main motifs. But Soderbergh chose c), a much subtler and entertaining third path, and judging from the Manhattan audience’s enthusiastic reaction to the picture, his instincts did not fail him. Following the screening, Soderbergh took part in a Q&A session with cast members, Rooney Mara , Jude Law and Vinessa Shaw and Side Effects screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. When one moviegoer asked the director, “Did you ever feel like you might have missed an opportunity for a bigger conversation about Big Pharma?” Soderbergh responded: “I didn’t want to see that. What I loved about what Scott [Burns] did is that that issue was just a Trojan horse to hide a thriller inside of. I feel like, as a movie—that you stand in line and pay to see—I didn’t want to see a serious movie about Big Pharma. I really didn’t. I feel like I can read about that. It’s all over the news. It’s everywhere.” Alluding to his self-proclaimed retirement from filmmaking Soderbergh continued, “That may be a result of the fact that I’m in the twilight of my career. I honestly wanted to make something that…was connected to movies I saw when I was growing up that I thought were fun.” Burns chimed in to explain he generally starts “writing from a place where there’s something I’m upset or passionate about. So, obviously I have strong feelings about that whole issue.” But, he reasoned, “I don’t like movies that are preachy. If they are, they should be things like An Inconvenient Truth . We all wanted to make something really entertaining. The hope is that it causes a discussion about all these other issues. But we wanted to invite people to go on a ride.” Side Effects offers a lot of plot twists and turns along the way. Even Thomas Newman’s superb, eerie score elicits sensations that don’t necessarily align with the spare, elegant scenes unfolding on screen. “I feel like you should have a reason for every shot and you should have a reason for every cut,” Soderbergh told the crowd at the Walter Reade Theater before praising Burns’ script yet again. “What I loved about this piece of material is it’s an incredible opportunity to take it all down to the marrow,” he said, adding: “That doesn’t mean it has to be boring. It doesn’t mean that it can’t be stylish. It just means that, as a director, you’re supposed to have the 30,000-foot view of the movie and [to] be able to calibrate how the shots and the cutting patterns are going to affect the audience.” Soderbergh did not sound like filmmaker who was ready to fold up his director’s chair, and after demonstrating his nuanced choice of camera angles for a specific scene, Shaw, who plays Law’s wife in the film, addressed the elephant in the room. “And why are you quitting directing, based on everything you just said?” the actress said. [Insert passionate round of applause here.] “Because I don’t ever want to be in a situation where that’s the solve again,” Soderbergh said. “I can’t use that again. I used it. And that’s the last good idea I ever had.” Nell Alk is an arts and entertainment writer and reporter based in New York City.
